The FCC is expected to appoint more unlicensed airwaves for use by a new type of wireless network that is much faster than current Wi-Fi networks. According to a weekend New York Times report, the decision would likely do away with dead zones and expand wireless coverage even in urban areas, among other benefits. Such a network is being described as Wi-Fi on steroids, and would be capable of covering entire university or corporate campuses, says FCC chairman Julius Genachowski.
