Toshiba said today that it had successfully tested a new hard disk technology that packs in 2.5 terabits of data per square inch. This marks a four-fold increase in density over todayĆs hard disks. While Toshiba has yet to prove that it can read and write data using this next-generation approach to bit patterned media, news of the breakthrough is significant as it comes at a time when the rotating media industry has not settled on an industry roadmap for the next generation of hard disks.
