SSD market Did Not Rocket Up in 2009
According to IDC, the SSD market did not experience the expected growth in 2009, and figures how a slow increase in volume, + 14% with 11 millions units sold. IF 2009 was the year during which performance levels of SSD rocketed up, the tension on NAND Flash as well as the premium price of SSD units have pushed customers away making it more a luxurious product than one dedicated to mass market. We can expect that 2010 will be the year for "democratizing" SSD, especially if the ration price/performance strongly improves. Currently the market seems to evolve towards a 2 class segmentation: entry-level products around 100 Euro with limited storage space (around 40 GB), and products offering 128 GB and more, available at a premium price, around 3 Euro per GB. The price of will have to be divided at least by 3 for making SSD a mass product, affordable by most customers.
