The last study conducted by NPD and related to physical and online music sales indicates that Apple own 69% of the online market in USA, leaving Amazon on the second position with only 8%. When one considers both physical and online markets, Apple iTunes is the channel used for 25% of sales. This is huge and demonstrates that at least in USA online music store is quickly becoming a major distribution channel. It also shows that Music Majors did not succeed in breaking Apple iTunes success, and dropping DRM did not help other online stores to effectively compete with the huge number of iPod owners who will preferentially use iTunes for purchasing music tracks online.
