When you enable log-in for the guest account, Mac OS X sets it up just like a regular account in that it's given a home folder and user and group attributes for creating and managing files. As with any account, if these attributes are changed, you can damage the account and prevent it from logging on properly. Sometimes people have done this and have not known how to revert their changes.
