The company i4i holding a licence (in the form GPL) on the XML language succeeded in in an action against Microsoft. Microsoft had largely used XML in its software such as Word, but had also decided to modify it "to go further". However, in this case they should have informed the owner of the licence and even publicized the modifications that they refused to make.
The court recognized them guilty and condemned them to pay 200 million dollars of damages to i4i.
