Barefeats performed a rather unusual test comparing the Mac Pro 2008 and 2009 with a RAID 0 volume composed on SSD units (2, 3, 4 and 6 drives). They used the SLC chips-based X-25E SSD, offering high performance level with a associated high price tag. All drive are however only offering 32 GB of storage space.
From those data, one can conclude:
The Mac Pro 2008 seems to better manage software-based RAID 0 with a pick of 725 MB/s
The performance gain is not proportional to the number of drives composing the RAID volume. The best compromise is based on 3 or 4 SSDs. Indeed, one should keep in mind that if the RAID makes it possible to save bandwidth, it forces the system to split dat
