Samsung to Produce 30nm Engraved Flash Memory

While the market for flash memory is fighting to preserve its margin, R&D investments are important to release new and innovative products which will be sold at higher prices. Samsung just announced to have manufactured flash memory based on 30nm engraving process. By piling such memories, one will be able to generate 8GB chips in a reduced space. Samsung is already planning to offer memory cards featuring 16 of those chips for a storage space of 128GB. Beyond the market for memory card, it massively increases the theoretical capacity of SSD, and with the proper marketing and price campaigns one could speed up the adoption of such solid state storage space in notebooks. Samsung expects to start mass production of such chips in 2009. [translation by Linathael]
