Dutch court finds Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 doesn't infringe upon the iPad
The Dutch Supreme Court this week ruled that Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 doesn't infringe upon the design elements of Apple's iPad, thus throwing more water on Apple's efforts to get Samsung's tablet off of store shelves in the Netherlands.
ComputerWorld reports that while Apple's design patents for the iPad were held to be valid, the fact that a number of previous products implemented similar design elements limits the extent to which Apple can successfully persuade a court to issue an injunction.

Apple updates Certified Macintosh Technician program
Apple has updated its Apple Certified Macintosh Technician (ACMT) program for people aiming to service products under AppleCare warranties. Under the new terms, beginning on June 23rd, Apple says it should easier to both get and maintain certification. Technicians will no longer need to be recertified every year, and all exams will be available online, instead of forcing people to go to testing centers. When a test is done at a center, exam proctors will no longer be required.

DirecTV reportedly bidding $1 billion for Hulu
And then there were three. Bloomberg is reporting that a trio of companies are hoping to fork out over one billion dollars for the privilege of taking online video service Hulu under their wing, and DirecTV is one of them. Apple Ends OS X 10.8.4 Beta Testing Program, Suggesting Imminent Release [Mac Blog]
Apple may be planning to release the final version of OS X 10.8.4 in the near future, as it today sent out notices to AppleSeed members announcing the closure of the OS X 10.8.4 software update project. As noted by AppleInsider, participants received a notification stating that weekend infrastructure maintenance requires the company to close existing products. Origin Stories: Reflow
Reflow bills itself as "music notation for the rest of us" and I have to say the app packs a punch for musicians and students of music. Reflow's notation software has a lot of great drag-and-drop functionality for quickly building compositions, and takes away some drudgery from the process. Plus, it features iCloud sync so you can quickly take your Mac work on the go via iPad or iPhone/iPod touch.

Retailers run low on Mac Pro ahead of WWDC
The base, quad-core 3.2GHz Mac Pro is low on stock or unavailable at a number of vendors, MacTrast notes. The system is listed as backordered or out of stock by resellers like Adorama, CDW, B&H Photo, MacMall, PowerMax, and J&R Electronics. Amazon has less than 10 units in stock; Frys, Best Buy, and MicroCenter also have low quantities.

Apple Updates Service Tech Training and Certification Program [Mac Blog]
Apple has updated its Apple Certified Macintosh Technician (ACMT) Certification, making it easier for individuals to get their initial certifications and for existing techs to keep theirs without yearly recertification exams. The company is making its AppleCare technician certifications permanent as of June 23rd, making it so technicians will not need to go through a yearly recertification process. Additionally, exams of all kinds will be performed online rather than in a testing center. However, individual product qualifications -- certifications to repair more complicated products like the iMac -- will still need to be performed. Mac Pro inventory appears low as WWDC approaches
This year's WWDC is just around the corner, so we're all wondering what -- if any -- new products Apple might reveal at the event. If Apple's inventory at a number of different retailers is any hint, we might be looking at a new Mac Pro sometime in the near future. J. Glenn Künzler over at MacTrast did a little bit of sleuthing and checked the stocks of a dozen major Apple sellers, from Apple's website and retails stores to major websites like Amazon.
His search discovered a majority of the stores he examined were either out of stock of the 2012 Mac Pro or were running low on inventory.

Macworld discovers the most loved (and hated) features of OS X
With WWDC and revamps of iOS and OS X on the horizon, Macworld conducted an interesting survey, asking its readers what they liked and disliked most about Apple's desktop operating system. As Macworld admits, the survey isn't scientific and only polled five thousand responses, which is a drop in the bucket for OS X's user base. Still, the results are interesting.
OS X's Facebook and Twitter integration and Dictation were identified as the least-used features. 65 percent of respondents said they "never" use them. Best Buy to do $150 trade-in credit for iPhone 4/4S on Saturday
Best Buy is doing a one-day promotion on Saturday in which it will give $150 in trade-in credit for a working iPhone 4 or 4S, says CNET. The deal is meant to cover the cost of a new 16GB iPhone 5. Buyers must be eligible for an upgrade (or new contract) with AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint however, and pay any sales tax or carrier activation fees. Decompress with The Unarchiver
When I was asked to review The Unarchiver 2.7, a free decompression utility from Dag Ågren/WAHa, I thought "Who needs this program, when Mac OS X opens most common archive formats?" Sources add color to Apple Orlando design center claims
The former AMD people Apple has hired for its Orlando Design Center were actively targeted for recruitment, and primarily through their LinkedIn profiles, MacRumors sources say. Apple reportedly discovered that many of AMD's 3D graphics patents were issued from Orlando offices, and hence concentrated hiring efforts on the city. We've learned more details about Apple's new 'GPU Design Center' in Orlando, Florida, following our reporting from earlier this week. Sources told MacRumors that the engineers Apple hired recently were not laid off from AMD, but were instead actively recruited -- largely via their LinkedIn profiles. Internet Trends report highlights iPad's incredible success, room for smartphone growth and more
Earlier this week, Mary Meeker unveiled her Internet Trends report and, per usual, there's a lot of interesting information to digest. The deck is 117 slides deep, but the following slides in particular are worth highlighting.

Dutch court rules Samsung didn't infringe on iPad design
The Dutch Supreme Court has ruled that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 doesn't infringe on the design of the Apple iPad, according to reports. Although Apple does hold a European design patent, the Court has limited the applicability of the patent based on prior art. The iPad has predecessors, such as a Knight Ridder concept tablet dating back well over a decade before Apple's product was released. The iPad may have a "unique character," the court adds, but the Galaxy Tab is sufficiently different that an informed person can tell.

Just Mobile delivers AluPocket and AluDisc, two new high-design accessories
Erich Huang and the team at Just Mobile don't seem to be getting any rest these days. The company is well-known for its line of well built aluminum accessories for Apple products, and it was only about a month ago that TUAW reviewed the HeadStand headphone stand, AluCup dock for iPhone, and the AluFrame iPhone 5 bumper. Apple Rumored to Be Considering Launching an Ad Exchange
Apple is planning to launch an ad exchange, according to an anonymous advertising executive who spoke to Business Insider. The site says it heard from "one of the biggest players in online advertising", but could not confirm it -- BI said it talked to other sources who said they had heard nothing about it. An ad exchange is an online sales platform that allows advertisers to target users through a variety of mechanisms. An Apple exchange could theoretically target particular Apple users based on their location, type of device, buying habits, what apps they own and more. Apple holds a ton of data about the buying habits of its customers, making an Apple ad exchange a potential gold mine for advertisers.

Camino Browser for Mac Officially Discontinued [Mac Blog]
Longtime Mac users are likely to be familiar with Camino, a Mac-specific browser based on Mozilla's Gecko engine, the same engine used in Netscape 6/7, Firefox, and other browsers. Musyc from FingerLab isn't your standard music-making app. There's no fretboard, no keyboard, or synthesizer interface. There is just a bunch of lines and shapes. I was doubtful when I first downloaded the app, but I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Musyc is a blast.
Musyc allows you to draw lines on a canvas, select shapes that make sounds and start making music. You drop the shapes on the line and they bounce to create a rhythmic sound. Camino web browser reaches its end of life
The developers of the venerable Camino web browser announced yesterday that the product is no longer being developed and that users should move on to "a more modern browser."
As the team blog notes, "Fortunately, Mac users have many more browsers to choose from than they did when Camino started ten years ago." Camino devs have gone on to create Safari, Chrome and Firefox, all of which are under active development and in use by millions.

One of the key features of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, launched in April 2005, was the addition of Dashboard Widgets, miniature apps with specific functions that could exist side by side on a dedicated screen accessible at the touch of a key. The feature spawned a market for third-party widgets, leading Apple to launch a dedicated page where it has hosted widgets for download and provided an easily browsable directory for users. Widgets have, however, fallen out of fashion with Mac users, and the Dashboard itself has been reduced in prominence as Apple has emphasized other quick-access features like Mission Control and Launchpad. Apple stopped accepting new submissions to its Dashboard Widgets site in early 2011, but the directory of roughly 4,000 widgets has remained available to users.

Apple hikes iPad, iPod prices in Japan
Apple has raised prices for all iPad and iPod models in Japan, Bloomberg reports. "We made some pricing adjustments due to changes in foreign exchange rates," says local company spokesman Takashi Takabayashi. Nuance a "fundamental provider" to Siri
Rumors have long suggested Apple is working with Nuance on the voice recognition technology that powers Siri, but neither company has confirmed this partnership until now. A Brief First Look at Apple's New 16 GB iPod Touch
Following yesterday's introduction of a new entry-level fifth-generation iPod touch with 16 GB of storage and lacking a rear camera, Apple's retail stores began carrying the device today. Australian Ben Pasternak was one of the first to purchase the new iPod touch, and he has posted a brief video overview of it. While the body design is nearly identical to the existing fifth-generation iPod touch, merely lacking the rear camera and support for Apple's Loop wrist strap, the video provides a good look at the unique color scheme for the new model, which carries a black front and silver back.

Apple raises iPad, iPod prices in Japan
Apple has raised iPad and iPod prices in Japan, placing the blame on the weak yen. As reported by Japan's NHK, the iPad and iPod are the only devices that have received the quiet price jump.
AppleInsider compared cached versions of the Apple's Japanese online store and found the 16 GB iPad selling for 49,800 yen, vs. 42,800 yen from last April. As of this writing, that reflects a change of approximately $70 difference. Similarly, the iPad mini is selling for 32,800 yen vs. 28,800 yen last April.
Apple spokesman Takashi Takabayashi told Bloomberg, "We made some pricing adjustments due to changes in foreign exchange rates."

Käufer, welche mit dem Kauf eines iPhones nicht zuwarten wollen, bis sie das Geld gespart haben, können auf eine zinslose Ratenzahlung zurückgreifen. Dabei wird ein Teil des Kaufpreises beim Erwerb des Gerätes bezahlt, während der Rest des Betrages über die nächsten 12 Monate abbezahlt werden muss. Google baut in Zürich aus
Gestern hat Google den neuen Standort auf dem Zürcher «Hürlimann-Areal» offiziell eingeweiht. Dank den 300 neu geschaffenen Arbeitsplätzen beschäftigt Google nun bereits 1’100 Angestellte in Zürich und gehört somit zu den 50 grössten Arbeitgebern der Stadt. Zürich ist für Google der grösste Entwicklungsstandort ausserhalb der USA. In der Schweiz werden zentrale Dienste von Google (wie Gmail, Maps und die Suche) weiterentwickelt sowie auch neue Dienste entwickelt. Beispielsweise wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit den SBB die Routensuche für den öffentlichen Verkehr in Google Maps implementiert.
Wie bei anderen Standorten legte Google auch im neuen Gebäude viel Wert auf die Gestaltung der Räume. Neben speziellen Lokal-Zimmern verfügt das Gebäude auch über einen Raum für Weindegustationen oder über eine Küche.

Bestätigt: Hinter Apples Siri steckt Nuances Sprach-Technologie
Nuances CEO Paul Ricci bestätigte anlässlich der D11-Konferenz in San Francisco die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Nuance und Apple am Sprachassistenten Siri. Die Technologie von Nuance ist ein wichtiger Bestandteil für die Spracherkennung von Siri, wie Ricci im Interview darlegte. Gemäss eigenen Angaben besteht die Technologie in Siri aus cloudbasierten und lokalen Bestandteilen. Als Gesamtsystem funktioniert Siri deshalb (bekanntlich) nur, wenn eine Internetverbindung besteht. Nichts zu tun haben die Technologien von Nuance mit der «künstlichen Intelligenz» von Siri.
Die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Nuance und den Entwicklern von Siri bestand bereits vor der Übernahme von Siri durch Apple.

IK Multimedia unveils AmpliTube 3 software, iRig HD hardware
IK Multimedia launched a one-two punch on Thursday with the release of two major new products: the iOS version of its audio editor AmpliTube -- now at version 3.0 -- and a new version of its hardware pre-amp adapter for quarter-inch connected instruments such as most electric guitars, the iRig HD. The latter sells for $100 and allows performers to record all manner of traditional instruments. The $20 iOS AmpliTube now offers a multi-track Studio mode with new gear models and timeline-based audio editing, along with effects and a built-in drum machine.

Daily iPad App: Bam Fu is frenzied fun for multiple players on one device
A while ago, I wrote about an ingenious little app named Bloop, which was a multiplayer game for one iPad, where up to four different players had to tap on little colored squares on the screen to see who could clear them off fastest. The creator of that app, Rusty Moyher, was later approached by another team of developers named Game Oven, who were then working on this app, called Bam Fu. Bam Fu is similar to Bloop, in that it too is a multiplayer game for one iOS device, and you need to hit certain colored shapes on the screen.
But Bam Fu's one big innovation is that it adds a little more complexity to the game. Instead of just clearing

Apple Raises iPad and iPod Prices in Japan
Apple has raised the prices for the iPad, the iPad mini, and the iPod touch in its Japanese online store, Business Insider editor Joseph Weisenthal noted on Twitter. Over the past several months, the Japanese yen has weakened in value, hitting ¥100.69 against the dollar earlier today, which is said to be the reason why Apple has increased its prices. Previously, the entry level fourth generation iPad and iPad mini were priced at ¥42,800 and ¥28,800, respectively. As of today, the prices for the base products are ¥49,800 and ¥32,800. The increase is equivalent to approximately $40 for the iPad mini and $70 for the iPad, raising the price of the iPad mini to $324 and the price of the iPad to $492.87.

Report: 99.9 percent of mobile threats on Android
Mobile platforms are under increasing attack, according to security researcher Kaspersky Lab. A recently released report indicates that not only has the pacing of attacks quadrupled, but 99.9 percent of new mobile malware discovered in the first quarter of 2013 is Android-specific. The most common attacks are trojan viruses, with 63 percent of all infections.

Apple updates Camera Raw to 4.06, adds support for 13 new cameras
On Thursday, Apple updated its Digital Camera RAW Compatibility file to version 4.06, adding support for 13 new cameras. The update is only for users of Aperture 3.x or iPhoto '11 (any version) running either 10.7.5 (OS X Lion) or 10.8.2 (OS X Mountain Lion) or higher. The update adds three Canon EOS models, four Nikon models, the Hasselblad Lunar and the Sony Alpha NEX-3N. The update is automatically available through Software Update, and can also be downloaded direction from Apple's Support Downloads page.

Apple goes after app news release for being 'at odds' with 'entire reason Apple exists'
Apple took a dislike recently to a press release announcing the availability of a new app. After Tim Cook passed this week on a question about sharing solutions across iCloud, the CEO of a company making an app named Glide, Donald Leka, sent out a press release for his app stating that "consumers really don't care that much what platform they are on, where their files are stored, or what the file types and file formats are."
That apparently earned Leka the ire of Apple Worldwide Developer Relations, who sent him a memo suggesting he see things as a bit more Apple-centric. Customers do care about what platform they're on, said

Apple-sanctioned Colby Walkmac from 1987 unearthed
Mobile software developer and former Apple employee Ken Landau was engaged in a bit of spring cleaning when he uncovered a rare find: a still-functional, Apple-sanctioned portable version of the Mac SE created and built by electronics pioneer Chuck Colby in 1987, two years before Apple would begin its own journey into mobile computing with the Macintosh Portable. The Colby Walkmac (as it was known) was the first battery-operated Macintosh, as well as the first portable Mac with an LCD display. At the time, the 13-pound Walkmac sold for around $6,000.

Threadflip redesigns, seeing 20% of purchases made through mobile app
Threadflip is an app where users can buy, sell, and discover various clothing and other fashion items, and it's just undergone a major redesign. The app was introduced about a year ago, and since then, Threadflip has seen about 20 percent of purchases made and 40 percent of items listed come directly from the mobile app, so it's a fairly big market for them. That follows the trends that we've seen with mobile shopping lately, with more and more people using their iPhones and iPads to shop, either buying items directly on the touchscreen, or using the mobile devices while out in a more traditional retail environment.

Retro rarity: spring cleaning unearths a Colby Walkmac
For those of us who have been around the mobile computing space for a while, the name Ken Landau is quite familiar. Ken's currently the CEO of iOS development firm mobileAge, but he's been producing software for handheld computing devices since the true birth of the industry in 1993 with the introduction of the Apple Newton MessagePad. Recently, Ken was doing a bit of spring cleaning and found a rarity in his basement: a Colby Walkmac.

Group calls for removal of 'gay cure' app from iOS, Android stores
A gay rights advocacy group known as All Out has called on both Apple and Google to remove a "gay cure" app from their respective app stores. Apple has already removed the app, but as of this writing the program, Setting Captives Free is still available on Google's Play store. Though the program purports to offer solutions to a number of spiritual and medical issues, its main purpose is promoting a 60-day plan that claims to cure gays and lesbians of their sexual orientation. All Out launched a petition drive yesterday to urge stores to remove the app.
