Pegatron to Assemble Low Cost iPhone as Apple Works to Balance Supply Chain
Apple is continuing to seek improved supply-chain risk management by shifting more of its manufacturing needs from its longtime partner Foxconn to Pegatron, notes The Wall Street Journal in a new report that suggests Pegatron will be responsible for the assembly of Apple's low cost iPhone.Pegatron Corp., named after the flying horse Pegasus, will be the primary assembler of a low-cost iPhone expected to be offered later this year. Foxconn's smaller rival across town became a minor producer of iPhones in 2011 and began making iPad Mini tablet computers last year. I don't know about you, but after watching/listening/suffering through all 81 minutes of Tim Cook's AllThingsD D11 talk with hosts Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg, I feel like I have a hangover. Gmail getting an updated interface on desktop and mobile
The Gmail Blog reports that the popular online email service is getting yet another facelift, on both the desktop and mobile clients. As you can see above, the new look's emphasis is on Facebook-style tabs, with all of your interactions boiled down into your Primary inbox, or Google's Social, Promotions, and Updates features. Alcatel's One Touch Idol now available in the US for $300 unlocked
Alcatel announced today that its One Touch Idol smartphone is now available for the US market, but without a carrier. Weighing in at only 110 grams, the supposed "world's lightest" handset will be sold unlocked for $300 via the company's website. Meant as an entry-level device, the specs betray its low-end status: you get a 4.7-inch qHD (960 x 540) IPS display, 512MB RAM, 4GB internal storage, an 8-megapixel camera and a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU with Android 4.1 in tow. News: Report: Pegatron to be primary assembler of budget iPhone
Apple will use Pegatron — not Foxconn — as its primary assembler for the company’s new low-cost iPhone “expected to be offered later this year,” according to a new report. Google Play app revenue up, but still a distant second to Apple App Store
A new report from Distimo, a company that provides mobile app store analytics for developers, shows that revenue for the Android based Google Play store is up. In November of 2012, revenue from Google Play made up only 19 percent of combined total revenue between the Apple App Store and Google Play. However by this past April 2013 Google Play's share had increased by eight percentage points, now making up 27 percent of the combined total revenue of the two stores. Apple is still leading the market with 73 percent of the combined total revenue.

Researchers build machine that identifies music after hearing only three notes
Can you identify Beethoven's Sonata No. 9 after hearing a mere three notes? Probably not, but a group of computer scientists and music scholars have built a machine that can do just that. The team -- composed of Pablo Rodriguez Zivic, Favio Shifres and Guillermo Cecchi -- has developed an algorithm capable of identifying patterns across distinct periods of Western music based on semi-tones and notes. Google reveals updated Gmail interface for web, iOS, Android
Google is slowly rolling out an updated Gmail interface to the web and its mobile apps, according to an official blog post. The interface divides a person's inbox into five customizable categories; Primary, for instance, gathers together high-priority emails, while Social can be used to handle messages from social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and Google+. Messages can be dragged-and-dropped between tabs, and people can choose to use any combination of categories or none at all.

Tim Cook explains why Apple only makes one iPhone [Video]
During yesterday's All Things D kickoff interview, Walt Mossberg asked Tim Cook why Apple hasn't yet released different iPhone models for a range of demographics and regions. If a varied product lineup worked so successfully for the iPod, Mossberg wondered, why not implement a similar strategy for the iPhone.
In short, amidst a sea of increasingly popular Android handsets with large screens, Mossberg wanted to know why Apple has continued to stick with a one-size-fits-all iPhone strategy.
Cook first responded that while Apple hasn't yet released an iPhone with a bigger screen, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they won't in the future.

Apple's Movie Trailers app adds Fandango ticket purchasing
Apple has released a new update for its Movie Trailers app. The update brings a number of features that are sure to please movie fans. Users are now able to purchase movie tickets in the app, with purchases routed through Fandango. Apple enabled ticket purchasing through Siri and Fandango earlier this year, so this is a welcome addition.
Playback on the app has also been improved. Now when selecting a trailer you can choose between SD and HD video playback. For viewers who switch between their data plan and Wifi networks regularly when using their phones for streaming, this is a nice feature. Sometimes you want to watch a trailer but the connection just isn't there for full HD. In addition the speed in which a video begins playing has been improved, along with the standard "additional improvements" that come with every app update. You ca

Sony's Yoshida confirms all PlayStation 4 games work with Vita via Remote Play (with minor exceptions)
Sony's PlayStation Vita is getting a major content boost when the PlayStation 4 launches later this year, as all PlayStation 4 games will run on the Vita via Remote Play. The only exceptions offered by Sony Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida were, "unless the game requires specific hardware like the camera [PS4 Eye]." It also stands to reason that PlayStation Move-specific titles won't run via Remote Play, nor anything else that requires peripheral hardware (the Buzz! series, for example).

ITC to re-examine split ruling in Apple v. Samsung dispute
The US International Trade Commission will review a split decision made by a judge in a patent dispute between Apple and Samsung, Reuters reports. In March the judge ruled that while Samsung had infringed an Apple patent on text selection, it hadn't infringed on one for detecting accessories plugged into a microphone jack. Final rulings on both patents due to be handed down August 1st.

Following Tim Cook's appearance at D11 last night, respected Apple journalist Jim Dalrymple has posted his expectations for Apple's WWDC Keynote next month. It's not clear if Dalrymple, who is known to have excellent contacts at Apple, is passing on something in particular from the company or it's just a summary of what he expects ahead of WWDC. Dalrymple writes that he doesn't expect a new iPhone or iPad model, largely because the devices are flagship products and would have their own, separate media events. Apple to pay $53 million in iPhone water damage settlement
Bloomberg is reporting that Apple will pay US$53 million to settle a class-action lawsuit that alleges the company unfairly denied warranty coverage to iPhone and iPod owners because of faulty water damage indicator tapes in the devices.
Like many companies, Apple uses water damage indicator tape inside its devices so it can tell if the device has been submerged in water. The tape, made by 3M, changes color when it comes into contact with liquid. However, the plaintiffs in the case successfully argued that the tape Apple used could change color while exposed to humidity or moisture in the air.

The company announced today that it'll be bringing a new tabbed layout to the desktop and mobile versions of Gmail, safely filing messages where they belong. Google+ for iOS updated with Auto Enhance, Google Offers, more
Google has released an update to its Google+ app that sees a number of new features. Most significantly, the update offers a number of automatic photo editing tools. Now users can simply tap an Auto Enhance button to automatically touch up their photos in the app. Another button called Auto Highlight allows the app to select the best photo out of a series of photos. The featured called Auto Awesome takes multiple photos and combines them into one, while Auto Backup allows you to automatically upload any photos you've taken to Google+.

Tim Cook says Apple has already acquired nine companies in 2013
During his appearance at All Things D last night, Tim Cook mentioned that Apple in 2013 is acquiring companies at a faster clip than in years past. In previous years, Cook noted, Apple acquired an average of six companies per year. Not even six months into 2013, Cook explained Apple has already acquired nine companies.
Of course, Cook stressed that Apple isn't going to announce all of its acquisitions, but rather just the ones it has to. This certainly makes sense given Apple's penchant for surgical acquisitions. IDC: 2013 mehr verkaufte Tablets als Notebooks
Die Statistiker von IDC haben neue Vorhersagen zur Entwicklung des globalen Tablet-Marktes publiziert. Gemäss diesen Vorhersagen wird der globale Tablet-Markt in diesem Jahr um 58.7 Prozent wachsen, was fast 230 Millionen verkauften Tablets entsprechen würde. Im Jahr 2012 wurden noch 144.5 Millionen Tablets abgesetzt. Den Schätzungen von IDC zufolge werden bereits im Jahr 2015 mehr Tablets verkauft als klassische Computer und Notebooks. Für das Jahr 2013 geht IDC von PC-Verkäufen im Umfang von 322 Millionen Einheiten aus.
Bereits in diesem Jahr sollen die Tablet-Verkäufe den Notebook-Absatz übertreffen. Für IDC-Manager Ryan Reith zeigt diese Entwicklung die veränderten Kundenbedürfnisse besonders deutlich. When Realmac Software created Clear a little over a year ago, the big attraction was the ability to perform most to-do list tasks with a single swipe or two. Apple hires former EPA head to handle environmental issues
Among many other topics mentioned during CEO Tim Cook's talk at D11 today, one bit of genuine previously-unannounced news came out: Apple has hired the former head of the EPA, Lisa Jackson, to head up its environmental responsibility efforts. Tim Cook: Apple has no issue porting its apps to Android
While it may seem far-fetched that Apple would consider following BlackBerry Messenger's footsteps and bring some apps to Android, it turns out that such a move isn't out of the question. "We have no religious issue with porting an Apple app to Android," said Cook. "If it made sense for us to do that, we would do that. You could apply that to every area of Apple." That's far from a guarantee that we'll see apps coded by Cupertino turn up on Google's mobile OS, but it certainly introduces a possibility that would seem uncharacteristic of the company.

Big updates coming for Skylanders, Real Racing 3
We've got news of two major updates coming to high profile iOS games recently. First up, Activision's Skylanders: Lost Islands (the iOS town-building title based on the very popular toy/game series) just got a new substantial update, featuring Facebook integration, and lots of new companions to place in your town. Tim Cook thinks Google Glass lacks broad appeal, but wearables are 'incredibly interesting'
Today on stage at the D11 conference, Tim Cook indicated that Apple's interested in wearable tech, even though he thinks it's "tough to see it having a broad-range appeal." When asked about the current state of wearables, he mentioned that fitness devices like the Nike Fuelband (he owns one) will need to be able to do more than one thing to really catch on with the public. Generally, he sees it as "an area that's ripe for exploration" and that "there will be tons of companies involved" in making wearable devices. Apple updates printer drivers for Fuji Xerox models
On Tuesday, Apple updated its printer drivers for a number of Fuji Xerox models of printers, scanners and AIO units. The new update package, dubbed v2.4, is 40.25MB for the "combo version," but users updating through Software Update will only see the update if they have an affected model, and will only get the drivers for the relevant units that are registered with the Mac or on the local area network.

Productivity Tip: Synchronizing tasks for the individual
This week's Productivity Tip As a kid I used little Day Timer notebooks to keep track of my schedules and projects. Of course my duties in high school were minimal compared to today, but those pocket-able sprial-bound notepads were great for capturing and tracking all my "stuff." In film school I met a videographer who kept track of his schedule using a PalmPilot. I loved how, for years, my PalmPilot kept perfect sync with my Mac -- provided I put it in the cradle every day and hit the Sync button. Today, we don't have that sync button.
