Tim Cook on the state of IP protection: Our product cycles move much quicker than the court system
During Apple's April 2012 earnings conference call, Tim Cook emphatically stated that he hates litigation.
"I've always hated litigation," Cook explained. "I continue to hate it. I just want people to invent their own stuff."
That notwithstanding, Apple today finds itself embroiled in a myriad of patent infringement lawsuits. With Samsung in particular, Apple has ongoing legal battles with its Korean-based competitor in 11 countries across 4 continents.

Precedent-setting SEP enforcement injunction awarded in Wi-Fi dispute
A ruling yesterday in the Northern District of California may have repercussions on the smartphone patent battles raging across the US court landscape. A federal judge granted a user of a standards-essential patent a preliminary injunction against enforcement of a possible US International Trade Commission (ITC) sales injunction. This decision by Senior District Judge Ronald Whyte is the first time a US district court is preventing the ITC's only option to combat patent infringers in conjunction with standards-essential patents.

Xbox One has non-replaceable hard drive, external storage is supported
We had the opportunity to chat with Albert Penello, senior director of product planning at Microsoft this afternoon, who was kind enough to clarify a few topics for us regarding the recently-unveiled Xbox One. Cook pushes for US IP law changes during Senate testimony
In a brief sidetrack during his Senate testimony today, Apple CEO Tim Cook voiced his opinion on US intellectual property law. Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) asked Cook about the IP benefits of running a company in the US versus other countries, but appears to have been surprised when Cook took a critical tone. Cook: US-made Mac will be assembled in Texas
During his testimony before the Senate on Apple's tax strategies, CEO Tim Cook restated an earlier promise that a forthcoming Mac model -- not identified -- was going to be built in the United States, and further revealed that it would be assembled in Texas. While the exact site wasn't specified, Apple has established and is expanding an administrative campus in Austin, and manufacturing partner Foxconn has facilities in Houston.

Xbox One installs discs to the HDD, friends list capped at 1,000
The Xbox One's 50GB Blu-ray discs will automatically rip to your 500GB harddrive, Microsoft tells us, and it looks like you won't have to wait 'til they're done to get going. That's according to the Xbox One landing page on Xbox.com, spotted by our friends at Joystiq, which says, "With Xbox One, you can start playing immediately as games install. And updates install seamlessly in the background, so your games and entertainment won't be interrupted."

Nokia adds sight recognition to HERE Maps for Windows Phone 8
Six months after promising to integrate sight recognition technology into its HERE suite of apps, Nokia has finally updated HERE Maps with LiveSight. Committee attacks Apple for tax loopholes, admits rate issue
During Tim Cook's appearance on Tuesday before the US Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations (which is presently looking into the tax code), Chairman Carl Levin (D-Michigan) accused Apple of "exploiting an absurdity [in US tax laws] that we have not seen other corporations use," referring to a loophole he believes should be closed. Cook maintained that Apple pays US taxes on its US profits as it should.

Ireland distances itself from Apple's tax inquiry
Ireland has responded to criticism from Senater Carl Levin (D-Mich.) that Irish tax laws allowed Apple to avoid playing taxes on tens of billions of dollars in profits using Irish subsidiaries. So what did Ireland have to say for itself?

Samsung's 13.3-inch 3,200 x 1,800 LCD ships in Q3, we go eyes-on at SID (video)
So, it's not the full laptop setup we were kinda-sorta expecting based on Samsung's announcement yesterday, but the Korean company's 13.3-inch 3,200 x 1,800 panel -- with a whopping 275 ppi -- is still plenty impressive on its own. Xbox One isn't backwards compatible with Xbox 360 discs or Xbox Live Arcade, Gamerscore transfers
It's true: the Xbox One will not play your Xbox 360 game discs, nor will your Xbox Live Arcade games transfer (not to mention any other content that's dependent on the 360's hardware architecture, anyhow). That Gamerscore you've been earning, though? That's gonna transfer.
Sadly, due to the x86 architecture of the Xbox One, the PowerPC-based 360 titles simply won't run on the hardware. Tim Cook: US-made Macs will be assembled in Texas
Tim Cook on Tuesday morning appeared before Congress to talk about Apple's tax practices, with a specific focus on Apple's foreign stash of cash. As it stands now, the bulk of Apple's revenue is derived from overseas sales. Consequently, Apple has chosen to keep that cash abroad where it's subject to much lower tax rates than the corporate income tax rate of 35% it would be subject to if it brought that cash back.
During his opening remarks, Cook highlighted all Apple has done for the U.S. economy, emphasizing how much the company already pays in domestic taxes and how it's been responsible for the creation of hundreds of thousands of new jobs in the U.S.

Neue Xbox, neues Gamepad: der drahtlose Controller der Xbox One
Zur neuen Xbox One gibt es ein frisches Gamepad: Auf den ersten Blick sieht der neue drahtlose Xbox-Controller dem alten der Xbox 360 ziemlich ähnlich, allerdings hat es ein paar leichte Änderungen im Design gegeben. Zum Beispiel ist der Xbox-Button ein wenig nach oben gerutscht um ein paar anderen Platz zu machen, die jetzt an seiner Stelle sind. Vielleicht die größte Änderung: die Trigger haben jetzt ein eingebautes Forece Feedback-System, das Microsoft "Impulse Triggers" nennt. Auch das D-Pad wurde neu gestaltet und das Batteriefach ist wesentlich kleiner als das der alten Controller.

Microsoft debuted the Xbox One this afternoon live from a tent on its Redmond, WA. campus, putting to end months of speculation about the company's next-generation video game console. Xbox One's "Snap Mode" lets you use two apps simultaneously
Phones, tablets and game consoles typically offer single screen experiences, that is, one app on screen at a time. Microsoft is challenging that idea, announcing what it calls "Snap Mode" at its next generation Xbox event, taking a stab at home console multitasking. It's essentially a port of a well known Windows 8 feature: separate apps can be pinned to the edge of the television's screen in isolated panels, allowing gamers to use Xbox apps while playing a game, or watch TV while simultaneously using Internet Explorer .

The Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai is often referred to as "the world's only 7-Star hotel." And now you can see why. The hotel has announced that it will be giving 24-carat gold-plated iPads to guests at check-in. The iPad will act as a "virtual concierge" for the hotel's guests, with information like maps, housekeeping services, spa services, and more.
Guests will be required to give the iPads back when they check out, unless they choose to purchase it (there's no word on the cost). The gold-plated iPad isn't the only Apple product that the Burj Al Arab's guests can enjoy: each of its 202 rooms has an iMac as well.

Apple Still Tops in Cellphone Customer Satisfaction, but Losing Ground to Samsung and Others
The American Customer Satisfaction Index (ASCI) has today released its annual rankings of customer satisfaction for mobile phones in the United States. While Apple had the highest customer satisfaction index score for the second year in a row, its score has fallen slightly while competitors like Motorola Mobility, Nokia, and Samsung have all gained in score. Apple is still at the top of the list when it comes to smartphone satisfaction, but this year's ranking of 81 (out of 100) is two percent below its 2012 ranking of 83. Chinese activists complain of Apple Store light pollution
Environmental activist group, Friends of the Earth HK, claims Apple's Causeway flagship store in Hong Kong is a major contributor to light pollution in the area. Apple reportedly runs about 500 lamps and spotlights over night, and the light spills outside of the store into the Hong Kong streets. According to a report in M.I.C. Gadget, Friends of the Earth HK says light from the store can be seen as far as 700 meters away.

Unity drops licensing fee on game engine for mobile developers
Indie developers have been able to take advantage of a free version of the Unity engine for desktop game development some time now, and starting today they can extend that development to mobile games at no added cost. The company's confirmed that it's dropping the $800 licensing fee for its Android and iOS build options, with Blackberry 10 and Windows Phone 8 development also promised to be moving to a free option in the "coming months."

AT&T waiving overage charges for Oklahoma customers affected by tornadoes
This morning, AT&T sent out a message to Oklahoma customers affected by yesterday's tornado devastation noting that those in the affected areas will have all voice, data and text overages waived through June 30.
The company also reminded AT&T Wireless customers across the country that they can support disaster relief efforts by texting the word REDCROSS to 90999. That text message sends a donation of $10 to the American Red Cross and is charged on the customer's monthly bill.
Bryan Gonterman, State President for AT&T Oklahoma, said in a statement that "Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by the tornado that hit the Oklahoma City area Monday.

NPD: pre-paid smartphones rising, now one-third of US sales
Sales of prepaid smartphones in the US consumer market have risen dramatically, doubling in the last year and "continuing a string of more than 12 quarters of triple-digit sales increases" according to a new report from market analysts NPD. Prepaid phones -- defined as either premium smartphones such as the iPhone bought outright to avoid a contract or low-end smartphones aimed at lower-income consumers -- increased 11 percent in year-over-year in the first quarter of 2013.

Yahoo! kauft Tumblr für 1.1 Milliarden US-Dollar
Am Montag bestätigte Yahoo das seit dem Wochenende kursierende Gerücht, dass der Konzern den Blog-Dienst «Tumblr» für 1.1 Milliarden US-Dollar übernehmen wird. Yahoo bezahlt den Kaufpreis ohne eigene Aktien komplett in bar, wie das Unternehmen weiter bekannt gab. Damit handelt es sich um die grösste Übernahme von Yahoo, seitdem die frühere Google-Managerin Marissa Mayer als CEO im Amt ist.
Yahoo verspricht, den Dienst unabhängig als eigenständiges Geschäftsfeld betreiben zu wollen und lässt den bisherigen CEO David Karp auf seinem Posten. Damit zeigt Yahoo auch gegen aussen, dass man beim Unternehmen Tumblr auf Kontinuität setzt und dem Unternehmen nicht den Yahoo-Chic aufzwingen will.
Mit dem Kauf könnte Yahoo vor allem das eigene Image verjüngen und Zugang zu einer völlig neuen Nutzergruppe erhalten. Ein Blog-Dienst wie Tumblr fehlte bislang noch im Portfolio von Yahoo.

Poser 10 and Poser Pro 2014 available, bringing new characters, physics and more
Poser has come a long way from the last time I used it, right around version 4. We're now at 10 for the basic edition (retail US$299.99) and Poser Pro 2014 (retail $499.99) has become a powerful animation tool in its own right. I got to look at some of the new features rolling out today and they are impressive, putting Poser on par with many animation and modeling suites costing much more.
A problem with any humanoid character is how the "skin" folds when you bend it. Poser now offers Pixar's OpenSubdiv libraries, which means subdivision surfaces anywhere you need them. I was impressed with the accuracy and speed at which Poser created subdivisions, which add greatly to the realism already available in Poser. There are also some new characters

Tim Cook muss heute vor US-Senatsausschuss aussagen
Die Steueroptimierungen der internationalen Unternehmen haben in den letzten Wochen und Monaten immer wieder für Aufregung gesorgt. Während einige Staaten sich in Folge der Finanzkrise stark verschuldet haben respektive auch ohne die Krise bereits über eine hohe Schuldenlast verfügten, sparen grosse internationale Unternehmen mit ihren vielen Tochtergesellschaften Steuern. Alleine Apple verfügt über 100 Milliarden US-Dollar, welche nicht in den USA gelagert werden. Würde das Geld aktuell in die USA zurücktransferiert, wären Steuern in der Höhe von 35 Prozent fällig.
Tim Cook wurde nun von einem US-Senatsausschuss vorgeladen, um heute zu den Steueroptimierungen von Apple Stellung zu nehmen. Vor Tim Cook haben bereits Vertreter von HP und Microsoft zur gleichen Thematik ausgesagt.

Gerücht: Apple testet 1.5-Zoll-OLED-Display für intelligente Uhr
Taiwanesischen Medienberichten zufolge arbeitet Apple unter Hochdruck an der Entwicklung einer intelligenten Uhr. Beim Hersteller RITEK soll man demnach mit der Probeproduktion der Displays der intelligenten Uhr begonnen haben. Beim Display soll es sich um ein 1.5-Zoll-OLED-Display handeln.
OLED-Displays sind dünner als LCD-Bildschirme und benötigen weniger Energie. Damit würde sich diese Technologie bestens für eine intelligente Uhr eignen. Momentan ist die Lebensdauer dieser organischen Leuchtdioden noch geringer als diejenige herkömmlicher Bildschirme. Dieser Umstand würde sich bei einem Dauerbetrieb der Uhr negativ auswirken.

Tipp: Musik aus dem Sperrbildschirm aus bedienen
Auf einem gesperrten iOS-Gerät wird durch doppeltes Drücken des Home-Buttons die Musik-Schaltflächen angezeigt. Durch diese Schaltflächen kann die Musik-Wiedergabe eingeschalten, bereits gespielte Musik pausiert, die Lautstärke visuell verändert und zum nächsten oder vorhergehenden Titel gewechselt werden.
Auf dem iPad gibt es ausserdem noch die Möglichkeit den Shuffle-Modus und die Wiederholung ein- bzw. auszuschalten und über den Fortschritbalken direkt an einen gewissen Punkt im Titel zu springen.

Tipp: Zuletzt geöffnete Ordner anzeigen lassen
Im Finder kann durch «Anklicken und Halten» auf die Zurück-Schaltflächen eine Liste der zuletzt in diesem Fenster betrachteten Ordner angezeigt werden. Über diese Anzeige kann auch schnell in eben diese vorhergehend geöffneten Ordner gesprungen werden.
Selbiges funktioniert mit der Vor-Schaltfläche auch in die andere Richung, wenn man über die Zurück-Schaltfläche davor in einen früher bereits geöffneten Ordner zurück springt.
Diese eben genannten Listen sind wie erwähnt «Fenster bezogen» und zeigen deshalb nur den Verlauf aller im jeweiligen Fenster geöffneten Fenster an. Ein globaler Verlauf aller zuletzt geöffneter Ordner kann über das Finder-Menü Gehe zuBenutzte Ordner aufgerufen werden. Hier gibt es jeweils einen Direktzugang zu den 10 zuletzt geöffenten Ordnern — auch nach einem System-Neustart.

iPad 5: Massenproduktion soll im Juli beginnen – Veröffentlichung im September?
In der ersten Jahreshälfte werden offenbar keine neuen iPads oder iPhones mehr erscheinen. Dafür soll sich Apple jetzt für einen Start des iPad 5 vorbereiten: Die Testproduktion werde bald, die Massenproduktion im Juli beginnen.
Digitimes will Informationen von Apple-Zulieferern aus Taiwan zum iPad 5 erhalten haben. Apples Partner würden im Juli mit der Massenproduktion beginnen, im September werde die Produktion schnell genug laufen, um in diesem Monat zwei bis drei Millionen Exemplare herstellen zu lassen. Yahoo: Flickr mit kostenlosem 1 TByte für Fotos

Samsung's Wallet app launches in Korea
Samsung showed off its Wallet app to developers earlier this year, and now Korean customers can download it onto compatible Android devices from the company's own app market. New Adelaide Apple Store to open on May 25th
Apple is preparing to open a new Apple Store in Adelaide, Australia on May 25th at 10AM. The Rundle Place outlet will not only be Apple's first in Adelaide, but also by extension the first in the state of South Australia, which is otherwise sparsely populated. The company has 19 other stores in the country, most of which are in New South Wales or Victoria.

Vudu Player for iOS Gets Updated With Ability to Download Movies [iOS Blog]
VUDU, the third most popular internet video-on-demand provider behind Apple's iTunes and Amazon's Instant Video, today updated its app with a feature that allows users to download movies for offline viewing, a redesigned video player, and more. Previously, VUDU users using the VUDU Player app had to stream their content from within the app and could not view their movies and TV shows offline. With the new update, users can download their content at various qualities for use when an internet connection isn't available. Other changes include a redesigned video player that's easier to use, Closed Captioning support for iPhone and general bug fixes throughout the app.

Free VIEW Magazine is filled with intriguing photography
View Magazine is a nicely put-together coffee table ebook for the iPad or iPhone that contains photos that are interesting and certainly not run-of-the-mill sunsets and flowers. A variety of photographers have combined to submit some of their favorite work, and they offer some commentary about the images.
There are shots of urban landscapes, people, and nature images, but none are what I would call the standard 'pretty pictures'. That said, the images are striking, and the thoughts behind the images are often illuminating. You won't like everything you see, but there is plenty to choose from.

Google killing Google Checkout, migrating some to Google Wallet
Today, Google made it known to its array of merchants that it is discontinuing the Google Checkout functionality, and migrating some existing users to Google Wallet. In a blog post announcing the move, Google called the Wallet product "a platform that enables merchants to meet the demands of a multi-screen world where consumers shop in-stores, at their desks and on their mobile devices." Users have six months to find an alternative solution, if not migrated automatically.

Following the opening of a new retail location in Melbourne last month, Apple is set to open another Australian Apple Store on May 25, this time in Adelaide. The Adelaide Apple Store will be Apple’s 20th retail location in Australia, and it is located at Rundle Place, a four-story shopping center that houses more than 70 stores. DeNA to publish Godus on iOS
Peter Molyneux's studio 22cans has been working on a Populous followup game called Godus, and the company has just announced a deal for a publisher. DeNA, the Japanese company behind the Mobage social platform, will be publishing Godus on iOS. And the game will also connect up to Mobage in Western companies and in Japan and Korea.
DeNA is an interesting choice for Molyneux -- the company is usually known for casual games, and the audience is largely Japanese so far. But DeNA has definitely been looking to expand to the west and seeking well-known developers to do that with, including a game they're working on with

Senators Levin, McCain accuse Apple of exploiting offshore tax havens
In the wake of Apple's published testimony, US Senators Carl Levin (D-MI) and John McCain (R-AZ) have released their own joint statement on the work of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. "Apple Inc. has used a complex web of offshore entities -- including three foreign subsidiaries the company claims are not tax resident in any nation -- to avoid paying billions of dollars in U.S. income taxes," Levin's office writes.

Samsung shows 4.99, 10.1 and 13.3-inch displays exceeding retina spec
Samsung Display announced today that it is showcasing several mobile to extra-large-sized display prototypes at the Society for Information Display's Display Week. AT&T to enable FaceTime over cellular for all customers by end of 2013
In a statement provided to The Verge, AT&T has indicated that all iPhone subscribers will be able to use FaceTime via a cellular connection by the end of 2013.
For video chat apps that come pre-loaded on devices, we currently give all OS and device makers the ability for those apps to work over cellular for our customers who are on Mobile Share or Tiered plans. Apple, Samsung and BlackBerry have chosen to enable this for their pre-loaded video chat apps. And by mid-June, we'll have enabled those apps over cellular for our unlimited plan customers who have LTE devices from those three manufacturers. Apple rolls out new iPhone incentives in India
Apple has been making moves over the last year to expand its market share in India after its net profit for their India devision increased 431 percent year to year. Tripling the amount of franchise stores in the country? Check. Trade-in incentives? Check. Now the incentives are continuing with expansions for college students and American Express customers.
The first incentive is designed to draw students into picking up an iPhone. Currently non-student residents who trade-in their smartphones for an iPhone get 7,000 rupees (US$130). Students, however, get 7,777 rupees (around $144) for their trade-in.

Yahoo's Flickr Gets Major Design Overhaul, 1TB of Free Photo Storage Space
Following this morning's acquisition of Tumblr, Yahoo today hosted an event in New York City to detail changes to its popular photo sharing site Flickr. Flickr on the web has been given a major design overhaul, with a focus on full resolution pictures. In addition to eliminating much of the white space on the site, Flickr is now displaying in-line photo streams that encompass the majority of the screen and detailed photo-centric profile pages. Flickr has also implemented a slideshow mode to allow its users to flip through photos hands-free. Yahoo raises the stakes for free Flickr storage: 1 terabyte
It's official: Yahoo! CEO Marissa Meyer has gone completely bonkers, as the Yahoo-owned Flickr has just announced that all users now have a free terabyte of storage. That's a thousand gigabytes, folks. For free.
As the Flickr website touts, 1 terabyte will hold 537,731 photos at an average size of 6.5 megapixels each. No more are you going to need to scale down the size of your images to fit 'em on Flickr -- just upload them at their native resolution.
It's worth remembering that Flickr has a free iPhone app available to facilitate uploading, viewing, and sharing your images.

Burj Al Arab in Dubai Introduces Gold-Plated iPads for Guest Use [iOS Blog]
The Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai is perhaps the world's most luxurious hotel, and the latest addition continues that tradition. The seven-star hotel is now giving 24-carat gold-plated iPads from Gold & Co to guests for use during their stay. The iPads will act as a 'virtual concierge', offering information on restaurants in the hotel, as well as spa treatments and butler services. They carry the Burj Al Arab's logo on the back and they are available for purchase in the hotel's boutique.

Apple releases Senate testimony as panel announces it avoided billions in taxes
A Congressional panel has found that Apple avoided billions in taxes, the New York Times reports, thanks to an intricate network of subsidiaries throughout the globe. The structure of some of these sub-companies in certain countries made them exempt from paying or filing taxes or record-keeping laws.
The Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations found that kept $74 billion from the IRS between 2009 and 2012. Apple is not charged, however, with breaking any laws.
Apple has published the full text of its upcoming testimony to the Senate congressional panel, which it's scheduled to make on Tuesday

A Senate subcommittee has released a 40-page memo accusing Apple of not paying billions of dollars in federal taxes through "extensive tax-avoidance strategies". Yahoo debuts new Flickr; 1TB of storage space, new Android app
