Vonage offers unlimited VoIP calling to mobile phones in 42 countries
It's been a while since we've heard much from the ever-embattled VoIP provider, but it looks like Vonage might still have a couple tricks up its sleeve. The company's latest service plan, known as World Premium Unlimited, offers unlimited calling to mobile phones in 42 countries -- and landlines in 80 -- for $55 a month. This plan also provides for unlimited local and long distance service in the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico, and requires callers to use a touch tone phone, hooked up to the internet by way of a Vonage adapter, to make calls to places like the UK, Mexico, and Brazil. T-Mobile G-Slate official for April 20 for $750 off-contract
T-Mobile on Tuesday made a late commitment to full launch details for the LG G-Slate. Its adaptation ships tomorrow, April 20, for the promised $530 on a two-year contract, though only for existing T-Mobile phone subscribers; the price rises to $630 for others. NASA awards $270 million to SpaceX and other commercial spaceflight ventures
NASA has given its seal of approval (and a lot of money) to SpaceX and three other private companies, as part of its Commercial Crew Development (CCDev2) initiative -- a program designed to spur the development of U.S. commercial spaceflight. Microsoft won't rule out pure tablet OS, holding off
Microsoft UK managing director Ashley Highfield in an interview on Tuesday left the door open for the possibility of a dedicated tablet OS. While he wouldn't say Microsoft was developing such a platform, he allowed the possibility at some point in the future. Motorola delays Droid Bionic launch until summer to make 'several enhancements'
There's not a lot of details on this one, but the Wall Street Journal has just confirmed with Motorola that the launch of the Droid Bionic will be delayed until summer, and that it might not be available for purchase until sometime in the third quarter (or late summer, in other words). Apple v. Samsung lawsuit reveals iPhone, iPod, iPad sales
As a consequence of its lawsuit against Samsung, Apple has revealed data on its iPhone, iPad and iPod touch sales, reports note. "As of March 2011, more than 108 million iPhones had been sold worldwide," a section of Apple's complaint filing reads. ITC rules in favor of HTC and Nokia in Apple infringement case
The ITC weighed in on the infringement complaint Apple filed against HTC and Nokia and decided the two handset manufacturers are not liable for infringing on Apple's patents.
In the Monday hearing, Apple accused HTC of infringing five Apple patents that focus on the "seamless integration of hardware and software." The patents describe methods for signal processing and inter-process communications. Nokia allegedly infringes on one of these signal processing patents. Apple sought a ban on the import of HTC's Android handsets as well as select Nokia devices.

The Onion, one of our favorite sources for fake news. Has done a talking heads analysis of whether the unemployed should buy Apple computers. In typical Onion fashion, they miss the point -- on purpose of course.

Acer releases Aspire One 722 netbook, tries to make molded plastic happen

T-Mobile Bobsled brings VoIP calling to Facebook, iOS, more
T-Mobile chose Tuesday to kick off the launch of a unique VoIP calling service. Bobsled lets Facebook owners call each other over VoIP by using Facebook contact information alone instead of separate IDs. The web version of the app can leave voicemail either as a message or on a user's wall; the recipient doesn't need the app loaded in Facebook to answer.

AT&T affirms: Windows Phone 7 NoDo rollouts start today for Focus and Quantum owners

Apple adds third supplier of iPad 2 touchscreen components
Chimei Innolux Corp. is joining TPK Holding Corp. and Wintek Corp. as the third provider of touch panel sensors for the Apple iPad 2. Chimei will begin supplying the panels next month, Bloomberg said. TPK and Wintek will still be the primary suppliers of the touch panels, but Chimei's contribution will help Apple meet the growing demand for its popular tablet device.

iOS overwhelms Android by 59% if MP3 players, tablets count
iOS outperforms Android by a wide 59 percent margin when every class of device is considered, comScore found Tuesday. In its first real study of mobile platforms beyond smartphones, the research team saw the iPad, iPhone, and iPod making up a combined 37.87 million devices in the US, or 16.2 percent share. iMac supplies beginning to dwindle, sources claim
iMac availability is rapidly shrinking, say three different sources, including two in the US and one in an unidentified Asian country. Supplies of 21- and 27-inch models are listed as "constrained" according to leaked information, with no ETA on when new shipments might be delivered to a "very large" unspecified region. Sprint to pay at least $1 billion to use Clearwire's 4G network through 2012
Although it might not make a difference to consumers, the 4G network ripping through Sprint-branded devices such as the EVO 4G doesn't actually belong to the carrier. Rather, Sprint rents use of Clearwire's network, and the two have been duking it out for months over just how much that service is worth. That battle finally came to an end today when Sprint, which happens to be Clearwire's majority owner, agreed to pay at least $1.03 billion this year and next to run its WiMAX devices on the network. Sonos adds AirPlay and Android: we go hands-on
Sonos on Tuesday rolled out two major supported updates at once. Audio devices like the ZonePlayer S5 can now pipe audio through AirPlay using an indirect route. Wiring up an AirPort Express to a Sonos device through Ethernet and the line-in jack will let any AirPlay audio go through a ZonePlayer as though it were another source on the network.

ITC spricht sich gegen ein US-Importverbot für Nokia und HTC aus
Die US-Handelsaufsicht ITC hat sich in zwei Apple-Beschwerden auf die Seite von Nokia und HTC gestellt. In an interview with Pocket-lint, Microsoft UK's Ashley Highfield said the company won't be delivering a dedicated OS for tablets anytime soon. Developer Valve Software has released Portal 2, a sequel to a game originally bundled with The Orange Box in 2007. Portal 2 differs not only in being a separate retail product, but also a full-length title rather than a small side-project. Sony's Crackle app for iOS approved by Apple
A few months ago, we reported on how Apple rejected the Sony Reader app from the App Store, seemingly singling out the electronics and media company for punishment when similar apps like Amazon's Kindle and Barnes & Noble's Nook readers for iOS were untouched.
Sony appears to have decided to follow the old maxim that "if you at first don't succeed, try, try again," since they have had a new app for iOS approved by Apple. We're not sure why this was never mentioned before the BlackBerry Playbook launch, but it looks like AT&T customers opting for RIM's new tablet won't be able to take advantage of one key feature, at least officially. For reasons yet unknown, AT&T appears to be blocking folks from downloading BlackBerry Bridge to their BlackBerry smartphones, with the speculation being that it doesn't like the free tethering the Playbook enables. Apple banning pay-per-install apps from the App Store says Tapjoy
Apple is not only tweaking its App Store rankings to downrank pay-per-install applications, it may be actively banning these applications from the App Store. According to Tapjoy, several developers within their network are receiving rejection notices from Apple because their applications feature a pay-per-install promotion.
This cross-application promotion lets users buy virtual in-app goods by downloading other applications instead of sending a payment. This practice has been criticized because it artificially boosts the download counts of applications. Users download these advertised applications because they want something for free, not because the app is desirable.

Vietnamese site Tinhte (who have a decent record of leaks) has put out a video of what they claim is a) a white iPhone from Apple which is b) running some "test version" of iOS. As you can see in the video on the next page, multitasking in this mystery version presents you with a page full of screens for running applications. News broke yesterday that Apple filed a patent and trademark violation lawsuit against Samsung. The suit claims Samsung stole the physical look, hardware design, software packaging and user interface from Apple and used these Apple-inspired elements in its popular line of Galaxy smartphones and tablets.

iPhone dev-team releases untethered redsn0w jailbreak for iOS 4.3.2, iPad 2 not included
The iPhone dev-team released an untethered jailbreak for iOS owners running Apple's latest 4.3.2 firmware. Good news for jailbreakers as Apple did not patch the hole discovered by @i0n1c. The code for this exploit was used in the untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.1 and was easily ported over to the jailbreak for this latest version of iOS.
iPad 2 owners cannot join the jailbreak party as the 0.9.6rc14 version of redsn0w only supports the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (GSM), iPod touch 3G/4G and the first generation iPad. Point your browser to the dev-team's website for more information on the Mac and Windows version of redSn0w.

An internal memo suggests Apple is ending the US$30 MobileMe and iWork rebate program. The program offers customers a $30 discount on a $99 MobileMe subscription or the $79 iWork suite when they buy a new Mac. Sonos music systems now support AirPlay, but there's a catch
Sonos, creator of a well-reviewed, multi-room, wireless music system, has updated its software to support Apple's AirPlay. It means a Sonos music system owner can wirelessly send music from an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch to any room that has a Sonos Zone Player. The catch is that you have to buy a US$99 AirPort Express to plug into one of the Zone Players to get it working.

Sony Ericsson ships just 8.1m phones, keeps income afloat
Sony Ericsson on Tuesday saw its phone share contract further as it kept up its shift to smartphones. It saw a steep drop from 11.2 million phones in the fall to just 8.1 million phones in the winter. Samsung and Seagate on Tuesday lived up to last-minute rumors by forging a deal for their storage businesses. Under the terms, Samsung will fold its hard drive business into Seagate's while Seagate will in turn give Samsung drives for computers and other devices. Nokia has just released a Safari plug-in for its browser-based Ovi Maps 3D mapping software, and it is beautiful. The new mapping software renders lifelike 3D textured buildings in a level of detail that is unparalleled. The image above is from London, and as you can see, not only are the buildings rendered in photorealistic 3D textures, but bushes and trees are as well.
As of now, Nokia's 3D textures are limited to London, Oslo, New York and other big cities, with other cities to follow later. Es könnte so einfach sein: Samsung findet, dass rotierende Festplatten keine glorreiche Zukunft haben und verkloppt seine HDD-Sparte an Seagate, die 1,375 Milliarden Dollar auf den Tisch legen - aber warum nur? Wo doch rotierende Festplatten keine glorreiche Zukunft haben? Ebent. Darum haben Samsung und Seagate auch keinen schnöden Handel ausgemacht sondern ihre "Partnerschaft vertieft". Soll heißen? Erstens dass Seagate zukünftig Flash-Speicher-Technik und -Patente von Samsung abkriegt, um bei SSDs vorne dabei sein zu können. Und heißt zweitens dass Samsung die Hälfte des Kaufpreises für seine HDD-Sparte in Seagate-Aktien erhält, also indirekt sehr wohl auch noch im HDD-Busisness vertreten ist.

Portal 2 out now
Thanks to the hard work of the folks who purchased Valve's Potato Sack promotion, the Portal 2 alternate reality game has finished, and the long-awaited sequel is now available on Steam. The game officially releases tomorrow for consoles and PC, but since the Steam version is compatible with SteamPlay, it's also available for the Mac from day one.

Apple moves to dismiss antitrust lawsuit over iTunes
Apple has asked for an antitrust lawsuit -- brought on by complaints that linking iPod music downloading to iTunes was anti-competitive -- to be dismissed, arguing that the move to exclude third-party software from being able to download music directly to iPods wasn't anti-competitive, but done to ensure high quality between Apple's hardware and software, Bloomberg reports.

The iPhone Dev Team have published an "untethered" jailbreak for iOS 4.3.2, an improvement over an earlier hack that managed a tethered jailbreak of some iOS 4.3.2 devices -- but even the updated copy of redsn0w (version 0.96rc13) made available today does not yet work with the iPhone 4 or the iPad 2, though a fix is pending for the iPhone 4 and the group has indicated that it will update their utility Pwnage Tool once that fix becomes available.

ASUS may only ship 100,000 Transformers due to shortages
ASUS could face anemic shipments of the Eee Pad Transformer based on claims from Taiwan's Apple Daily [note: Apply isn't correct]. The company had planned to ship 200,000 of the Android 3.0 tablet in April but has allegedly faced a touch panel shortage that would cut its production numbers to less than 100,000. redsn0w untethered jailbreak updated for iOS 4.3.2, still no love for iPad 2
Good news for all iOS jailbreakers: turns out the latest 4.3.2 update is still vulnerable to the same untethered hacking method used by redsn0w for 4.3.1, so Dev-Team's @i0n1c simply had to port his code over to the new kernel to keep the jailbreak alive. As before, the almighty iPad 2 is still not supported here, and ultasn0w unlockers are reminded to wait for the new PwnageTool release later this week, but the rest of you can go ahead and grab the new tool at the source link.

The browser-based app renders a true 3D, textured version of a map with buildings, landscapes, and other key points going down in some cases to the individual tree level. Google: Tablets taking the place of other activities
People enjoy their iPads, e-readers and other tablet devices, and the devices are changing the way people interact with content -- they are increasingly being used at the expense of time spent on laptop or desktop computers, a recent Google study finds. The company's mobile advertising network AdMob conducted the study of 1,400 "tablet" users in March (almost all of whom would have to be iPad or e-reader users, as few competing non-ebook tablets have yet sold very well) and presented the results in a PDF slideshow published on their Mobile Ads blog.

Adult Swim looks to release one mobile game a month
Jeff Olsen of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim division did a quick interview with our fellow bloggers at Joystiq, and he says that in addition to the Android launches the company is doing this week, they are expecting to "get to the point where we can release a new mobile game a month."
That would create quite a library of Adult Swim titles. The company has already seen a fair amount of success with its current setup of iOS titles, including the very popular Robot Unicorn Attack. Olsen says the idea is to keep working on Flash games that are promoted through the TV channel

Apple asks judge to dismiss iTunes monopoly lawsuit
It's been a busy day for Apple lawsuit news. First word broke that Apple has dropped a massive suit on Samsung for allegedly infringing on the iPhone and iPad's look and feel, now we get word that Apple has asked a judge to dismiss a lawsuit that claims iTunes is a monopoly. The lawsuit stems from Apple's 2004 blocking of RealNetwork's Harmony software, which allowed songs purchased from the RealNetworks online store to be transferred to the iPod. Last month, a judge ordered that Steve Jobs must submit to deposition in the lawsuit.

Nokia launches Ovi Maps 3D beta, challenges Google Earth as your virtual tour guide of choice
Still searching for today's internet time sink? Then look no further than Nokia's just launched beta version of Ovi Maps 3D. Thanks to a little help from Navteq's maps and some software wizardry, it's now able to display cities in a new 3D view that you're able to zoom in and around to your heart's content. NPD says Blu-ray, DVD videos still dominate over digital
The NPD Group in a new study suggested that Internet video had done little to dislodge Blu-ray and DVD as the dominant forms for movies. About 78 percent of the money spent on watching at home in the US was spent on one of the two disc formats exclusively while 15 percent were spending it on a hybrid service with both Internet and physical rentals, like Netflix. The remaining seven-plus percent accounted for every other digital and pay-per-view service combined, including iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, and cable or satellite watching.

Fruit Ninja shirts appearing at Hot Topic
Halfbrick Studios' iOS game Fruit Ninja continues to grow -- the Australian company announced that it has inked a deal to sell Fruit Ninja-flavored apparel in Hot Topic (the clothing store at the mall that's about as tacky as it gets). New TI Qi chip may see wireless charging on tiny devices
Texas Instruments started the week by promising a very small wireless power chip, the bq51013, that could lead to the technology spreading to other devices. Its design measures just 0.12 inches at its longest point, 80 percent less than TI's previous version, but can still provide the 5W of inductive power needed for smartphones, MP3 players, and most other mobile devices. Moleskine debuts app for iPad and iPhone
Moleskine has taken its popular journal and updated it for the 21st century with the debut of the Moleskine app for iPhone and iPad. The free app allows you to choose between font size, paper types (ruled, grid, or blank), and text colors. It also comes with some now-standard features that most notes apps have, including Facebook and Twitter sharing. It's funny how times change. In 2008 Microsoft released Photosynth for Windows, an impressive technology that allowed the stitching of several photos into one large panorama. Microsoft said at the time that "they weren't cool enough to run on Mac OS."
