After a brief unofficial discovery, Google on Thursday confirmed that Google Maps 5.7 has the first experimental support for local maps downloads. Taking advantage of Maps 5's vector-based maps, Android users can zoom into an area and download map data within a 10 mile radius of a map point they've found. The feature can take several minutes but gives travelers basic mapping in another country without having to pay for expensive roaming data.
