Young startup Pelican Imaging provided a glimpse at a new technology it expects to produce a major leap in the camera quality on smartphones and tablets. Rather than have a monolithic camera sensor, it would distribute the image across a grid of sensors that would then stitch the image together. It would avoid issues such as excess noise or chromatic effects that come from too dense a sensor or too small a lens while keeping the design thin and small enough to work on a slim device.
