Sony pulls 2.40 firmware update after reports of bricked PS3s

Sony has pulled the 2.40 firmware update from both its in-console update and website after some users reported that the firmware has bricked their system. SCEA PR director Patrick Seybold told Joystiq that Sony is "looking into it right now and will work with those customers directly to address any issues they may be experiencing." South Korea's "ubiquitous" Songdo city begins to take shape

Ubisoft makes move to the Mac
Ubisoft and TransGamming have confirmed plans to release multiple Ubisoft titles for the Mac, using the Cider engine.
Games Industry reports Catz, Dogz, and CSI: Hard Evidence will be the first titles released under the partnership. TransGaming has signed a multi-title agreement with Ubisoft that will bring titles immediately to the Mac community via gametreeonline.com, TransGaming's digital distribution portal.
"Ubisoft is extremely excited about the partnership with TransGaming to bring our titles to the Mac," said Jay Cohen, senior vice president of publishing at Ubisoft.
"To expand our business position and serve the growing Mac gaming community, additional key titles will follow later this year, including several day-and-date releases this Fall," he added.
Ubisoft's Petz series will be available immediately for consumers to purchase and download

Casio sure seems to be confident in its new transmissive LCD panel, so confident that it apparently thinks it can make it with a name like "Blanview." The big innovation here, Casio says, is that it's managed to develop a new system that pulls outside light into the LCD panel to make the transmissive LCD usable outdoors without backlighting, eliminating the need for so-called "semi-transmissive" LCD panels that are more commonly used today. Here's one of those inventions that just makes sense. The Hidden Tap by Jelmer Moorman uses a sensor to follow your hands and dispense water. As you move your hands from left to right under the faucet, water goes from hot to cold just like like a regular tap. AMD jagt Intel Marktanteile ab
AMDs Anteil an den weltweiten Mikroprozessor-Umsätzen ist im ersten Quartal 2008 gegenüber dem Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahrs um 2,2 Prozent auf 13 Prozent gestiegen. More than 100 GFlops under PowerFractal!
Without a doubt, we've continued to play with our overclocked Mac Pro. Alas, the heat yesterday has not served us well, and we were unable to repeat our feat at a stable 3.7 GHz. We've become content with 3.6 GHz (for an October 3rd CPU, with a 2 GHz default clock speed) is a 11% overclock the CPU. We still made some tests on this frequency.

The company blankets chips in order to draw up a very precise map of hot spots or cold, and optimize their operations by distributing the best workload in the most optimized areas. AMD wants to push up its Radeon HD 4870

AMD has managed a nice clip with its Radeon HD 4870. These cards are very powerful and can even tease the GeForce GTX 280. iPhone with slide out keyboard on the way?
Yes! According to the sometimes accurate and always wittily sarcastic (in a British sort of way) Register.co.uk. They go on to give all of the prerequisite "rampant speculation alerts" but say they have contacts inside mobile operators (ahem O2? you are now on Jobso's shitelist) who have seen the device.
According to their source, the slide out keyboard isn't perfect but it does work and there are prototypes aimed at the corporate market. That would indicate that they will be available fairly soon. El Reg says one year, but that seems kind of a long way off if the carriers are already messing with it.

AT&T selling iPhones sans plan for $600-$700
Yes, you heard right! Ma Bell is slanging iPhones without plan obligations in the US for $400 extra without a contract. The unlocked devices will not allow users to switch SIMs however when they travel overseas which would negate most of the benefit of buying without a contract.
As it stands, it is hard to see why someone would buy without a plan because you can opt out of your AT&T plan right after signing up for much less money. This isn't a prepaid contract either, AT&T is still working on that

It has been a busy day here in iPhone land. The latest bit of rumor news comes fron the Boy Genius report. According to their "reliable source" the iPhone will be available later this year from Best Buy and Radio Shack. The deals are already secured and the iPhones are en route.

4,000 apps initially through Apps Store
There will be 4,000 applications immediately for sale on the App Store, which launches 11 July.
Business Week suggests the claim in a report which takes a birds-eye view of what's to come, including applications for productivity, health, remote working, customer relationship management and more.

Huge Apple flash order hints iPod upgrade
Apple has placed huge orders for flash memory, forcing Samsung to inform less important customers it plans to reduce the quantity of flash it will ship to them from July.
We already know Apple and its manufacturing partners are already building new model iPhones, and its conceivable the flash memory order is for future manufacturing of the product.
"Samsung recently informed them it has secured orders for 50 million 8GB-equivalent flash chips mainly for use in Apple's iPhone," DigitTimes reports. "Amid the new orders, Samsung said it would sharply cut supply to other customers in July."

iPhone 3G auch in den USA ohne Vertrag
AT&T spricht - die Aktie springt: Wie der US-amerikanische Netzbetreiber AT&T am Dienstag verkündete, wird das iPhone 3G in den USA auch ohne Vetrag über die Ladentische gehen. Microsoft hat Berichte bestätigt, denen zufolge das Unternehmen die Suchmaschine Powerset übernommen hat. News: O2 to launch iPhone 3G at 7 a.m., limited one per person
O2 will officially launch the iPhone 3G in the United Kingdom on July 11 at 7:00 a.m. local time, and has also imposed a sales limit of one-per-person on the new handset. “Orders will be placed on a first come first served basis,” O2 said in a text message to customers explaining the need for the sales limitation. “We will be writing to you again before the 11th with details about how you can place your order.”

Huge Apple flash order hints iPod upgrade
Apple has placed huge orders for flash memory, forcing Samsung to inform less important customers it plans to reduce the quantity of flash it will ship to them from July.
We already know Apple and its manufacturing partners are already building new model iPhones, and its conceivable the flash memory order is for future manufacturing of the product.
"Samsung recently informed them it has secured orders for 50 million 8GB-equivalent flash chips mainly for use in Apple's iPhone," DigitTimes reports. "Amid the new orders, Samsung said it would sharply cut supply to other customers in July."

ICQ sperrt (nicht nur) ältere Clients aus
Verbindungsprobleme stellten Anwendern alternativer oder älterer ICQ-Clients fest, als sie sich anmelden wollten. Der ICQ-Dienst meldet den entsprechenden Benutzern, dass ihr Client zu alt sei. Nicht alle alternativen Clients waren betroffen, einige konnten weiter verwendet werden. In den Foren auf ICQ.com äußern Anwender Unverständnis für die erhöhten Anforderungen zur Verwendung des Messaging-Clients, teils weil sie eine ältere Windows-Version verwenden und ICQ 6 nicht installieren können, oder ICQ 6 ihnen schlicht nicht gefällt.

EU approves Nokia's acquisition of NAVTEQ, Google signs with Tele Atlas
Filed under: GPSIn the brave new world of GPS, Nokia and NAVTEQ are one as are TomTom and Tele Atlas. At least that will be the picture within 5 business days. With the European Commission's "unconditional approval" granted, Nokia can now close the deal on its planned, $8.1 billion acquisition of NAVTEQ. What makes the whole thing a bit more interesting is that Google signed a long term agreement with Tele Atlas on Monday which gives it access to Tele Atlas maps for use in any of Google's mobile, desktop, and on-line offerings. A move likely to put Android in even greater competition with Nokia which opted out of the Open Handset Alliance. Good times.

iPod touch: Januar-Update gibts nicht mehr
Dem US-Magazin Macworld ist aufgefallen, dass Apple das so genannte Januar-Update für den iPod touch, die Erweiterung um die Programme Karten, Mail, Aktien und Wetter, still und leise aus dem iTunes Store entfernt hat.
Es liegt auf der Hand, dass die Einstellung dieses Angebots in Zusammenhang mit der für 11. Juli angekündigten Softwareversion 2.0 für den iPod touch und das iPhone steht. Die Kosten für das Update eines iPod touch belaufen sich voraussichtlich auf 9,95 Euro und es ist zumindest anzunehmen, dass die neue Softwareversion die zuvor separat erhältlichen Programme gleich mitbringt.

Auch wenn Firefox in Version 3 erschienen ist, wird Firefox 2 für konservative Anwender weitergepflegt. Mit Version 2.0.0.15 wurden insgesamt 12 Sicherheitslücken geschlossen, welche teilweise die Einschleusung schädlicher Programmanweisungen ermöglichten. The concept had captured us: the product is very compact and does not need ink cartridges - the pigments are included in the paper.
Les Numériques had the opportunity of testing this product, and the result disappointed them. The iPhone at APR(France) from July 18

Doch jetzt veröffentlichte AT&T seine Tarifkonditionen und stellte darin auch die Planung in Aussicht, "in Zukunft" das iPhone vertragsfrei für 599 bzw. 699 US-Dollar anzubieten. Bis dahin aber können Kunden in den USA nur mit Vertrag den AT&T-Shop verlassen.

Widescreen LCDs going widescreen by 2010

The term "widescreen" is one of the most notoriously confusing monikers this side of Full HD used to describe a display's specifications. Widescreen generally translates to a 16:10 aspect ratio when discussing computer LCDs (monitors or laptop displays) or 16:9 if your talking about the living room TV. Of course, it can also refer to the 2.35:1 ratio often used for films or something entirely different if you're Apple touting the wonders of your new widescreen iPhone. Fortunately, we're trending towards at least some convergence around the 16:9 aspect.

Mac OS X close to 8%
Net Application has published its latest reading of the market shares of various systems of exploitation used on the Internet.
It confirms the constant progression of Apple with Mac OS X reaching 7,94% during June, a record for Apple. Mac Intel represent now more of two thirds of the Apple machines, the PPC Macs continuing in a logical way to drop in proportion.
Another news that will please Apple: the iPhone now accounts for 0,16% of the machines present on the web, which is far from negligible. On the other hand, Safari for Windows does not progress and this will disappoint Apple.

US-Justizministerium prüft Google-Yahoo-Deal
Nach dem US-Senat hat nun auch das US-Justizministerium eine formelle Untersuchung zum Werbedeal zwischen Google und Yahoo eingeleitet. Bei Orange verzögert sich das iPhone um rund eine Woche

AT&T selling iPhones sans plan for $600-$700
Yes, you heard right! Ma Bell is slanging iPhones without plan obligations in the US for $400 extra without a contract. The unlocked devices will not allow users to switch SIMs however when they travel overseas which would negate most of the benefit of buying without a contract.
As it stands, it is hard to see why someone would buy without a plan because you can opt out of your AT&T plan right after signing up for much less money. This isn't a prepaid contract either, AT&T is still working on that

Less than $500 for a 128 GB SSD
