Apple VP of Product Design Doug Fields set to take on new gig at Tesla
Tesla announced today that it recently hired Doug Field, a former VP of Product Design at Apple. If you recall, Field originally joined Apple back in 2008. Prior to that, he served as the CTO at Segway.
A press release from Tesla notes that Field, during his tenure at Apple, helped develop a number of Mac-based hardware products, including but not limited to the most recent iterations of the MacBook Pro and iMac.

Für eine warme Nacht.
Morgen Freitag kommen die neuen iPhone-Modelle «iPhone 5s» und «iPhone 5c» auch in der Schweiz auf den Markt. Wie immer in den Stunden vor der Marktlancierung bilden sich vor den Apple Stores rund um die Welt Menschenschlagen — man will zu den ersten Gehören, die das neue iPhone ihr Eigen nennen können. Andere wollen es «einfach mal miterlebt haben», wie es ist, eine Nacht lang vor dem Store auszuharren und am Morgen dann unter frenetischem Applaus der Apple-Angestellten den Store für den iPhone-Kauf betreten zu dürfen.
Für den diesjährigen iPhone-Launch etwas besonderes einfallen lassen: Die Ersten, die sich bereits am Donnerstag-Abend vor den Apple Store in Zürich stellen, sollen von uns unterstützt werden. Schliesslich startet der Verkauf erst am Freitag um 8 Uhr und das Zuwarten die ganze Nacht hindurch ist — besonders Ende Oktober — eine doch eher «kältere» Geschichte.

Chitika: OS X Mavericks adoption rate three times faster than Mountain Lion
When iOS 7 hit the world last month, Chitika Research was there to tell us how quickly the new mobile operating system was being adopted by users based on how many ad impressions were coming from devices running the new OS. Now they've done the same for OS X Mavericks, and results from the first 24 hours show that 5.5 percent of all Macs are now running the new version.

Update-Warnung: Neue iWorks-Apps mit eingeschränktem Funktionsumfang
Anspruchsvollen Anwendern nicht zu empfehlen Apple hat am Dienstag nicht nur neue Hardware vorgestellt, sondern neben Mavericks auch neue iWork- und iLife-Apps. Is Mail not saving your iCloud password after the Mavericks update? Here's a work around.
There's a lot to like about the newly released OSX Mavericks, but like any new OS there are a few bugs. We've noticed that some users are experiencing a problem with the Mail app not remembering their iCloud password when the program is opened. It's annoying to have to input your password every time you fire up the app, so here's a simple work around.
Open the Mail app. Go to preferences. Click on the Accounts tab, and then the Advanced tab.
Look for the Authentication box. If you're having this problem, it will be set to "Password." Click on the box and select "Apple Token."

Apple Continues to Sell the iPad 2 Because Customers Are Still Buying It
Some observers may have wondered why Apple would continue to sell the iPad 2 for $399 after announcing the iPad Air and Retina iPad mini on Tuesday. The answer, according to new research from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, is because customers are still buying the two-year old tablet. The iPad 2 accounted for some 22 percent of iPad sales in the September quarter, down significantly from prior quarters, but it appears there is still more than enough demand for a cheaper, full-size iPad, particularly for the education sector. "Despite this quarter including back-to-school sales, the iPad 2, which accounted for a third of sales for the prior six months, seems to have started to show some age, after several strong quarters," said Josh Lowitz, Partner and Co-Founder of CIRP.

Apple TV Software Updated to Version 6.0.1
Apple released version 6.0.1 of the Apple TV software today, capping a week of new product updates. There is no indication yet about what has changed in the new release. The last Apple TV update occurred back in September following the public release of iOS 7 for the iPhone and iPad. That release added support for iTunes Radio, AirPlay from iCloud and new podcast functionality. Apple has yet to update its Apple TV software update page with details about version 6.0.1. If you regularly flag messages in the iOS 7 Mail app, you may have noticed that the traditional flag icon has been replaced by an orange dot, similar to that used for unread messages, simply presented in a different colour. Ulysses III gets monster "Warp 1" update
With a week to go until the beginning of NaNoWriMo, it's not surprising that a favorite text editing tool has received an update. Ulysses III version 1.1 brings -- according to The Soulmen -- over 287 tweaks, fixes and optimizations, including OS X Mavericks compatibility "bang on time".

As part of its efforts to ensure that all eligible software owners are able to upgrade to the latest versions of its software on the Mac App Store, Apple is intentionally allowing users with any version of Aperture, iLife and iWork installed on their system to upgrade to the latest versions on the Mac App Store -- even illegally acquired or trial versions. Mavericks is breaking multi-display setups for some
OS X Mavericks sports a number of bullet points meant to improve usability for multi-display setups, but it seems that while adding a menu bar to every screen has worked swimmingly, users with monitors that rely on DisplayLink technology have been swimming in nothing but frustration. Adobe: Flash Player now sandboxed in Safari on OS X Mavericks
In a move that is designed to make playing Flash content on your Mac more secure, Adobe has announced that Flash Player is sandboxed in Safari on OS X Mavericks. A sandbox profile for the Flash plugin was created by Adobe for inclusion in the Webkit project, with Webkit being the browser engine behind the scenes in Safari.
How does the sandbox profile work? It basically tells Webkit (and thus Safari) to allow the plugin to only read and write files to specific items, limiting just how much damage a malicious attacker could do when taking over control of Flash through a vulnerability. Wie Apples neuer Mac Pro hergestellt wird
Apple hat während des Special Events vom Dienstag weitere Details zum neuen Mac Pro bekannt gegeben. Besonders stolz zu sein scheint man bei Apple auf die Produktion des neuen Mac Pro — dafür wurde auch ein Produkt-Video des Unternehmens gezeigt. Ever since Apple first gave us a peek at the all new Mac Pro at WWDC, Apple fans have been champing at the bit to learn more about the highly anticipated machine. Microsoft Surface Pro: Preisreduktion um 80 Euro

Nachdem Microsoft schon Ende August den Preis für das Surface Pro um 100 Euro senkte, ist das Tablet ab sofort noch günstiger zu haben. Diesmal beträgt der Preisnachlass 80 Euro - damit kostet die 64GB-Version des Surface Pro im MIcrosoft Store nun nur noch 699 Euro. 075 – eine zweite mobile Vorwahl für die Swisscom
Da die Nummerblöcke der bekannten Swisscom-Vorwahlnummer 079 in absehbarer Zeit aufgebraucht sein werden, hat der Schweizer Branchen-Primus beim Bundesamt für Kommunikation (BAKOM) einen Antrag für Nummern aus dem 075-Nummernbereich gestellt. Künftig wird die Swisscom mit «075» eine zweite mobile Vorwahlnummer ein. Vorerst sollen die neuen Vorwahlnummern für Daten-Abos vergeben werden.
Mit der Einführung des ersten digitalen Mobilfunknetzes in der Schweiz hat Swisscom 1993 die ersten SIM-Karten eingeführt – damals noch in Kreditkartengrösse. Mittlerweile sind laut Infos der Swisscom rund 6.4 Millionen Swisscom-SIM-Karten im Umlauf und die Zahl steige laufend an. Ein Grossteil der SIM-Karten werden in Mobiltelefonen, Smartphones, Tablets und Notebooks genutzt, aber auch für die Kommunikation von Maschinen mit anderen Maschinen seien rund 320’000 SIM-Karten im Einsatz.

Microsoft Manager zieht über neues iWork und neue iPads her
Microsofts Kommunikations-Manager Frank Shaw äusserte sich im offizielle Microsoft Blog sowohl zu den neu vorgestellten iPads als auch zur vollständig überarbeiteten iWork-Suite äusserst kritisch.
Shaw ist der festen Überzeugung, dass man mit dem iPad nicht produktiv arbeiten könne. Mavericks install problems: Can't install OS X Mavericks because my disk is damaged
A friend has been having a problem installing Mavericks with the message:"The OS X couldn't be started my because the disk is damaged and can't be repaired". We're looking into this error, but, judging from this Apple Support Communities topic, a lot of people are encountering this problem. The friend was confronted with having to reinstall OS X and run the Disk Repair utility. Their advice is to run Disk Utility before you start the install in the first place as they now have to go through the whole process again. Luckily they do have a Time Machine back up if everything goes wrong. We'll let you know what happens. Have you experienced this problem, let us know what you did to solve it in the comments below.

OS X Mavericks bringt spürbare Verlängerung der Akkulaufzeit
In einem ausführlichen Test mit dem Golden Master von OS X Mavericks wurden unter anderem die Energiesparfunktionen des neuen Betriebssystems ausgiebig getestet. Apple hat immer wieder darauf hingewiesen, dass OS X Mavericks besonders energieeffizient arbeitet. Bislang ist man aber eher von kleineren Optimierung der Akkulaufzeit ausgegangen.
Der von ArsTechnica durchgeführte Test weist nun dank dem Einsatz von OS X Mavericks eine signifikant verbesserte Akkulaufzeit nach. Die Batterielaufzeit des aktuellen 13-Zoll MacBook Air ist von 12.07 Stunden unter OS X Mountain Lion auf 15.68 Stunden unter OS X Mavericks gestiegen. Dies entspricht einer Laufzeitverlängerung von 30 Prozent.

Erster Mavericks-Test zeigt deutlich längere Akkulaufzeit
Bei OS X Mavericks hat sich Apple auf den Stromverbrauch konzentriert. Wie sich das auf die einzelnen Notebooks auswirkt, hat John Siracusa von Ars Technica getestet. Comics books aren't just for kids, and the sometimes adult content is putting Apple's content standards to the test. Last year there was a bit of a dustup over Brian K. Vaughan's Saga issue 12 being unavailable for purchase from the ComiXology app. Initially it looked like Apple was behind the ban due to the issue's sexual content, but eventually ComiXology took responsibility for pulling the issue. ComiXology's CEO said the issue was pulled based on an assumption of Apple's policies regarding content.

OS X Mavericks video tip: Using Automator and Speakable Items to control your Mac by voice
Earlier today, I highlighted some of the changes to Automator and AppleScript in OS X Mavericks. One of those feature changes involves the ability for Automator workflows and applications to be saved as Speakable Items. Speakable Items are items that can be launched by voice through the use of speech recognition that's built into OS X.
In this example video, I show how to use Automator and Speakable Items to launch three apps simply by saying "Good morning" to my iMac. Sure, it's not exactly a super-useful example, but can you imagine how powerful this can be to someone who doesn't have good motor

Wi-LAN Loses Patent Infringement Lawsuit Against Apple [iOS Blog]
Canadian firm Wi-LAN today lost an ongoing lawsuit against Apple over two patents related to CDMA, HSPA, Wi-Fi and LTE technologies. First filed in 2011, the lawsuit claimed that Apple infringed on Wi-LAN patents RE37,802 (CDMA/HSPA) and 5,282,222 (LTE/Wi-Fi). Wi-LAN, a company focusing solely on licensing its intellectual property, was attempting to win $248 million from Apple. SpyMeSat lets you know which satellites are looking at you
SpyMeSat is a clever US$1.99 iOS app from Orbit Logic Incorporated that lets you know when you are in range of an imaging satellite that might be snapping a picture of your location. You can see details on what imaging satellite is overhead, plus a map that updates a satellite's location in real time and a picture of what it looks like.
You can configure alerts to let you know when the satellite is nearby. The details of what a particular satellite can see are quite interesting, with some of the satellites having resolution of about one meter. That makes for a pretty detailed view, though I suspect classified satellites can do even better.
