Cut the Rope 2 will debut before year's end
If you've been following the various iterations of Cut the Rope over the past few years, you might have been wondering if developer ZeptoLab would ever treat us to a proper sequel. Well worry no more, as Cut the Rope 2 is now officially headed our way before the end of the year. According to a press release by ZeptoLab, the new title will "re-imagine the universe" of the previous titles, and yes, main character Om Nom is indeed featured prominently.
Along with the announcement of the sequel, the company revealed that the several versions of Cut the Rope have topped 400 million downloads worldwide. According to ZeptoLab's estimates, players are now cutting ropes at a whopping 42,000 per minute.
The company (curiously) didn't reveal what systems Cut the Rope 2 will debut for, but given

A Closer Look at Apple's A7 Chip from the iPhone 5s
Earlier this week, Canadian firm Chipworks released some photos showing the interior of Apple's new A7 chip from the iPhone 5s, as well as the new M7 "motion coprocessor" and other components. The firm has now had a chance to look at the A7's transistor die photo in detail and make a preliminary effort at identifying the various components of the chip. Chipworks stresses that the identifications are still tentative pending full circuit analysis, but that most of the identifications appear to make sense.We publish this with the caveat that these are best guesses – we have not done any real circuit extraction to confirm them. The dual-core CPU and cache make up ~17% of the die area, and the quad-core GPU and shared logic about 22%. French agency may slap Google with a €300,000 fine for privacy violations
Google has once again found itself in the hot seat over its data practices, and this time, a French agency is sounding the alarm. Earlier today, France's National Commission on Computing and Freedom (CNIL) threatened Google with a €300,000 fine due to the company's lack of compliance with a June decision aimed at protecting users' private data. Apple today posted a new job listing seeking a Maps Web User Interface Designer to "design, develop, and maintain complex front-end code for a new secret project." Apple named most innovative company in the world for 9th consecutive year
A recent survey of 1,500 senior executives conducted by The Boston Consulting Group has named Apple the most innovative company in the world nine years running.
The findings capture executives' views of their own innovation plans, as well as their opinions of other companies' innovation track records. As in past surveys, the 2013 results reveal the 50 companies that executives rank as the most innovative, weighted to incorporate relative three-year shareholder returns, revenue growth, and margin growth.

The 20th anniversary of Myst
Has it been 20 years? Seems like yesterday. In 1993 Myst was a seemingly endless and epic adventure game, with immersive sound and beautifully rendered graphics. I remember eagerly getting my CD-ROM copy at my local computer store and losing myself for hours on the mysterious island of Myst.
Originally written for the Mac by Robyn and Rand Miller, the game evolved for just about every computer or gaming platform. It's now even available for iDevices.
In the original game you clicked on objects with the mouse, and explored a world filled with beauty and some tough puzzles that at first seemed incomprehensible. In a way, it reminded me of an interactive version of

Steve Jobs iPhone Keynote Invalidates Rubber-Banding Patent in Germany
A German court has invalidated an Apple patent on a specific "rubber-banding" feature in iOS because it was demonstrated in Steve Jobs' iPhone introduction keynote in 2007, reports FOSS Patents. In the United States, inventors are allowed a twelve-month grace period between any public demonstrations of a new technology and the filing of a patent. However, Europe has no such grace period and public demonstrations prior to the filing of a patent -- even by the inventor of the technology being patented -- can be used as prior art to invalidate a patent. Analysts, pundits try to downplay Apple's record iPhone launch weekend
Last weekend, Apple sold nine million new iPhones, blowing away analyst expectations and setting a launch weekend record in the process. In fact, the nine million tally nearly doubles Apple's previous iPhone launch record.
Suffice it to say, the iPhone 5s and 5c are bonafide hits and, once again, Apple is struggling to manufacture iPhones fast enough to meet demand. Considering that many pundits and analysts recently expressed supreme confidence that Apple had peaked and was prepped for a decline, that's not too shabby.
Now you would assume that even Apple's most vehement critics wouldn't be so bold as to turn a blind eye to nine million units sold in just three days, right?

iPhone keynote video used to invalidate patent in Germany
The Federal Patent Court of Germany has determined that Apple's patent for a "Portable electronic device for photo management" is invalid due to the fact that Steve Jobs himself showed off the feature months before the patent was filed. The portion of the patent that has become an issue has to deal with the "bounce-back" effect that occurs when photos are dragged around the screen.

Archiving iPhone app workflows
For app developers and bloggers, it's very instructive to have an idea of what has changed in the user interface of an app. App developers can look back and see how both the "look and feel" and steps required to perform a workflow have changed, while bloggers and other writers can use the information to update books or write posts about upgrades. Apple's New 8-Core Mac Pro Shows Up in Benchmarks
Back in June soon after Apple offered a sneak peek at the new Mac Pro, a Geekbench result from the new machine appeared revealing some performance information about the machine under its internal product code name of AAPLJ90,1. That machine was running a 12-core Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2 at 2.7 GHz, representing what would be a high-end model of the machine. Today, a new Geekbench result that appears to be a second legitimate Mac Pro has appeared, this time running a lower-end 8-core Intel Xeon E5-1680 v2 chip at 3.0 GHz. As with the previous Mac Pro seen on Geekbench, this new machine is running a custom internal build of OS X Mavericks, in this case Build 13A3010.

German court rules Apple photo-management patent invalid because of Steve Jobs keynote
Germany's Federal Patent Court invalidated an Apple photo-management patent because Steve Jobs showed how the technology worked during a keynote months before the company applied for the patent in Europe.The Munich-based court invalidated the Apple patent Thursday, said court spokeswoman Ariane Mittenberger-Huber in an email Friday. MTA, AT&T declare winners of transit app contest
New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and AT&T announced the winners of the 2013 App Quest challenge this week. The challenge was designed to highlight the best mobile apps for the millions of MTA customers who tote up an impressive 2.6 billion trips each year on the MTA's buses, subways, and commuter rail trains.

Wie bitte? Videospiele und Konsolen waren in China verboten? Die haben doch trotzdem wie blöd gespielt oder? Ja, genau, wie man oben unschwer sehen kann. Und es gab ja auch immer mal Ausnahmen wie den China-eigenen iQue (iWhat?). Alles andere lief über den Schwarzmarkt. War ja eh auch gut für das inländische Raubkopie-Business. Nun ist das Verbot gefallen und man muss sich nur in Shanghai registrieren, damit man in den Rest von China auch Spiele und Konsolen exportieren darf. Es scheint so, als würden die 3D Effekte und Animationen in iOS 7 einige Nutzer dazu bringen, das ihnen übel wird. Im Apple Forum finden sich reihenweise User, die über Übelkeitsgefühle, Kopfschmerzen und ähnliches klagen. Der Parallax-Effekt ist allerdings wirklich sehr schnell ausgeschaltet wie der Screenshot oben zeigt. Seemingly not a week goes by without hearing some new story about a patent troll mysteriously emerging out of the woodwork, with questionable second-hand patents in hand, and suing a smorgasbord of tech companies for patent infringement. Apple spendet 65 Millionen USD für AIDS-Forschung
Apple hat inzwischen über 65 Millionen US-Dollar an Product(RED) gespendet. Dies verkündeten U2-Sänger Bono und die Clinton Global Initiative. Schenkt man den Zahlen eines internen Apple-Meetings Glauben, hat Apple allein seit Februar 2012 ca. 15 Millionen US-Dollar an Product(RED) gespendet. Insgesamt beläuft sich der Betrag auf über 65 Millionen US-Dollar. Angefangen hat es mit einer roten Sonderedition des iPod nano 2006. Design Drawings Purportedly Show Exact Dimensions of Smaller, Thinner iPad 5
Rumors of a narrower and thinner design for the fifth-generation iPad have been circulating for a number of months now, with Apple reportedly taking some design cues from the iPad mini in redesigning the full-size iPad with narrower side bezels, a thinner shell, and more rounded curves. News: Apple to pay $3.35M in Japan for click wheel infringement
The Tokyo District Court ordered Apple to pay 330 million yen (about $3.35 million) to Norihiko Saito for infringing on the Japanese inventor’s click wheel controller patent. Saito’s company applied for the patent in 1998, before Apple used a click wheel in its iPod. Saito sought 10 billion yen in damages, but received only a fraction of that amount. Fiksu: iOS 7 adoption rate at 58 percent after one week
For the past week, analytics and advertising firms have been checking in with word on the adoption rate of iOS 7 -- that is, what percentage of all iOS devices are currently running the new operating system. The latest is Fiksu of Boston, which announced yesterday that iOS 7 was on 58.5 percent of all Apple mobile devices that were accessing its clients' apps.
By comparison, iOS 6 was only at a 47.5 percent share after one week, while iOS 5 was just at 27.2 percent in the same amount of time.
Chitika has also updated its data, and now says that iOS 7 accounts for 51.8 percent of the Apple devices accessing its servers. For iOS 6, the company saw an uptake rate of 47 percent after one week.

Earlier this week, we noted that a number of regional carriers in the United States and Canada had begun announcing plans to begin selling the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c on October 1, representing a coordinated expansion of availability for the device even as iPhone 5s supplies remain extremely tight. MLB to use iOS 7's iBeacons for customized stadium experiences
Major League Baseball's iOS developer for the MLB app, Marc Abramson, has told Mashable that MLB will be using iOS 7's iBeacons protocol to turn the MLB.com At the Ballpark app into an interactive guide to stadiums. iBeacons are a new Core Location API in iOS 7 that allows any iOS device with a Bluetooth 4.0 chip (BLE) to know where it is in relation to other BLE devices. iBeacons pick up the micro-location of other iBeacon devices, thereby allowing an app on your phone to know where you are on a hyper-local level.

BlackBerry mit fast einer Milliarde Dollar Verlust

Die Quartalszahlen sind da. Wie erwartet hat BlackBerry im zweiten Quartal sehr hohe Verluste einstecken müssen. Wie hoch war auch schon angedeutet worden. 965 Millionen Dollar sind es geworden und auch auf der Einkommenseite sieht es mit 1,6 Milliarden im Vergleich zu2,9 im Vorjahresquartal sehr düster aus. Die Konsequenzen hatten wir schon gehört: 40% der Angestellten sollen entlassen werden, die Konsumentensparte aufgegeben und dafür soll sich auf die Business-Seite konzentriert werden. Und der Verkauf oder die Privatisierung von BlackBerry steht ja sowieso im Raum.

The Super HD higher bit rate stream applies less compression to the 1080p image, so the image looks crisper and sharper than a typical 1080p image. In a blog post announcing the move, Netflix said:
All Netflix members, regardless of their Internet service provider (ISP), now have access to the highest quality HD streams available on Netflix.
This means that the great TV shows and movies on Netflix will look even better on HD screens with a higher bit rate stream, Super HD, that applies less compression to the 1080p image.

Google Street View nun auch im Genfer CERN
Google hat in dieser Woche die Street-View-Aufnahmen aus dem Genfer Forschungszentrum CERN freigeschaltet. Die Forscher haben den Mitarbeitern von Google während zweier Wochen im Jahr 2011 Zugang zum Forschungszentrum verschafft. Aufgenommen wurde nicht nur der Tunnel, in welchem sich der Teilchenbeschleuniger befindet, sondern auch die grossen Detektoren, mit welchen die Forscher das Higgs-Boson finden wollten.
Die Aufnahmen aus dem CERN finden sich auch auf der Seite von «Google Maps Views». Bei Views kann man verschiedenste Sehenswürdigkeiten auf der ganzen Welt entdecken. Dazu zählen unter anderem auch Skigebiete in der Schweiz, wie Zermatt, St. Moritz, Arosa und andere.

HTC wieder ohne Beats: Komplett zurückgekauft für 265 Millionen Dollar

Beats war ja 2011 zu 50,1% an HTC gegangen, damals hatten sie 300 Millionen dafür bezahlt. 25% davon hatte Beats schon wieder gekauft, jetzt kauft Beats sich auch noch den Rest zurück und gibt 265 Millionen Dollar dafür aus. Partner bleiben sie dennoch. Die Gründe wurden offiziell nicht bekannt, Beats kann sich jetzt aber an die weitere Expansion in Richtung Boxen, Auto und Online-Streaming machen, ohne HTC auf die Füsse zu treten.

Doch kein Retina-iPad-mini in diesem Herbst?
Während es keine Anzeichen dafür gibt, dass sich die Markteinführung des iPad 5 auf ein späteres Datum verschiebt, bestehen in dieser Hinsicht Zweifel im Bezug auf ein mit einem Retina Display ausgerüsteten iPad mini, wie Analyst Rhoda Alexander von iHS iSuppli gegenüber CNET sagte. Die Produktionsvolumen des iPad mini deuten gemäss dem Analysten eher auf einen Verkaufsstart im ersten Quartal 2014 hin. Apple würde damit mit dem iPad mini das wichtige Weihnachts-Geschäft verpassen, was sich negativ auf die Verkaufszahlen und den Gewinn von Apple auswirken könnte.
Der Hauptgrund für die angebliche Verzögerung dürfte bei den asiatischen Zulieferern liegen. Der Start der Produktion ist gemäss Alexander nicht zu Vergleichen mit dem Start der Massenproduktion. Zudem muss Apple wohl Kompromisse eingehen, falls die nächste Generation des iPad mini mit einem Retina Display ausgestattet sein sollte.

Apple has released an update for iOS 7 that fixes security bugs found in the new mobile operating system for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. iOS 7.0.2 was released by Apple on Thursday, and is available to download and install now for all devices that are currently running iOS 7. Apple says that the update: "Fixes bugs that could allow someone to bypass the Lock screen passcode." Motion Abgelehnt: Kein Apple-Support für Schweizer Parlamentarier
Die Zürcher SP-Nationalrätin Jacqueline Fehr forderte in der Motion «IT-Support für Parlamentsmitglieder», dass sich auch Mac-Nutzer an die im Bundeshaus tätigen IT-Fachleute wenden können. Die Nationalrätin begründete ihr Begehren mit dem Umstand, dass die IT-Experten bei Problemen im Zusammenhang mit Computern, welche nicht mit Microsofts Windows betrieben werden, nicht helfen dürfen. Zudem ergibt sich Koordinationsbedarf, insbesondere bei der Schnittstelle zwischen den von der Bundesverwaltung unterstützten iOS-Geräten und den nicht unterstützten Macs. Als Mac-Nutzerin könne sie zudem nicht auf die Farbdrucker im Bundeshaus zugreifen.

Studie: iOS 7 ist das benutzerfreundlichste mobile Betriebssystem
Die Berater von «Pfeiffer Consulting» haben in einer neuen Studie die Benutzerfreundlichkeit von iOS 6 und iOS 7, Android, Windows Phone und BlackBerry verglichen. Der Schwerpunkt der Analyse lag nicht auf technischen Neuerungen, sondern bei denjenigen Funktionen, von welchen die Tester annahmen, dass sie für den täglichen Gebrauch relevant sind.
Gemäss den Resultaten ist iOS 7 das benutzerfreundlichste Betriebssystem mit einer Gesamtpunktzahl von 73.25. Die Analysten loben das neue Apple-Betriebssystem, welches iOS in die moderne Smartphone-Ära gebracht hat. iOS 7 fühle sich in der Ausführung flüssiger an als die Konkurrenten.
Auf dem zweiten Platz schaffte es die Vorgängerversion iOS 6 mit 70 Punkten. Gelobt wird insbesondere die Einfachheit des Betriebssystems, welche insbesondere unerfahrenen Nutzern helfen soll.

FAA Advisory Committee Recommends Relaxation of Electronic Device Restrictions on Commercial Aircraft
The Federal Aviation Administration advisory committee has recommended that electronic device restrictions on commercial aircraft be relaxed. Apple and Staples have agreed to a deal to sell various iPad and iPod models on the Staples online store in the U.S., reports 9to5Mac. The deal will potentially expand to Staples' retail stores as well if the company is able to sell a certain amount of iPads per week.The source says that if each Staples store refers one iPad sale per week in October, two per week in November, and five per week in December, Apple will be willing to sell iPads in physical Staples locations.If Staples is able to meet Apple's sales goals it could see its brick-and-mortar stores selling iPads and iPods by early 2014, according to 9to5Mac. EverDock Kickstarter universal dock blasts by funding goal, looks great
With rare exceptions, I prefer not to write about Kickstarter and Indiegogo projects until there's a good possibility that the project will be funded. In the case of a new, truly universal dock created by Utah-based FŪZdesigns called the EverDock, the project is not only well past its funding goal of US$50,000 with 20 days to go, but the design looks so good I may end up backing it.

Podcast sort order: A helpful look at the troubled Podcasts app
I love listening to podcasts and yes, I do use Apple's Podcasts app. I typically manage subscriptions on my iPhone, but recently launched iTunes and noticed that my shows seemed to be in a random order. They're not sorted by subscription order, or number of new shows or even most recent modification. How did they get this way?
It turns out the problem is twofold. I've re-ordered things based on my own preferences as best I could. I say that because the sort options Apple provides are confusing and seriously lacking. Here's a look at how iTunes 11.1 and Apple's Podcasts app sorts your podcasts.

Apple thus far has helped raise over $65 million in fight against AIDS
Apple to date has helped raise more than US$65 million in the fight against AIDS through the (Product) RED initiative which was founded by Bono and Bobby Shriver back in 2006.

Former iPod engineer designs kinetic desk
Former iPod engineer JP Labrosse has unveiled his company's first product: the Stir Kinetic Desk. The desk has a small touchscreen in the corner that you tap twice to activate standing mode. The desk rises so you can stand at it and do your work, instead of sitting through your day. Tap the touchscreen again to lower the desk into "sitting" mode.
But the desk is more than just a fancy mechanical thing with a touchscreen button. It also has a feature called "Whisper Breath" that enables the desk to literally give you a slight nudge to alert you to get up and walk around a bit.
