78% of new iPhones sold globally are iPhone 5s models
For all of the publicity that swirled around the less expensive and more colorful iPhone 5c, the reality is that the new iPhone 5s is the top dog in worldwide sales. That's the report from Localytics, a firm that analyzes mobile stats. In the data analysis that started Friday and ended yesterday, Localytics saw that despite some expectation that the iPhone 5c would fit perfectly with Chinese consumers, the fact is that 91 percent of iPhone sales there were for the more expensive iPhone 5s. Touch ID Bypass Detailed, 'Average Consumer' Shouldn’t Worry
Over the weekend, the Chaos Computer Club announced that it had bypassed Apple’s Touch ID sensor using a photograph of a fingerprint to create a fake fingerprint model. News: Apple TV 6.0 reposted, seemingly with iOS 7.0.2 inside
Apple TV has reposted its 6.0 software update. Interestingly, the update now appears to be based upon iOS 7.0.2, making Apple TV the first device to include this version of iOS. The iPhone 5c and 5s currently run iOS 7.0.1, as did the original version of the 6.0 software update. Apple pulled the most recent software update on Monday after complaints of bricking devices, among other issues.

Apple wants to buy more land for Oregon data center
Apple is considering purchasing another 96 acres of land in Prineville, Oregon in hopes of expanding its data centers even further, The Oregonian reports. The assistant planning director for Crook County confirmed to the paper that a company code named 'Project Pillar' has expressed interest in buying the land -- and The Oregonian believe that 'Project Pillar' is indeed Apple:
The property awaiting transfer is covered by the same tax break agreement that Apple now operates under. And Stenbeck said Pillar previously went by the code name Maverick -- that's the name Apple used last year when it paid $5.6 million to buy 160 acres of Crook County land for its first Prineville data center.

Following today's launch of updated iMacs, Apple has released an iMac (late 2013) EFI Update 2.1 for the new machines.This update is recommended for iMac (late 2013) models. Spreading manure: There's an app for that
In the 5-plus years since the App Store launched, it seems like there's been an app for almost everything. Today we get one step closer to removing that "almost" qualifier with the release of an app that allows dairy farmers to calculate how much manure they need to spread.
No, that's not a joke. The folks at DairyNZ Limited have released an app called FDE Calculator ("FDE" stands for Farm Dairy Effluent Spreading") that helps a farmer work out the nutrient loads in the manure he is spreading on his land. And though it's relatively easy to poke fun at an app that helps you spread $#!t (kind of like Twitter), the FDE Calculator is actually a very valuable tool to farmers since it can help them save a lot of money. Why smartphone marketshare is overrated... and not Apple's top priority
If you listen to the pundits, Apple really messed up by not making the iPhone 5c more affordable. The underlying assumption by those so quick to second guess Apple's iPhone 5c strategy is that Apple is losing the marketshare war with Android. Consequently, the reasoning goes, Apple needs to churn out some cheap devices (and quick!), flood the market and gain some of those elusive marketshare points back.
Apple, however, doesn't let marketshare be the overarching metric that guides its business strategy. Indeed, it's somewhat bewildering that analysts who get paid to make sense of the tech industry so often lose sight of the fact that marketshare in and of itself is not the be all and end all.

Gazelle saw 210% more Samsung trade-ins during iPhone 5s launch weekend
Apple experienced a record sales weekend for the launch of the iPhone 5s and 5c, so this news probably isn't surprising. Consumer electronics recycler Gazelle saw a lot of action during the same time, with almost four times as many trade-ins on launch day that during that same time frame during the iPhone 5 launch last year. It might be a number of Samsung smartphone owners jumping ship to the new iPhones, as Gazelle reported a 210 percent jump in trade-ins of Samsung phones during the launch weekend.

Benchmarks: iPhone 5s lives up to the hype
While much of the recent discussion about the new iPhone 5s and 5c has been about colors and availability, the Macworld Lab has been busy thinking about the new iPhones' performance. We put our brand new iPhone 5s and 5c to the test and found that the devices to live up to--and in some cases surpass--Apple's marketing claims.While many things about the new iPhones are similar to last year's iPhone 5 (including the 4-inch screen, 1136 by 640 pixel resolution, and storage capacity), there are a number of under-the-hood changes that range from subtle to startling.The iPhone 5s features a brand new 64-bit A7 processor running at 1.3GHz. The iPhone 5c is powered by Apple's A6 processor that was introduced in last year's iPhone 5. Apple says the new A7 chip is up to twice as fast as the A6 in both processing and graphics. IHS: iPhone 5s component tally reaches $199, iPhone 5c costs $173
Though it has a new camera module, faster processor and fingerprint sensor, the components in the new iPhone 5s are only slightly less expensive than those in the iPhone 5, says IHS. Not surprisingly, the iPhone 5c is cheaper than either the iPhone 5 or the iPhone 5s.
According to AllThingsD, which got an advanced look at the IHS report, the iPhone 5s costs US$199 to build, as compared to $205 for last year's iPhone 5. Components for the 16 GB iPhone 5s cost Apple $191, with another $8 tacked on for assembly. The jump to 64 GB of storage in the 5s bumps up the price by $11, bringing the final cost to $218 for the model.

New Apple Retail Store Opening in Woodbridge, Virginia This Saturday [Mac Blog]
Apple has announced that it will be holding a grand opening for its Potomac Town Center retail store in Woodbridge, Virginia this Saturday at 10:00 AM. Located right off of Interstate 95 about 20-25 miles south of Washington, DC, the new store is located in the Stonebridge at Potomac Town Center, a nearly year-old outdoor shopping center anchored by a Wegmans supermarket. At its media event introducing the new iPhones earlier this month, Apple highlighted several chip innovations included on the iPhone 5s including a new A7 main chip with one billion transistors and a smaller M7 "motion coprocessor" designed to efficiently measure accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass data and thus allow for enhanced fitness tracking, navigation, and more. As expected, Apple has updated the iMac with fourth generation Intel Haswell quad-core processors up to 3.4 GHz. The entry-level iMac gains Intel's new Iris Pro integrated graphics. This series of graphics processors are said to offer Intel’s highest graphics capabilities, and Apple claims they will allow for unprecedented levels of integrated graphics performance. Previously the entry level model featured the NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M (as did the high-end 21.5-inch model). If you picked up a new iPhone 5s this weekend or are awaiting one in the mail, you're probably aware of Apple's new Touch ID feature, which is built into the iPhone 5s's Home button. German hackers crack Apple fingerprint technology
It didn't take long for the hacking community to crack Apple's fingerprint recognition system, Touch ID.A German hacking group, Chaos Community Club, announced that they'd managed to fool the fingerprint scanner in the iPhone 5S with techniques generally used to defeat similar technologies in the market.To crack Touch ID, CCC first photographed a fingerprint of a phone's owner using a resolution of 2400 dots per inch. The image was then inverted and laser printed on a transparent sheet with the toner setting set to thick.Next, pink latex milk or white wood glue was smeared into the print of the fingerprint. After the latex or glue dries, it's lifted from the laser print, breathed on to moisten it slightly and placed on the iPhone's fingerprint sensor to unlock the phone."In reality, Apple's sensor has just a higher resolution compared to the sensors so far," a CCC member, Starbug, explained in a statement.

Apple disables in-store pickup option for the iPhone 5s
Apple recently enabled its reservation system for online customers looking to buy an iPhone 5s. Shortly after going live, the company removed this in-store pickup option. Apple's website now says that the iPhone 5s is not eligible for pickup and that all purchases must be made in the store.

As expected, Apple has updated the iMac with fourth generation Intel Haswell quad-core processors up to 3.4 GHz. The entry-level iMac gains Intel's new Iris Pro integrated graphics. Boeing hat einen eigentlich schon ausgemusterten Kampfjet F-16 so umgebaut, dass der Flieger jetzt vom Boden aus ferngesteuert werden kann. Der umgerüstete Jet heißt dann QF-16 und wird von zwei erfahrenen Testpiloten ferngesteuert, was dem Vernehmen nach so gut funktioniert, dass die Drohne nun beim 82nd Aerial Targets Squadron wieder in Dienst gestellt wird. FIFA 14 arrives on iOS, goes freemium
Soccer (or football) fans rejoice. EA Sports has released FIFA 14 for iOS. The app features 33 leagues from the English Premier League to the German Bundesliga battling it out in 34 licensed stadiums, with over 600 licensed teams, and more than a whopping 16,000 players. There are some great features in it too, like Football Club Match Day, which allows you to sync your game to real-world events, including player injuries, suspensions, and team changes. You can, of course, build your own fantasy team, as well as play your friends in multiplayer matches.
Previously, FIFA games on iOS were a paid download, but with FIFA 14, EA has decided to release the game for free with support for in-app purchases.

Apple offers refund to folks who bought Season Pass for 5th season of Breaking Bad
Two weeks ago we reported that a man sued Apple after finding out that the $22.99 he paid for a season pass of Breaking Bad was only good for the final season's first 8 episodes.
In truth, the final season of Breaking Bad is 16 episodes long but was divided up into two installments of 8 episodes as a means to grant the show's creators ample time to map out an exciting and creatively satisfying conclusion for the Emmy award winning series.

Apple erhöht Gewinnaussichten nach guten iPhone-Verkaufszahlen
Basierend auf der erfolgreichen Lancierung des neuen iPhone 5s und iPhone 5c hat Apple gestern der US-Börsenaufsicht SEC mitgeteilt, dass der Umsatz und der Gewinn für das laufende vierte Fiskalquartal 2013 am oberen Ende der zuvor genannten Bandbreite sein wird. Apple erwartete für das Fiskaljahr 2013 bisher einen Gewinn von 34 bis 37 Milliarden US-Dollar und eine Rendite von 36 bis 37 Prozent. Damit erwartet Apple nun einen Gewinn von über 13 Milliarden US-Dollar für das vierte Fiskalquartal, welches am Samstag, 28. September, enden wird.

Apple TV Update 6.0 erneut veröffentlicht
In der Nacht auf heute wurde die sechste Version der Apple TV Software erneut zum Download freigegeben. Das Update mit der Build-Nummer «11A502» bringt unter anderem iTunes Radio und den iTunes Music Store auf den Fernseher. Zusätzlich beinhaltet das Update neue AirPlay-Funktionen. Einen vollständigen Überblick über die neuen Funktionen finden sich in unserem Artikel vom vergangenen Freitag.
Die Aktualisierung kann direkt auf dem Apple-TV-Gerät über die Update-Funktion geladen und installiert werden.
Nachdem Apple am letzten Freitag eine erste Version der Apple TV Software zum Downlaod freigegeben hat, wurde das Update am Montag wieder zurückgezogen. Bei einigen Nutzern führte die neue Software zu Problemen.

Show me the money: Facebook tests new feature to encourage more in-app buying
Facebook is moving ahead with plans to test a new mobile feature to entice more people to buy products while shopping on smaller devices such as iPhones.There will be two partners for the test: Jack Threads, a men's fashion and clothing site; and Mosaic, a site for turning digital photos into a physical book. The feature, "Auto-Fill with Facebook," will roll out starting Monday night to a very small percentage of people using those companies' iOS apps, a Facebook spokeswoman told the IDG News Service.The tool is designed to take some of the complexity out of the checkout process on mobile. If a user already has his or her credit card information on file with Facebook and is shopping within the Jack Threads or the Mosaic app, a button will appear upon checkout asking permission to access the person's payment information on Facebook. Apple TV Firmware 6.0 wieder verfügbar
Nachdem Apple zunächst die neue Firmware für das Apple TV zurückgezogen hat, um einen schwerwiegenden Fehler zu beheben, steht die aktualisierte Version 6.0 (Build 11A502) nun als Download zur Verfügung. Adobe veröffentlicht Premiere und Photoshop Elements 12
Adobe hat in der Nacht auf heute neue Versionen von Photoshop Elements und Premiere Elements auf den Markt gebracht. Mit diesen beiden Programmen verspricht Adobe die Vorteile professioneller Bearbeitungs-Technologie in Kombination mit einer einfachen Bedienung. Neben einigen Verbesserungen wurde bei den beiden Programmen das Hauptaugenmerk auf die Integration mobiler Geräte gelegt. Deshalb wurde auch Adobes Cloud-Speicherdienst «Revel» integriert, womit Nutzer von Photoshop Elements 12 von jedem Gerät aus Zugriff auf ihre Bilder haben sollen.

GTA V: Probleme mit Abstürzen und Hängern
Neben Leistungsproblemen bei vollständiger Installation sorgt GTA V zumindest auf älteren Versionen der Xbox 360 sowie vereinzelt der PlayStation 3 scheinbar auch für Abstürze, die geregeltes Spielen unmöglich machen. Abhilfe scheint nur in einigen Fällen möglich zu sein.

Apple TV Software 6.0 wieder verfügbar
Das Apple-TV-Update auf Version 6.0 ist jetzt wieder verfügbar. Apple hatte die Software aufgrund von Problemberichten vorübergehend zurückgezogen, jetzt lässt sich eine überarbeitete Version über die Systemeinstellungen der Set-Top-Box laden und installieren. Das Update steht übrigens auch für alle Nutzer bereit, die die vorherige Version 6.0 bereits geladen haben.

Adobe has announced the next generation of its consumer photography and video editing apps. The company took the wraps off of Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 and Adobe Premiere Elements 12 tonight. The apps have traditionally been aimed at the "hobbyist" market, and the latest version of each plays the increasing importance of mobile devices for those users, with the advent of mobile integration that makes it easy to wirelessly share your photos and videos between your iPhone and Adobe's desktop apps.

Fixed Apple TV 6.0 Update Reinstated After Being Pulled for Bricking Issues
The Apple TV 6.0 update that Apple pulled over the weekend is now once again available for download. As noted by 9to5Mac, the updated version carries a build number of 11A502, compared to the old 11A470e version, indicating Apple has made some changes to the software. Following the software’s initial Friday release, there were multiple reports that the update caused critical errors for a number of users, necessitating a full iTunes restore. The newly updated software presumably fixes those issues.

Apple releases new build of Apple TV 6.0 software
A day after pulling the Apple TV 6.0 update, Apple has released a new build to the public. The original Apple TV 6.0 that was pulled had the build number of 11A470e. That version proved to provide significant problems for some Apple TV owners, including the loss of content and bricking of their Apple TVs.
The new Apple TV 6.0 update, released tonight, has the build number 11A502, and offers everything the first Apple TV 6.0 update did -- including iTunes Radio, podcast syncing, and AirPlay from iCloud--presumably without the bugs. Users can go into Settings>General>Software Update on their Apple TV's to grab the latest version.

Bartender for Mac updated with support for OS X Mavericks, dynamic menu items
