Elon Musk shows off Iron Man-style rocket design with gestures and 3D printing (video)
Once again confirming Elon Musk is living life a bit differently from most of us, he's just posted a new SpaceX video that's straight out of a sci-fi movie. In it, he demonstrates designing parts for a rocket the company will use with hand gestures, then moving to a 3D projection, free standing glass projection just like Iron Man, and even an implementation with the Oculus Rift headset.

NFL Players Association contracts with Uber to curb drunk driving
In a commendable move, the NFL Players Association is contracting with Uber for the 2013-2014 season in an attempt to keep intoxicated athletes from getting behind the wheel. Vodafone Germany to Discontinue 32/64GB iPhone 5, 16GB iPhone 4S

China Telecom erhält iPhone 5S und iPhone 5C
Eine Meldung auf Weibo durch China Telecom verrät, dass der chinesische Mobilfunkprovider das iPhone 5S und das iPhone 5C in sein Portfolio aufnehmen wird. Über den Microblogging-Service Weibo wurde von China Telecom aus Versehen eine Meldung abgesetzt, die verrät, dass der Mobilfunkanbieter demnächst das iPhone 5S und iPhone 5C anbieten wird. Happy anniversary to the venerable iPod touch
The iPod touch was introduced on this date way back in 2007 at an Apple music event. Steve Jobs gave the keynote address at that event (video below), but it's hard to imagine that the first generation (pictured above) didn't even have a proper speaker. While I wonder if anyone at Apple worried that the iTouch, as some call it, would scuttle iPhone sales, I'd say that hasn't proven to be the case at all.

NTT Docomo soll iPhone bekommen
Nach Jahren zäher Verhandlung soll im Herbst nun endlich NTT Docomo das iPhone in sein Portfolio aufnehmen können. Japans größter Mobilfunkprovider kam bislang ohne Apples iOS-Smartphone aus. Nikkei berichtet, dass Apple und NTT Docomo zu einer Einigung gefunden haben sollen. News: Hard Candy Cases debuts HarvestCraft slider case for 5S, 5C
Hard Candy Cases is the latest company to unveil new cases for Apple’s upcoming iPhones, debuting its HarvestCraft Slider ($40) for iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C. The slider cases come in three different color combinations per base color package.

Hard Candy has a sweet tooth for iPhone 5s and 5c
Yes, you read the headline correctly. Hard Candy Cases has beaten Apple to the punch by sending out a press release for cases for products that don't officially exist at this point. The company is jumping on the hopeful rumor bandwagon by pinging the tech press with word of these cases -- which (conveniently for the manufacturer) aren't available until October 2013.

The pictures may not quite drive the point home, so let us just say that this thing is a beast. And frankly the idea carrying it around using the add-on strip is giving us lower-back pain just thinking of it. But heck, it probably weighs a good deal less that carrying around cart after cart of vinyl -- not to mention a couple of turntables and a whole PA system (not to mention all of those glow sticks). PayPal today announced a major update to its iOS app, introducing a complete iOS 7-style redesign that focuses on mobile payments in physical locations. A new "Shop" tab has been added to allow users to discover nearby restaurants and shops that support payments via PayPal. In a location that offers payments through PayPal, users can check in to pay for merchandise, pay directly at restaurant tables, and place and pay for orders ahead of time to skip lines. Remember the 3Doodler? Odds are plenty of you do, seeing as how the company managed to nab a staggering $2.3 million for its $30,000 Kickstarter campaign. For the minority of you who didn't participate, here's a quick refresher: the device is a 3D printing pen. It's a bit like a hot glue gun for plastic -- simple and ingenuous, it melts a single strand of ABS or PLA, allowing you to draw objects in the air, solidifying as you draw up.

Designed by m's CURB a brilliantly simple idea for cooling a laptop
Here's one of those accessory ideas that you wish you had thought of. Lon Liow of Designed by m was tired of hearing his laptop fan kicking in when he was working on something (not that it would ever happen with a MacBook Pro), and tried a lot of different solutions. The CURB (pre-order price of US$12.99) is essentially a bumper that holds up the laptop in one of two positions and allows a recharging cable to sneak through as well.
The idea is to raise your laptop just enough that air can flow all around it to keep things running cool. It's made of 100 percent food-grade silicone, in case you wish to use it as an eating utensil as well. I suppose you could cut a $1 foam pool noodle to shape to get the same effect,

Eye control is all well and good, but what Haier was really pumped about at this year's IFA was its new 55-inch OLED set. Tipp: Dateien zwingend mit gewünschtem Programm öffnen
Zieht man ein Objekt auf ein Icon im Dock, wird die ausgewählte Datei oder Ordner mit dem entsprechenden Programm geöffnet bzw. weiterverwendet. Dies ist jedoch nur bei Objekten möglich, die vom entsprechenden Programm gelesen werden können. Dabei achtet das gewünschte Programm auf den Datei-Typen — gehört dieser zur eigenen Liste der kompatiblen Typen, dann kann das Objekt wie beschrieben von diesem Programm geöffnet/weiterverwendet werden. Beispielsweise kann ein PDF-Dokument standardmässig zwar vom iWork-App Pages, nicht aber von Numbers geöffnet werden. Derweil kommt es aber auch manchmal vor, dass Programme eine Datei als nicht-lesbar angeben, obwohl es eigentlich geöffnet werden könnte. Man kann Programme aber dazu zwingen, eine nicht erkannte Datei zu öffnen — bzw. zumindest es zu versuchen.

Apple stops Omni Group from offering upgrade pricing for Mac App Store apps
Last week we told you how The Omni Group released OmniKeyMaster, and app that works by searching your Mac for Omni apps from the Mac App Store and then lets you purchase the newest version from the web at upgrade pricing. At the time, I said OmniKeyMaster was a "clever way to get around the fact that the Mac App Store doesn't offer upgrade pricing -- something Apple will hopefully change in the future."

Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro: Hands-On

Das Yoga von Lenovo ist nach wie vor eines der überzeugendsten Beispiele für Hardware, die die neuen, touch-orientierten Features von Windows 8 nutzt. Die Laptop-Tablets entsprechen mittlerweile jedoch nicht mehr dem technischen Stand. Das ändert sich heute mit dem Yoga 2 Pro. Das 13"-Display löst mit 3.200 x 1.800 Pixeln auf und strahlt mit 350 Nit. Auch der Prozessor wurde aktualisiert: Im Inneren arbeite ein Haswell-Chip, auch als i7-Variante. Das Chassis konnte auf 15,5 Millimeter geplättet werden und liegt auch nicht mehr so schwer im Rucksack: 1,39 Kilo ist das Yoga 2 Pro schwer.
PS: Die Tastatur ist nun hintergrundbeleuchtet. Die Auslieferung soll im Oktober beginnen.

Gerüchte: iPad 5 und iPad mini 2 mit A7X diesen Herbst, kostengünstiger iPad mini im 2014
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo hat am Dienstag einen neuen Bericht vorgestellt, in welchem er auf die künftige Entwicklung bei den iPads eingeht. Wie andere Analysten auch ist Ming-Chi Kuo der festen Überzeugung, dass Apple in diesem Herbst eine neue Generation des iPads sowie des iPad mini auf den Markt bringt. Die Produktion der benötigten Komponenten soll bereits begonnen haben, während die Massenproduktion erst für das vierte Quartal erwartet wird.
Gemäss Kuo werden beide Tablets mit einem neuen A7X-Prozessor ausgerüstet sein. Von diesem neuen Prozessor würde vor allem das iPad mini erheblich profitieren. BBC iPlayer for Android finally supports downloads on some ICS, Jelly Bean devices
BBC viewers with Android devices have been left waiting for many features, and until today, one of them was the ability to download shows for offline viewing. Philips intros 65- and 84-inch 4K TVs priced at €4,999 and €14,999
New 4K TVs from Philips? We can't say we didn't see 'em coming. Heck, Philips even won an award for one of them. The company was waiting for the main event here at IFA to make the thing officially official, however. Philips took to the stage today to show off two entries in its 9000 series -- 65- and 84-inch models. The company's promising an "attractive price point here" -- that means €4,999 ($6,588) for the smaller 65PFL9708 and €14,999 ($19,768) for the 84PFL9708. Both sets feature Ultra Pixel HD Engine technology for upscaling, given the still somewhat limited selection of 4K content. The 65 and 84 are both available now in the UK and Russia.

Das Encore ist mit einem 8" großen Display ausgestattet (1.280 x 800p), verfügt über 32 GB Speicher und einen neuen Atom-Prozessor aus Intels Bay Trail Reihe. Das Tablet ist natürlich auf Windows 8.1 vorbereitet, die 2-Megapixel-Kamera auf der Vorderseite ist außerdem für Skype zertifiziert.

Telekom bietet LTE+, Tarife bleiben gleich

Die Telekom lässt uns wissen, dass in über 100 Städten ab sofort LTE+ zur Verfügung steht. Damit sind Download mit theoretisch bis zu 150 Mbit/s bereit. Bis zum Jahresende soll der aufgebohrte Standard auf weitere 100 Städte ausgedehnt werden.

Videos sollen neue iPad-Modelle zeigen
Die Macher von «Unbox Therapy» haben ein neues Video veröffentlicht, in welchem sie ein Front-Panel sowie ein Gehäuse, welche angeblich von der nächsten iPad-Generation stammen, mit den Komponenten des iPad 4 vergleichen.
Gemäss dem Video sollen die Ränder rund um das Display des iPad 5 deutlich schlanker werden als beim iPad 4. Damit würde das iPad, obwohl die Bildschirm-Diagonale identisch bleibt, spürbar schlanker als die Vorgängerversion. Wie beim iPhone sollen die Lautsprecher beim kommenden iPad neben dem Lightning Connector angebracht werden. Zudem wird wohl das Volumen der Lautsprecher vergrössert, was gegenüber der aktuellen iPad-Generation zu einer optimierten Klangausgabe führen soll. Leichte Veränderungen könnte es auch bei den Lautstärkenreglern des iPads geben.

IDC-Prognose: Windows Phone festigt dritten Platz
Laut einer Prognose der IDC wird der boomende Smartphone-Markt 2013 den Gesamtmarkt für Handys um rund 7,3 Prozent auf 1,8 Milliarden Handys anwachsen lassen. Samsung stellte gestern anlässlich der IFA in Berlin wie erwartet neben einem neuen Phabelt und einem neuen Tablet-Computer auch eine Smartwatch vor. Im Vorfeld wurde vermutet, dass Samsung mit der Vorstellung einer Smartwatch Apples spekulierter «iWatch» zurvorkommen möchte.
Samsungs Smartwatch «Galaxy Gear» verfügt über einen 1.63-Zoll kleinen AMOLED-Touchscreen, der mit 320 mal 320 Pixel auflöst. Die intelligente Uhr besitzt integrierte Lautsprecher sowie eine Kamera mit einer Auflösung von 1.9 Megapixeln. Betrieben wird der kleine Computer am Armgelenk mit einem 800 MHz starken Prozessor, welchem 512 MB Arbeitsspeicher zur Verfügung stehen. Die Uhr bietet 4 GB Speicherplatz für Fotos und Videos, Inhalte und Apps. Von Letzteren gibt es laut Samsung bereits deren 70 Stück für die Uhr.

Apple verteilt neunte OS-X-10.8.5-Vorabversion an Entwickler
Apple hat in der Nacht auf heute die neunte Vorabversion von OS X 10.8.5 an registrierte Entwickler verteilt. Diese neunte Beta-Version von OS X 10.8.5 trägt die Build-Nummer 12F36.
In den Release-Notes von Apple werden auch dieses Mal keine bekannten Fehler gelistet. Die neue Vorabversion bringt als wichtigste sichtbare Neuerung ein neues Build von Safari. Die letzte Vorabversion hatte Apple Anfang August verteilt — deren interne Nummer «12F30» ist erneut sehr nahe am neuen Build, was auf ein baldiges Ende des Testzeitraumes hindeuten könnte.
Die Entwickler sollen sich wie bereits bei den vorhergehenden Vorabversionen vor allem auf die Bereiche Wi-Fi und Grafik-Treiber, sowie die PDF-Anzeige, das Aufwachen nach dem Ruhezustand und auf das Management von mobilen Geräten fokussieren.

A7X-Based iPad and iPad Mini Expected to Launch in 4Q 2013, Lower-Cost A6 iPad Mini to Follow in 2014
KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has a fairly solid track record in predicting Apple's product plans, has issued a new research report outlining his expectations for Apple's iPad and iPad mini lineup through the end of 2013 and into 2014. In line with some of his previous predictions and claims from other sources, Apple is planning to release both a fifth-generation iPad and a second-generation iPad mini before the end of this year. Kuo believes that both devices will run on a new A7X chip, with the new iPad mini seeing a significant processor upgrade from the A5 found in the current model to help support a Retina display in the forthcoming model. For both the new iPad and iPad mini models, Kuo sees component shipments ramping up through the end of this quarter, with mass production gearing up in the fourth quarter of the year, in line with previous expectations for a fall launch.

The smartwatch market is a weird one, so when a new device enters the fray it can be somewhat confusing to pinpoint exactly where it fits in. Samsung jumped in today with the reveal of the Galaxy Gear, a $299 smartwatch that, at launch, will work with exactly one smartphone, the Galaxy Note 3.
Unless you're planning on dropping the cash to upgrade your handset to the as-of-yet unreleased new Note, there's no reason to really consider the Galaxy Gear in the first place. Apple has asked developers to prepare for Safari Push Notifications, a new feature included in OS X Mavericks, according to Cult of Mac. Safari Push Notifications allow websites to send push notifications to website users even when Safari is not running. Apple emailing developers to get ready for Safari notifications in Mavericks
Apple sent an email to members of its developer program today prompting them to add push notification capabilities to their websites. Push notification support is one of the many new features in Safari on OS X Mavericks, and allows web publishers to send native push notifications through Apple’s notification service even when Safari isn’t running.

CanOpener is an excellent app for listening with headphones on iOS

CanOpener is a U.S. $4.99 universal app with an extensive feature set. A Crossfeed feature lets your headphones sound a bit more like speakers, by blending the separation in adjustable amounts. An equalizer gives you a large range of settings to fit the music to your preferences, and a Dosimeter lets you know how loud the audio is to protect your hearing.

Apple posts job listings for iAd team positions in advance of iTunes Radio
With the impending release of iTunes Radio, Apple is preparing for its entry into the world of streaming music by expanding its iAd devision. Apple currently has three positions open on their official jobs board for the iAd devision, all in the design field.

Apple Prevents Omni Group From Offering Discounted Mac App Store Upgrades
Last week, The Omni Group released a program called OmniKeyMaster that would allow users who purchased older Mac App Store versions of the company's software to purchase discounted upgrades in the future, directly from the company. Today, the company said it would be unable to offer upgrades to Mac App Store customers because of Apple's App Store policies. Video Compares Second-Generation iPad Mini Shell to iPad 5, Current Mini
A new video comparing the purported shell of the second-generation iPad mini to the existing iPad mini and the upcoming fifth-generation iPad has surfaced on YouTube. Shared by Unbox Therapy, the shell, which has been previously seen in photos, has a form factor that is nearly identical to the existing iPad mini.
