First OS X 10.8.5 beta seeds to developers
Apple has begun seeding the first beta of OS X 10.8.5 to developers. The initial release is listed as build 12F9, and like v10.8.4 concentrates on bugfixes instead of new features. Developers are asked to test graphics, Wi-Fi, PDF viewing, and wake-from-sleep functions.

Texas firm sues Apple over iPhone's call forwarding features
A Texas company, Bluebonnet Telecommunications, is suing Apple for patent infringement in relation to call forwarding technology. Specifically Bluebonnet says that the iPhone 4S and 5 violate US Patent No. 5,485,511, a patent that previously belonged to Siemens Rolm Communications but was picked up by Bluebonnet in June 1996. The patent describes a phone communicating with a central switch to generate a list of options, which are then displayed for the phone's user.

Microsoft reportedly neared deal for Nokia's device business, but talks broke down
It's often been rumored that Microsoft had an eye on Nokia's handset business. It made perfect sense for both companies -- one a struggling pioneer of the mobile industry and the other a struggling stalwart from the first wave of smartphones. According to the Wall Street Journal's sources, the two were actually quite close to striking a deal and were having "advanced talks" in London as recently as this month. Stratasys to acquire 3D printing company MakerBot
Stratasys, an Israeli-based 3D printer and additive manufacturer has just agreed to acquire 3D printing company MakerBot. They've announced a "definitive merger agreement" where MakerBot would merge with a subsdiary of Stratasys in a "stock-for-stock transaction." After selling more than 22,000 3D printers since its inception in 2009, MakerBot is seen as a leader and pioneer in the 3D printing space.

OS X 10.8.5 Beta an Entwickler ausgeteilt
Apple hat heute eine Pre-release-Beta-Version von OS X 10.8.5 an seine Entwickler ausgeteilt. Der Download des Updates für Mountain Lion ist für angemeldete Entwickler über den Mac App Store verfügbar. Seit heute können Apple-Entwickler OS X 10.8.5 in einer Pre-release-Version herunterladen. Microsoft reportedly reverses Xbox One DRM policy, kills required online check-in and used game complications
Microsoft's next game console, the Xbox One, is perhaps best known for its complex used game system and once-per-24-hour online check-in requirement. Asymco's Horace Dediu measures the iTunes video store
The iTunes video store is a strange market to track. Most of Apple's attention and press these days is going to the App Store, and obviously iTunes wouldn't exist without the music store. But the video store, where you can buy and rent movies and TV shows, is sort of the quiet third pillar of Apple's digital retail service. And Horace Dediu of Asymco has posted that it's doing big numbers indeed. After Apple announced new numbers for both TV show and movie downloads (1 billion and 380 million), Dediu crunched the numbers, and determined that the rate of spending on iTunes video is about $1.75 billion per year.

Microsoft demos real-time co-authoring for Office web apps
With Microsoft's Build developer conference kicking off in just a week, we're frankly surprised the company is choosing to release any news ahead of time. Researchers crack auto-generated iOS hotspot passwords in 60 seconds
The auto-generated passwords for iOS Personal Hotspots can be cracked in under a minute, a group of German researchers claim. In a paper (PDF) out of the University of Erlangen, the people explain that iOS generates passwords based on word list of about 52,500 entries, but only relies on 1,842. The word selection process is moreover said to be insufficiently random, making it easy to brute-force an attack.

WWDC Redux: Don't Worry, Be Happy
Let's say you go to a restaurant almost every day for years. It's your favorite restaurant, and you've practically memorized the menu. The staff knows you, your favorite dishes and you know a little about the chef. Then one day you walk in and everything has changed. The menu looks weird, there's a bunch of new dishes and the staff is a little distracted-- but the food is amazing. Everything else is throwing you off but you cannot deny that the food is better. University of Tokyo's fast-tracking camera system could revolutionize sports coverage (video)
Researchers at the University of Tokyo's Ishikawa Oku Lab have been hard at work on a camera system that can track fast moving objects incredibly well, and the technology may change the way sports like baseball and soccer are televised. Recently, the team building the system has entered the next phase of testing: taking it outside, to see if will perform as well as it has in a lab setting. If all goes according to plan, they expect it'll be ready for broadcast use in roughly two years.

Analyst Flip-Flops Again: Thinner iPad Mini in Late 2013, Retina Display in Early 2014

Parallels Desktop 8 for Mac updates with early OS X Mavericks support
Parallels Desktop 8 for Mac has been updated with support for the OS X Mavericks beta. The new Desktop build, 8.0.18494, lets users run Mavericks virtualized within another copy of OS X. Parallels classifies its Mavericks support as "experimental" however, and notes that since the OS is still unreleased, people must be registered Apple developers to make use of the feature.

Dev Juice: Parallels Desktop 8 update makes OS X Mavericks VMs, hosts possible
Just last week I was bemoaning the fact that neither Parallels nor VMWare Fusion provided an easy way for a developer to create a virtual machine (VM) for testing of OS X Mavericks, so I ended up installing the new Mac operating system on a separate partition. Today Parallels released an update to Parallels Desktop 8 for Mac that not only allows the update of existing OS X VMs to OS X Mavericks, but also allows Mavericks to be a host machine for Parallels.
If there's a downside, it's that you still can't install OS X Mavericks on a blank VM; instead, you'll have to install a previous

Facebook comments get image embeds, give online flame warriors graphical ammo
Facebook comment threads are apparently a bit too calm, so the social network company's decided to mix things up with the addition of in-line image embeds starting today. But wait -- put down the link to your hottest GIF -- apparently the service only supports static images for now. And not everyone has it thus far, with the service only rolling out to folks who have a camera icon appear in the comment response field.
The functionality is rolling out on both web and mobile versions of Facebook; product engineer Bob Baldwin debuted the addition on his Facebook profile, where he said he built the image embedding "at a hackathon" with a gaggle of other FBers. Avengers Alliance out now on iOS, Where's My Mickey coming tomorrow
Disney's got two big releases arriving on the App Store last week and this week, one we've been waiting on for a while, and another that combines one of the company's oldest properties with one of the newest.
The first is Avengers Alliance, which is now out and available on the App Store as a free download. This game started off on Facebook, and it's still incredibly popular over there (or at least I assume it is, given all of the references and requests from it in my feed). Apple wins $30M iPad contract with LA Unified School District
Apple has won a $30 million contract to provide iPads to every student in the Los Angeles Unified School District, the LA Times reports. The Board of Education voted 6-0 in favor after hearing senior staff claim that the iPad was both the best and least expensive option for meeting the District's specifications. The tablet "received the highest scoring by the students and the teachers," according to Deputy Superintendent Jaime Aquino. Apple providing iPads to Los Angeles school district in $30 million contract
Apple won a contract this week with the Los Angeles Unified School District to provide iPads to its students, netting Cupertino $30 million across the next two years. The agreement will roll out iPads to students at 47 campuses; the iPads cost $678 apiece (nearly $200 more than a standard entry level iPad) and come loaded with unnamed educational software. A new listing for a rare Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh has appeared on eBay. Recognized as the first major design project for Jonathan Ive, the TAM was introduced as a limited production in the spring of 1997. Only 12,000 machines were ever produced, and 399 of those were kept by apple to be used as spare parts. The system comes in all of its original packaging and includes all of the accessories that came with the system when it was shipped. Researchers Crack iOS-Generated Hotspot Passwords in 50 Seconds
When tethering an iPhone or an iPad, iOS users have the option of using an automatically generated password for their personal hotspots, which Apple implemented to provide all users with a secure password option. Los Angeles schools award $30 million iPad contract to Apple
The Los Angeles Unified School District is redirecting US$30 million of its budget to provide roughly 35,000 iPads to 47 district schools, the Los Angeles Times reports. Because the devices will come pre-loaded with educational software, the price per unit clocks in at a hefty $678. LAUSD is the nation's second-largest school district with nearly 695,000 students as of data released in 2009, only surpassed by the New York City Department of Education with more than 1 million students.

Apple announced today that HBO GO and WatchESPN are now available on the Apple TV. Eddy Cue, Apple senior vice president of Internet Software and Services said that "HBO GO and WatchESPN are some of the most popular iOS apps and are sure to be huge hits on Apple TV."
The two new content providers are joined by Sky News, Crunchyroll, and Qello. Sky News on Apple TV will deliver 24/7 news to viewers in the US, UK and Ireland. Crunchyroll is a Japanese Anime and Asian media provider, and will let subscribers view the latest HD shows one hour after airing in Japan.

Researchers easily crack iOS-generated hotspot passwords
When you enable the Personal Hotspot feature on your iPhone, iOS will generate a password on your behalf. It's convenient, but recent research from FAU in Germany suggests it is not very secure.
According to researchers Andreas Kurtz, Felix Freiling, and Daniel Metz, the default Hotspot password uses a short english word with some random numbers at the end. Not surprisingly, these passwords can be cracked in no time via a brute force dictionary attack. Using one AMD Radeon HD 6990 GPU, the team was able to guess a password in 50 minutes. When they bumped the GPUs up to four AMD Radeon HD 7970s, they were able to drop the password cracking

LinkedIn integration could be coming to iOS 7, code shows
Apple is considering LinkedIn integration for iOS 7, beta code references suggest. In particular the references hint that LinkedIn could be supported in the same manner as Facebook and Twitter, meaning single sign-in support, and the ability to quickly post content via a share sheet or hooks in iOS apps. LG Hamburg erklärt jDownloader 2 für illegal
Das Landgericht Hamburg hat die Software jDownloader 2 für verboten erklärt. Mit dem plattformunabhängigen Programm sei es möglich, geschützte Streaminginhalte herunterzuladen. Damit werde eine “wirksame technische Maßnahme” umgangen, was nach § 95a UrhG verboten ist. Gegen die Software hatte MyVideo.de geklagt, ein Tochterunternehmen von ProSiebenSat.1. Ganz so endgültig sei das Verbot aber noch nicht. Zunächst ist es nur eine Entscheidung in einem laufenden Verfahren. Darin soll eine einstweilige Verfügung erwirkt werden. Laut Rechtsanwalt Thomas Stadler müsse man jedoch davon ausgehen, dass andere Gerichte die Sachlage ähnlich einschätzen werden. 'Max Payne 3' coming to the Mac on June 20
Rockstar Games has announced that it is bringing its popular console and PC title 'Mac Payne 3' to the Mac on Thursday. Rockstar has yet to release its pricing, only stating that the Mac version of the game supports "a number of advanced graphics options, scalable high-resolution textures and character models, DirectX11 features, multi-monitor support and 3D."
As far as what users need to run the game, Rockstar recommends the following:

Zeigen Bilder das Gehäuse des iPhone 5S?
Der Blog «FanaticFone» hat im Verlaufe des gestrigen Tages Bilder publiziert, welche angeblich das Gehäuse und das Display des kommenden iPhones zeigen sollen. Das angebliche Gehäuse des kommenden iPhones wird mit dem Gehäuse des iPhone 5 verglichen. Anscheinend hatte der Autor selbst die Gelegenheit, die beiden Geräte miteinander zu vergleichen.
Die Bilder zeigen keine grossen Veränderungen am Display und an der Frontpartie. Die einzige offensichtliche Veränderungen zwischen den beiden Geräten ist die Länge des Kabels, welches das Display mit dem Logic Board verbindet. Möglicherweise hat es Änderungen bei der Anordnungen der internen Komponenten gegeben, welche eine andere Kabelführung notwendig machten.
Bei den übrigen Veränderungen handelt es sich gemäss den Beschreibungen des Autors um Detail-Verbesserungen — so soll die Frontpartie am oberen Ende etwas dicker sein als beim iPhone 5 un

Facebook has updated its iOS app, adding new status icons and new privacy features. The version 6.2 update follows updates made to the web version of Facebook, especially regarding the all-important privacy status. Now after a user has posted a status update, photo or a link, they can tap a drop-down arrow next to the update and change the privacy settings. Users can change the privacy settings for older posts as well.

Researchers able to predict iOS-generated hotspot passwords, takes under a minute
Anyone who's tried to tether to their iPhone or iPad will recall how iOS manages to craft its own passwords when used as a personal hotspot. The aim is to ensure that anyone sharing their data connection will get some degree of security, regardless of whether they tinker with the password themselves. Öffentliche Ladestationen für Smartphones und Tablets in New York City
Der US-Mobilfunkanbieter AT&T hat in New York City damit begonnen, öffentliche Ladestationen für Smartphones und Tablets zur Verfügung zu stellen. Zu den aktuell vier Ladestation, welche im gesamten Stadtgebiet verteilt sind, sollen bis zum Ende des Sommers noch weitere 21 Stationen hinzukommen.
Jede dieser Ladestationen verfügt über drei Solar-Panels, welche die Station mit «sauberem» Strom versorgen. An jeder Station befinden sich mehrere USB-Anschlüsse und Adapter, mit welchen die Geräte geladen werden können. Ebenfalls vorhanden sind Adapter für den «Lightning»-Anschluss und den «Dock Connector» von Apple. Damit man auch nach Sonnenuntergang den Akku des Smartphones oder Tablets laden kann, verfügt jede der Stationen über einen eingebauten Akku.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MDP Benchmarks: Ein Sprung nach vorne

Security software company Cloudmark has made a version of its award-winning anti-spam software available for Mac users in both a free and paid version. Die Macher der Webseite «Kotaku» wollen aus einer ungenannten Quelle die Bestätigung erhalten haben, dass bereits in diesem Jahr die ersten Spiele-Controller, welche speziell für iOS-Geräte entwickelt worden sind, auf den Markt kommen werden.
Als Beweis für diese Behauptung wurde Kotaku ein Bild zur Verfügung gestellt, welches einen ersten Prototypen eines Spiele-Controllers zeigen soll. Dabei handelt es sich angeblich um ein Gerät, welches von Logitech entwickelt worden ist. Der Controller gleicht der Abbildung eines Controllers, welcher anlässlich einer WWDC Session gezeigt worden ist.

OS X Mavericks: Apple-Mitarbeiter können Beta ausprobieren
Die Möglichkeit die Beta von Mac OS X 10.9 mit dem Codenamen Mavericks zu testen, steht nun allen Apple-Mitarbeitern im Einzelhandel frei. Apple erlaubt, wie schon in vielen Fällen zuvor, den Mitarbeitern den Test des neuen Betriebssystems. Die Möglichkeit besteht, ist aber nicht verpflichtend. Wer gerne OS X Mavericks testen mag und Apple Feedback zum neuen System geben möchte, kann dies tun, wird aber nicht dazu gezwungen. Am gestrigen Nachmittag hat Huawei in London das außerordentlich schlanke Ascend P6 vorgestellt. Mit 6,18 mm ist es laut Huawei das aktuell dünnste Smartphone der Welt. iOS-7-Icons: Ehemaliger Apple-Designer macht Vorschlag
Louie Mantia hat einen Vorschlag für iOS-7-Icons unterbreitet. PS3 users report 4.45 update locks up systems, may be tied to large HDDs
Planning on turning on your PS3 for some The Last of Us action tonight? According to a thread on the PlayStation Support forums, if you're prompted to install the latest firmware update version 4.45 then you may want to hold of for now. A number of owners are reporting their systems locks up while booting, although the problem may only affect users with hard drives installed that are 500GBs or larger. According to the changelog, it was supposed to allow users to select whether or not they want an in-game notification when a trophy is earned. In apparent response to a question that compared the computer and Internet revolution of the 80s and 90s to a new Renaissance, a never-publicly-seen video of Steve Jobs in 1994 -- while he was still with NeXT -- sees the bearded and reflective Apple co-founder commenting on his likely legacy and the place of the industry he helped create. iOS 7: LinkedIn-Integration offenbar geplant
In iOS 7 gibt es bereits Hinweise im Quellcode, die auf eine Integration von LinkedIn auf iPhone und iPad schließen lassen könnten, ähnlich wie Nutzer es bei Twitter und Facebook unter iOS 6 bereits kennen. In der aktuellen, ersten Beta-Version ist das Feature noch nicht in die Benutzeroberfläche eingebaut. Im Quellcode von iOS 7 gibt es Hinweise auf die Integration von LinkedIn in Apples mobilem Betriebssystem. Siri-Update für iPhone und iPad zum Umgang mit Suizidgefährdeten
Apple hat Siris Reaktion auf Personen verbessert, die gegenüber dem Sprachassistenten auf dem iPhone, iPod touch oder iPad Selbstmordgedanken äußern. Social network Facebook has updated its iOS app to v6.2, which brings new access to change who can see something a user has shared, the ability to start a conversation based on photos users receive in messages, and the addition of icons to status updates that show emotions or what a user is reading or watching. The "status update icons" were added to the desktop version of the program in April, but mobile support has been missing until now. The update also includes the usual bug fixes, and the app can be downloaded for free from the App Store.

Square Enix uses your face for action in Bloodmasque
Square Enix's Bloodmasque was undoubtedly the strangest game I saw at E3 last week, and in a year defined by indie titles and two new HD consoles, I think that's saying something. Square Enix has had a weird time with the App Store -- other companies like Capcom and EA have found a lot of success in smaller titles, but Square Enix has clung to its own console traditions, releasing relatively large and high quality, high production titles for a relatively high cost. Bloodmasque follows this trend (though the price has yet to be announced just yet), and it also brings one weird little twist that was actually more charming than I expected.

Dish doesn't submit another bid to buy Sprint, will 'consider its options'
The latest move in the standoff between Softbank, Sprint, Dish Network and Clearwire has been made, as Dish stated today it will not submit another bid for Sprint. This comes after Sprint sued to stop Dish from buying Clearwire, which the satellite company called an attempt to deflect attention from its own unfair dealings. If you'll recall, Dish Network jumped in with a $25.5 billion offer to buy Sprint, but after Japanese carrier Softbank improved its proposal slightly, Sprint put Dish on a deadline to respond. New Video May Show iOS 7 Running on an iPad
Apple has yet to release iOS 7 for the iPad, which has led to speculation about what the operating system will look like on a larger screen. Over the weekend, photos from the iOS 7 simulator in Xcode 5 surfaced, demonstrating how several stock iOS apps might look on Apple's tablet, and now a tipster has directed us to Russia-based YouTube user Rozetked, who has released a video of what he claims is iOS 7 "alpha" running on an iPad. Apple issues major update to iOS mass-deployment tool Configurator
Apple has updated its iOS mass-deployment configuration and management tool, Configurator, to version 1.3. The free app works with iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices, and now offers "significantly improved" reliability, scalability and performance, the ability to cancel scheduled or even in-progress operations, and more. There is a new status view that includes time estimates and error information with recovery suggestions, and administrators can now install apps on devices configured to not allow users to install apps.

Testing the pros and cons of Mavericks' multi-display support
While Mavericks won't be officially released for a few months, developers already have their hands on the beta, and are putting the operating system to the test. One intrepid YouTube user, MrThaiBox123, has uploaded a video showcasing the strengths and weaknesses of the system's multi-monitor abilities. And he's done this with six 27-inch monitors. You know, just like your average work space.
It's important to note that the issues MrThaiBox123 deals with could all be fixed by the public release this fall. Still this is a fascinating look at both the upcoming operating system and the troubleshooting that comes with beta testing.
