iOS games spending overtakes dedicated games
App analytics firm App Annie has released a new report about portable gaming, and announced that iOS gamers are now spending more money on Apple's platform than on traditional handheld titles. The light blue above is last year's fourth quarter, the dark blue is this year's first quarter, and as you can see, both iOS and Google Play spending is up, and has actually topped spending on traditional handheld devices like the Nintendo 3DS and the PS Vita.

Macworld blogger Steven Aquino wrote a fascinating piece today on how Apple's Retina display technology has helped him -- a legally blind individual with extremely low vision -- to be able to enjoy Apple's products as if he had no vision limitations at all.

News: Cook talks Apple’s taxes ahead of Senate testimony
Apple CEO Tim Cook has spoken out on the company’s tax practices prior to his scheduled testimony at a Senate hearing next Tuesday. News: Moshi debuts aluminum USB Cable with Lightning Connector
Moshi has released its USB Cable with Lightning Connector ($20). While it’s not terribly different in price or size from Apple’s official Lightning to USB Cable, this one-meter Lightning cable uses fancy aluminum plug jackets rather than the plastic ones favored by Apple.

Apple's first $3.05 quarterly dividend payout scheduled for tomorrow
Back in April, Apple gave shareholders yearning for a bigger cut of Apple's profits something to be happy about. Specifically, Apple a few weeks ago announced that it was upping its quarterly dividend by 15%, raising it from $2.65 a share to $3.05 a share.
Apple's first dividend payment under the increased amount is scheduled to go down tomorrow. Shareholders with shares that were purchased on or before May 9, 2013 will be eligible for the increased quarterly dividend.
Since Apple first announced its increased quarterly dividend, along with a massive increase to its stock repurchasing plan, shares of the company have gone up by 7%.

New OS X 'KitM.A' malware discovered, mostly impotent
A new semi-functional malware has been found for OSX. Discovered on a computer at the Oslo Freedom Forum by researcher Jacob Appelbaum, the OSX/KitM.A is a backdoor application which launches on boot and captures screenshots on a regular basis, which are then dumped in a folder.

Latest Apple dividend payment distributes over $2.8B to shareholders
Apple is today paying out its latest dividend to shareholders. The amount is rated at $3.05 per share, translating into a total of about $2.867 billion for all of the company's 940 million outstanding shares. To be eligible for the dividend, a person must have been a shareholder by May 13th; because qualifying purchases must be settled though, realistically, any stock must have been bought no later than the 8th.

Dell announces Q1 2014 results: $14 billion revenue, 21 cents EPS
We doubt recent earnings reports at Dell have been met with balloons on the quad and sheet cake in the cafe. And that's likely the case this time around as well. Pebble receives $15 mil in funding, releases SDK and Sports API
The company behind the Pebble smartwatch, which not only looks awesome but connects up to your iPhone, has picked up $15 million in funding from venture capitalists, and has released yet another version of its SDK. The funding is obviously a solid chunk of change, and should help Pebble not only fulfill its current orders (the company is still aiming to get watches out to all of its supporters from a successful Kickstarter bid), but push the company on into the future as well.

MacBook Air Flash Storage Firmware Update 1.0 fixes severe crash bug
Apple has posted a new support download for mid-2012 MacBook Airs, MacBook Air Flash Storage Firmware Update 1.0. Unusually, Apple states that the patch is mandatory; it fixes a problem with the Air's firmware that can, potentially, prevent a computer from recovering from a crash. The file is a 1.69MB download, and requires either OS X 10.7.5 or 10.8.3.

News: iLuv intros Aud 5 Lightning speaker dock for iPhone 5
Following an announcement earlier this year, iLuv has released Aud 5 ($150), a Lightning speaker dock for iPhone 5. Aud 5 features both full-range speakers and a passive radiator for bass. An iPhone 5 can be charged while docked in the center of the speaker on a pivoting Lightning connector.

Google Hangouts app to integrate SMS "soon"
I've been using the Google Hangouts app on the iPhone since it was announced on Wednesday, and I've really liked it so far. I haven't messed around with it much on my iPad, except to install it, but it was enough for my Android-using husband to be jealous that we got it first.
Like Apple's Messages, it's pushing conversations to my iPhone when I'm not at my computer, a feature which I've grown to love in iOS and OS X. The Hangouts app has a great feature to snooze notifications, which is great if you're going to be at the computer for awhile and don't want the iOS app constantly alerting you to new messages. Apple updates iTunes to 11.0.3, improves Songs view, MiniPlayer
On Thursday, Apple updated its flagship program iTunes to version 11.0.3, which brings some new features as well as addresses a number of minor bugs and improves security and performance for those running and sorting large collections. The main new features include a redesigned MiniPlayer that now features artwork and a progress bar, and some changes to the Songs view that also adds album artwork. Importantly, multi-disc albums are now seen and counted as one album rather than individual discs.

Pebble gains $15M funding, updates SDK with two-way communication
Pebble, the smartwatch that started life on Kickstarter, has received an extra $15 million in funding. The additional funding from investors, on top of the $10.2 million received through its Kickstarter campaign, comes at the same time as the company updates its SDK to include two-way communication for third-party Pebble apps.

King claims 70 million daily active players, Pet Rescue Saga coming soon to mobile
King, which used to be called King.com it pulled a namechange at GDC this year, has announced that it has 70 million daily active players, which is a crazy number. By far, King's biggest title is Candy Crush Saga. The company notes that the game has 15.5 million active players on Facebook every day. Candy Crush Saga is also a big hit on iOS, where it consistently appears in the top charts for both most downloaded and top grossing.

Apple to re-locate flagship store in San Francisco
Attendees of Macworld/iWorld and WWDC have always known that if they need an Apple fix during their conference stay, they can walk over to the Apple Store at the corner of Stockton and Ellis streets. The SFGate blog is reporting that the company has submitted plans to open a new flagship store on Union Square a few blocks away.
The new store is expected to occupy a space at Stockton and Post streets that was previously the home of a Levi's store. The design of the new building is intriguing -- it's a silver box-shaped store with an all-glass front, with the iconic Apple logo seemingly floating in midair.

Newly Discovered Mac Malware Captures and Stores Screenshots
New Mac spyware was discovered earlier this week on a computer at the Oslo Freedom Forum, an annual human rights conference. Located by computer security researcher Jacob Appelbaum, the malware, which has been deemed OSX/KitM.A, is currently being investigated by anti-virus company F-Secure, reports CNET. The malware is a backdoor application called "macs.app," which launches automatically upon login and captures screenshots that it then sends to a MacApp folder in the user's home directory. Two command-and-control servers, located at securitytable.org and docsforum.info, are associated with the malware, but one does not function and the other gives a "public access forbidden" message.

Smartphone-Weltmarkt: iOS fällt weit hinter Android zurück
Auf dem weltweiten Smartphone-Markt dominieren weiterhin Apples iOS und Googles Android – allerdings ist Apple im ersten Quartal 2013 weit zurückgefallen. Ein großes Wachstum gab es für Microsofts Windows Phone.
Die Marktforscher von IDC haben die Verkaufszahlen unterschiedlicher Smartphones mit verschiedenen Betriebssystemen zusammengestellt. Über 90 Prozent machen das iOS und Android unter sich aus, im Vorjahresquartal waren es noch knapp über 80 Prozent. Allerdings ist Apples Marktanteil deutlich zurückgegangen.

Preview, sips, and more: OS X image processing tools
On a recent trip, I found I had failed to add copies of my auto-resizing drop tools to my travel MacBook Air. My droplets allow me to convert images to TUAW-standard sizes, namely 225 pixels for small images and 456 pixels for banner images. (See? Information you never thought you'd need to know.)
What a lot of people don't realize is that OS X offers solutions for these kinds of basic image tasks.
First and foremost is Preview. This app is simply terrific. Yes, I know, Apple took some really helpful utilities like Link Annotation out of the app on its road to Mountain Lion. (Time? Feature trimming? It's hard to say.) Even so, Preview is the best app on your comp

iTunes 11.0.3 released with enhanced MiniPlayer, multi-disc albums
Cutting through all the Google I/O news is this update from Apple: today, Cupertino released iTunes version 11.0.3. This isn't just an incremental refresh, as several new features are on board, including an improved Songs View and the ability to view multi-disc albums as a single album. The update also brings enhancements to the MiniPlayer, such as a new album artwork view and a progress bar. iTunes 11.0.3 now available
Check Software Update, because Apple has released iTunes 11.0.3. This update offers a few new features, including a new MiniPlayer that highlights album artwork and has a built-in progress bar. That should make many people happy.
Also, iTunes 11.0.3 has improved the songs view and has support for multi-disc albums, in that they now appear as a single album, which is great.

Apple moving flagship SF store, doubling size
The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that Apple will be eventually closing its One Stockton Street store -- which has been a flagship venue among the San Francisco stores -- and moving it about three blocks away, adjacent to Union Square. The new store will feature an updated design with a more glass-centric design, somewhat reminiscent of the Upper West Side store in New York City. It will also be about 45 percent larger than the current location and increase its staff from 350 to 400.

iPhone cameras are everywhere at one of America's best scenic spots
My last visit to Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah was in pre-iPhone days. My, how things have changed. I went to Bryce on a landscape shoot this week with my usual semi-pro equipment: Canon 5D, Manfrotto tripod and the usual gaggle of batteries, timers and other esoterica.
I was especially interested in seeing if people were toting different equipment in the age of the smartphone. I expected to see Android and iPhones snapping away, while the pros and semi-pros were hanging on to their expensive DSLRs.

Android and iOS Continue to Dominate Smartphone Market as Windows Phone Shows Signs of Life
Following up on its April report breaking down mobile phone shipments by manufacturer for the first quarter of 2013, research firm IDC today issued a new report looking at shipments from an operating system perspective. A new study by mobile advertising analysts Millennial Media finds that Apple's iOS is again the dominant platform for ad impressions, a measure of the effectiveness and engagement with in-app advertising. The report found growth in ad impressions across platforms and manufacturers, apart from BlackBerry which continued to shed users. Parenting tip: Recover your lost parental control password, or not
Parental Controls on iOS are extremely helpful for parents of iOS-device-using kids. They allow a parent to block in-app purchases, restrict explicit content on the device and block apps that are not needed for younger children (Mail, Safari, etc.).
Setting up these restrictions requires a special 4-digit PIN that only needs to be entered when a parent makes changes to the parental control settings. Because the code is entered so infrequently, it is easy to forget the password, especially if you set up restrictions in haste and don't take the time to record the code in your favorite password keeper. Apple to Relocate Flagship San Francisco Retail Store to Union Square
Apple's San Francisco flagship retail store has been a particularly high-profile location for the company since it opened nine years ago, but the San Francisco Chronicle reports that Apple has submitted plans to move the store to a new location three blocks away. The new location at Stockton and Post streets will be directly adjacent to Union Square, the focal point of San Francisco's high-end shopping district.Supervisor David Chiu said he hoped the new silver box-shaped computer store and customer service center would “turbo-charge” the Union Square area, which has long been home to many of the city’s high-end retailers. Irish government seeks emergency power to cut mobile services during G8 summit
The Irish Defence Minister, Alan Shatter, has put forward a law that would give his government the right to cut off mobile services "in a limited area" to prevent a bombing. In particular, he fears that militant groups may attack next month's G8 summit in Northern Ireland to "garner publicity," and that they may try to detonate explosives remotely using phone signals. NHK has a theoretical fix for OLED's theoretical longevity problem
Japan's National Broadcasting Corporation, NHK, reckons OLED displays don't last long enough. And they have a point, because OLED pixels that are exposed to the air can lose half of their brightness in just 100 days. Apple sucht Liquidmetal-Experten
Neben neuen Mitarbeitern für iWorks sucht Apple seit kurzem mit einer Stellenanzeige auch nach einem Experten im Umgang mit Liquidmetal.
Als wichtigste Anforderungen für den neuen Mitarbeiter nennt Apple Kenntnisse im Umgang mit CNC-Färsen, Spritzgussmaschinen und anderen Maschinen. Genau diese Maschinen werden benötigt, um die Legierung Liquidmetal in Form zu bringen. Die Stellenanzeige steht im Zusammenhang mit dem iPad, womit die Möglichkeit besteht, dass bei einem künftigen iPad das Material zum Einsatz kommen könnte.

Siebte OS X 10.8.4 Vorabversion an Entwickler verteilt
Eine Woche nach der Veröffentlichung der fünften Beta von OS X 10.8.4 veröffentlichte Apple am gestrigen Abend eine weitere Vorabversion des nächsten OS X Minor-Updates. Registrierte Entwickler können die Beta mit der Build-Nummer «12E52» über das Mac-Developer-Portal herunterladen.
Wie bei den vorhergehenden Vorabversionen auch sollen sich die Entwickler beim Testen des neuen Systems primär auf Safari, Wi-Fi und die Grafik-Treiber konzentrieren. Neue Probleme wurden keine bekannt.

Apples in iOS 6 eingeführte neue Karten-App hatte einen harzigen Start. Auch ein halbes Jahr nach dessen Einführung kommt das Kartenmaterial noch nicht an jenes der altgedienten Google Maps heran. Apple arbeitet stetig an der Verbesserung der Karten, durch einen kleinen Trick kann man aber auch selbst einen Mehrwert aus den Karten holen: Wer unter Einstellungen : Karten die «Etikettgrösse» auf «Klein» stellt, erhält in den Karten auch kleinere Strassennamen — damit haben mehr Bezeichnungen auf dem aktiven Karten-Ausschnitt Platz, was wiederum zu einer vollständigeren, nützlicheren Karte führt.

Tipp: Übersicht / Quick Look auch im Dock nutzen («Gitter» und «Fächer»)
Die OS-X-Funktion «Übersicht» bzw. «Quick Look» funktioniert nicht nur im Finder, sondern auch an diversen anderern Orten an denen mit Dokumenten und Verzeichnissen gearbeitet wird. Dazu gehört auch das Dock.
Werden Ordner in der rechten Seite des Docks abgelegt, können die Inhalte dieser in drei verschiedenen Ansichten durchforstet oder geöffnet werden. Werden die Ansichten «Gitter» oder «Fächer» für die Anzeige der Inhalte ausgewählt (über das Dock-Kontext-Menü zum jeweiligen Ordner), kann Übersicht auf die Inhalte des Ordners angewendet werden. Quick Look zeigt dabei jeweils jenes Objekt an, über welchem sich der Mauszeiger gerade befindet.

Apple verzeichnet 50 Milliarden App-Downloads
In der Nacht auf heute erreichte Apple mit dem iOS App Store einen weiteren Meilenstein: Seit dem Start des App Stores im Jahr 2008 wurden über 50 Milliarden Programme heruntergeladen. Derjenige Nutzer, welcher den 50 Milliardsten App-Download getätigt hat, wird (wie bei vergangenen Countdowns auch) einen iTunes-Gutschein im Wert von 10’000 US-Dollar erhalten. Um welche Person es sich genau handelt, hat Apple noch nicht bekannt gegeben. In den nächsten Tagen wird Apple über weitere Einzelheiten informieren. Google I/O: Eine Vielzahl an Neuerungen und ein Musik-Streaming-Dienst
Google eröffnete die jährliche Entwicklerkonferenz «I/O» gestern Abend mit einer über drei Stunden andauernden Keynote. Während dieser Präsentation stellte der Suchmaschinenriese eine Vielzahl an Neuerungen vor. Fast alle wichtigen Google-Dienste wurden dabei berücksichtigt. Eines der Highlights war ein Musik-Streaming-Dienst.
Einige Zahlen
Bis dato wurden 900 Millionen Android-Geräte aktiviert. Auf all diesen Geräten wurden zudem bisher 48 Milliarden Apps installiert — Apple hat hier mit 50 Milliarden Installationen noch einen kleinen Vorsprung. Alleine im vergangenen Monat wurden laut Google 2.5 Milliarden Apps auf Android-Geräten installiert. In den letzten vier Monaten wurde mehr Geld an Entwickler ausbezahlt, als im gesamten vergangen Jahr. Damit will Google wohl demonstrieren, dass kostenpflichtige Apps auf Android nun auch vermehrt gekauft werden — bisher war dies ein grösseres Problem unter Android, da Android-Benutzer im Vergleich zu iOS-Benutzer bisher kaum Geld

FreeCiv now playable in browsers, including on iOS devices
FreeCiv is one of my favorite open source projects out there. Civilization is one of my favorite games, and FreeCiv is an open source version that you can download and play for free. The latest update of the game has added an HTML 5 version, which means that you can now load up and play FreeCiv right in any compatible browser. And that includes mobile Safari, which means you can now navigate to play.freeciv.org on one of your iOS devices, and play the game at will.

Daily iPhone App: Steve Jackson's Sorcery is interactive ebook bliss
I have to say -- the iPad is a terrific platform for interactive ebooks, but so far, I haven't been very impressed by the options out there. I do use my iPad for reading a lot, but the vast majority of my reading is done in either iBooks or a comic book reader. It's very rare that I will pick up an app that's designed to work as just one single book, no matter how many extras or interactive features are included.

Apple seeds seventh OS X 10.8.4 beta to developers
Apple is seeding yet another build of OS X 10.8.4 to developers, 12E52. As before there are no known issues, and Apple is still asking developers to concentrate testing on Safari, Wi-Fi, and graphics drivers. When it's finished v10.8.4 is primarily expected to be a maintenance update, although it does appear to include support for 802.11ac Wi-Fi.

Rovio teams up with Sony for the Angry Birds movie, coming July 2016
Rovio has announced, via tweet and then by news release, that it has lined up a deal and a date with Sony Pictures to distribute the upcoming Angry Birds movie. Rovio's been working on putting the frustrated fowl into a motion picture for a while, but this announcement makes it more or less a done deal -- all that needs to happen is that it gets made. Rovio says the movie will be out in theaters on July 1, 2016.
The film will be in 3D (and animated, of course). It'll be produced by "Despicable Me" producer John Cohen, along with David Maisel. There's no director or writer yet announced, but this isn't exactly rocket science: Odds are that there w

Apple vermeldet 50 Milliarden App-Downloads aus dem App Store
Vor etwas weniger als zwei Wochen startete Apple den Countdown für die den Milliarden App-Meilenstein. Nun wurde diese Anzahl an heruntergeladenen Applikationen für das iPhone, iPad und den iPod touch erreicht. Der IT-Konzern aus Cupertino bedankt sich auf der offiziellen Homepage mit den Worten „50 Milliarden App Downloads. Das wäre ohne euch nicht möglich gewesen“.

DirecTV Updates iPhone App With Voice Commands [iOS Blog]
DirecTV today updated its iPhone app with the ability to search channels and discover new entertainment with voice commands. The app allows users to view search results on the TV (via a supported DirecTV DVR) or on the iPhone. Similar to how one would interact with Apple's Siri, the app allows DirecTV customers to ask questions like "what action movies are on tonight?" or to make requests like "record True Blood" or "show me comedy movies." Apple CEO expected to show at Senate hearing on offshore tax issues
Apple will be the focus of a US Senate hearing next Tuesday, Politico says it has learned. The company's CEO, Tim Cook, is expected to testify in front of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigation regarding offshore tax practices. Other witnesses are also expected to speak, such as representatives from the Treasury Department and the IRS.

Google Play Music All Access announced at Google I/O
Google's long rumored music streaming service became a reality today with the announcement of Google Play Music All Access. The company has already cleared licensing deals with all three major labels left standing - Warner, Universal, and Sony - meaning they'll have millions of songs available upon launch.
Beyond the expected streaming service, All Access will also feature a Pandora-like radio service that allows each individual song to become a radio station with a simple button press. The service will also feature a component called Listen Now, which will highlight new releases and recommendations based on your listening habits. Music from your Google Music locker will also be included.

OS X 10.8.4 Build 12D52 Seeded to Developers [Mac Blog]
As noted by 9to5Mac, Apple today seeded build 12D52 of OS X 10.8.4 to developers. The release comes seven days after the previous build 12E47 and marks the seventh beta iteration of OS X 10.8.4. As with previous beta releases, Apple continues to ask developers to focus on Wi-Fi, Graphics Drivers, and Safari. The update is available through the software update tool in the Mac App Store and Apple's Developer Page.

Apple CEO Tim Cook will testify in front of the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigation next week, Politico is reporting. Pilot blames compass malfunction on iPhone interference
An iPhone has been blamed for a navigation error during a commercial airline flight in 2011, fueling the ongoing debate surrounding in-flight device usage. Apple App Store tops 50 billion downloads
The App Store has officially surpassed 50 billion downloads, Apple has just announced. The company has yet, however, to reveal the winners of an associated contest. The person who downloaded the 50 billionth app will get a $10,000 App Store gift card; meanwhile, 50 runner-ups will each get a $500 card.
