USPTO rejects some claims in Apple translucency patent
The US Patent and Trademark Office has issued a preliminary rejection of some claims in an Apple patent, Method and apparatus for providing translucent images on a computer display, says FOSS Patents. Claims 29-30 and 33-35 have been rejected. The USPTO says that aspects of the patent were obvious or anticipated in light of another patent, Method and apparatus for displaying simulated keyboards on touch-sensitive displays, as well as prior art.

Tweetwall rebuilt, new iPad app available
Tweetwall is a company that provides Twitter displays for events, allowing companies to show guests the live Twitter chatter about their events. Their clients have included CNN, Yahoo, Intel, PayPal, Microsoft, eBay, the Obama campaign, and the Webby Awards. Now Tweetwall has launched a rebuilt version of its service, including a redesign and a new iPad app offering AirPlay support.
The iPad app is currently free to download and works with AirPlay or the digital AV adapter to display your feed on a screen. Tweetwall is offering two variations on pricing for their service, a $49 a day self-service model where your wall is built from templates and a $500 per event customizable option. T-Mobile to push iPhone 5 in Mother's Day promo, leak indicates
T-Mobile is planning to push the iPhone 5 heavily in weekend advertising for Mother's Day, according to an internal memo obtained by TmoNews. The effort should specifically focus on the trade-in offer T-Mobile has had since April 12th, in which new or otherwise qualified customers can hand in an iPhone 4 or 4S and negate the cost of buying a 5. The deal applies to both GSM and CDMA trade-ins, but does require that the old hardware have no damage.

Apple's two-step ID now rolling out to a worldwide release
Apple recently introduced two-step verification for your Apple ID in certain countries, and the process is now being expanded to the rest of the world. The feature, which requires two different codes for verifying your Apple ID (if you want to be extra safe) was initially only available in the US, UK, Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand. But Apple has now included Canada in on the feature, as well as users in Argentina, Pakistan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Russia, Austria, Brazil, Belgium, and Portugal. In other words, two-step authentication is now rolling out to a more or less worldwide release.

FCC proposes boosted in-flight WiFi speed with 14GHz spectrum by 2020
The FCC released a report yesterday detailing plans to free up 500 megahertz of spectrum, in an effort to supercharge our nation's ground-to-air mobile broadband infrastructure. The proposed spectrum would fall within the 14.0-14.5 GHz band, which is currently utilized for satellite uplinks. The FCC references an earlier Qualcomm proposal, which suggests data speeds of 300 gigabits per second with refreshed equipment operating over the new spectrum. With that bandwidth, all of the 15,000 WiFi-equipped aircraft that are estimated to be operating by 2021 would be able to offer significantly improv

Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 Update 14.3.4
In case you haven't launched Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 in the past few days, there's an update for the office suite that became available on May 7.
The 14.3.4 update of Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 is considered to be a "critical" update, and includes a number of fixes. Most of the fixes appear to be for Outlook for Mac and PowerPoint for Mac, although there is one issue with saving files to SkyDrive and SharePoint in Microsoft Word for Mac that has been fixed as well.

University student crafts app that helps blind smartphone users snap photos
Dustin Adams, a Ph.D student at the University of California at Santa Cruz, has teamed up with colleagues at his school in order to craft an app that helps visually impaired users line up the ideal snapshot. Popular free messaging app LINE was forced to remove one of its key sticker features today, eliminating the ability for its users to purchase and send sticker sets as gifts to friends. Court rules Google must disclose search terms to Apple
A few weeks ago, Apple filed a motion alleging that Google's efforts to respond to Apple's discovery requests -- with respect to its ongoing suit against Samsung -- were lacking. Specifically, Apple claimed that the search terms Google employed in response to Apple's document production requests weren't sufficiently inclusive and consequently left out documents that would have otherwise been responsive.

Forums: Bluetooth keyboard typing issues with iPad and more

News: Report: Apple has waiting list to decrypt seized iPhones
Apple has created a waiting list to decrypt iPhones seized by police, due to high demand. A new report notes a case in which the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) had to wait for Apple to assist in unlocking the device of a man accused of distributing crack cocaine. According to the search warrant affidavit of an ATF agent, numerous law enforcement agencies do not have “the forensic capability” of unlocking an iPhone.…

Apple maintaining waiting list for police iPhone decryption requests
Apple is receiving so many requests from police agencies looking to decrypt seized iPhones that the company has started a waiting list, CNET reports. In an example exposed by court documents, the ATF is said to have wanted to break through the encryption of an iPhone 4S owned by a Kentucky man accused of distributing crack cocaine. The agency "contacted Apple to obtain assistance in unlocking the device," according to US District Judge Karen Caldwell, but was "placed on a waiting list by the company."

Apple receives iPhone unlock requests from law enforcement
The decryption on your iPhone is apparently secure enough that law enforcement agencies are waiting in line to have Apple "crack" the lock and provide data to be used as evidence.
According to a report by CNET, Apple has the ability to decrypt seized iPhones and has created a waiting list to handle requests. At one point last summer, the wait was over 7 weeks long and one ATF agent reported that it took his request at least four months to be processed. Microsoft: Apple reluctant to build a "Metro" iTunes for Windows 8
While Microsoft has invited Apple to produce a Windows 8 iTunes app, Cupertino's response has essentially been "don't hold your breath."
Speaking to CNNMoney, Microsoft's chief financial officer Tami Reller said, "The welcome mat has been laid out [for Apple]. It's not for a lack of trying." Note that Windows 8 customers can use iTunes, but only on the desktop. That's a less-than-optimal experience, and poor Surface RT users are without iTunes altogether, as the device wont' run non-Microsoft desktop software.

Samsung SM-C101 hits Bluetooth SIG, rumored to be next Galaxy Camera

No Metro-capable iTunes app coming to Windows 8 in near future
"You shouldn't expect an iTunes [Metro] app on Windows 8 any time soon," Microsoft CFO Tami Reller tells CNN Money. "iTunes is in high demand. The welcome mat has been laid out. Die Smart-Cover-Magneten am iPad sind praktisch – könnten aber für einige wenige Menschen ein Gesundheitsrisiko darstellen. Eine Schülerin hat festgestellt, dass die Magneten Defibrillatoren deaktivieren kann.
Im Gehäuse des “großen” iPad befinden sich seit der zweiten Generation des Apple-Tablets Magneten, mit deren Hilfe sich das Smart Cover an dem Gerät fixieren lässt – ohne, dass mehr als eine Berührung zwischen Cover und iPad nötig wäre.
Magneten können aber auch ein Gesundheitsrisiko darstellen – für Patienten, die einen implantierten Herzschrittmacher oder Defibrillator haben.

Ubisoft working with Kaspersky Lab to make Watch Dogs' hacking more true to life
Upcoming third-person action game Watch Dogs is set in a near-future environment modeled on Chicago, a city that's overseen by computers that can be manipulated. Yesterday Netflix rolled out the next major release of its iOS app, introducing a new auto-play feature for TV shows. While currently restricted to the iPad users, the new feature brings the software in line with the functionality of the current web and TV app. At the end of a TV episode Netflix will minimize the credits and cue the next episode in the season. If users do nothing, then the episode will will automatically begin playing within 10 seconds. In addition, post play also works for movies by providing users with three recommendations of other movies they may enjoy.

Apple Has Backlog of Requests From Police to Unlock Seized iPhones
Apple has created a 'waiting list' for law enforcement requests to unlock seized iOS devices, according to a report from CNET. The article notes a case in Kentucky where the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was the lead agency, and investigators contacted Apple for assistance after they were unable to locate any law enforcement agency in the country with the forensic capabilities to unlock an iPhone crucial to the case. Myth killer: iPad magnet effect on defibrillators wasn't "discovered" by a 14-year-old
Those magnets in every iPad that allow the Smart Cover and Smart Case to attach securely have the ability to accidentally shut off implanted heart defibrillators if the iPad happens to be lying on the patient's chest. According to a Bloomberg news report yesterday, that discovery was made by Gianna Chien, a 14-year-old high school freshman who presented the results of her science fair project to doctors at a meeting of the Heart Rhythm Society in Denver yesterday.

iRadio: Spekuliert Sony auf eine höhere Vergütung?
Einem Bericht der Financial Times zufolge sollen Apples Bemühungen um einen eigenen Musik-Streaming-Dienst einen Dämpfer erlitten haben. Sony Music soll momentan noch nicht bereit sein, einen Vertrag mit Apple zu unterzeichnen. Mutmasslich wartet Sony ein lukrativeres Angebot von Apple ab.
Ungenannte Branchenvertreter sagten gegenüber der Financial Times, dass Apple mit dem Streaming-Dienst höchstwahrscheinlich einen Gewinn erzielen wird und es auch aufgrund der hohen Bargeldreserven von Apple angebracht wäre, die Musik-Labels besser zu entschädigen.
Bei den anderen Musik-Labels sollen die Verhandlungen weiter fortgeschritten sein. Mit Universal Music wurde angeblich bereits ein Streaming-Vertrag unterzeichnet und mit Warner Music soll sich Apple in einem fortgeschrittenen Verhandlungsstadium befinden.

For a long time, Wizards of the Coast would not release anything official on iOS, even though the biggest collectible card game -- Magic: The Gathering -- seemed perfect for Apple's touchscreen platforms. Im Fiskaljahr 2012 erhielt Apples Finanzchef Peter Oppenheimer ein Salär in der Höhe von 68.6 Millionen US-Dollar, dies berichtet Bloomberg. Mit dieser Vergütung belohnt Apple den langjährigen Finanzchef für die sehr gute Finanzlage des Konzerns. Unter seiner Führung wuchs Apples Bar-Vermögen um rund 120 Milliarden US-Dollar an.

iPad-Magnet kann Herzschrittmacher deaktivieren
Eine 14-jährige Schülerin hat während ihrer Forschungsarbeit für einen Schulwettbewerb die Entdeckung gemacht, dass ein iPad für Menschen mit einem Herzschrittmacher ein Gesundheitsrisiko darstellen kann. Die im iPad verbauten Magnete, welche zur Halterung des Smart Covers benötigt werden, können unter Umständen zu einer Deaktivierung eines Herzschrittmachers führen. Zu einer Deaktivierung des Herzschrittmachers kommt es gemäss der Schülerin nur dann, wenn der Nutzer mit dem iPad auf der Brust einschläft oder das iPad bewusst auf die Brust gepresst wird. In diesem Fall sind die Magnete genügend nahe an der Brust, um den Herzschrittmacher deaktivieren zu können.
In allen anderen Fällen sollen die kleinen Magnete, welche in den iPads verbaut sind, kein Gesundheitsrisiko darstellen. Gemäss der Schülerin sollen 30 Prozent der Herzschrittmacher bei den untersuchten Patienten vom iPad

Tipp: Programme ausblenden statt minimieren
Bei der täglichen Benutzung eines Macs laufen meist mehrere Programme gleichzeitig. Damit nicht immer alle Fenster sichtbar sind, gibt es die Möglichkeit Fenster über den orangen Fenster-Knopf am oberen linken Fensterrand ins Dock zu «minimieren». Eine andere (weniger aufwändige) Möglichkeit ist es, Programme auszublenden. OS X gibt dem Benutzer die Möglichkeit Programme auszublenden, sodass diese keinen Platz mehr auf dem Bildschirm verbrauchen. Durch die Tastenkombination ⌘ H (oder dem Menü Programm-Menü XY ausblenden) wird das aktuell aktive Programm ausgeblendet bzw. «versteckt». Ein Klick auf das Icon des versteckten Programmes im Dock blendet das Programm wieder ein — selbiges kann auch über den Programm-Wechsler (⌘ ⇥) erzielt werden.

Das Dock stellt standardmässig nur zwei Zustände von Programmen an. Durch ein Indikator (ähnlich einem leuchtenden LED) unterhalb des Icons wird angezeigt, ob das Programm aktuell läuft oder nicht.
Über einen kleinen Terminal-Befehl können ausgeblendete Programme ebenfalls speziell ausgegeben werden. Durch den Befehl…

Startet Display-Produktion für neues iPhone im Juni?
Dem japanischen Blog «Nikkan» zufolge soll die Produktion bei Sharp für das Display der nächsten iPhone-Generation im Juni starten. Allerdings sollen wie beim iPhone 5 wieder mehrere Hersteller das Display für die nächste iPhone-Generation liefern. Während Sharp wie bereits angesprochen erst im Juni mit der Massenproduktion beginnen soll, produzieren die anderen beiden Hersteller «LG Display» und «Japan Display» den Gerüchten zufolge bereits jetzt Displays für den Einsatz im kommenden iPhone. In its latest report, industry research firm Canalys is reporting on what it calls "worldwide smart mobile device shipments" for the first quarter of the year -- a term that includes smartphones, notebooks and tablets. Of the 308.7 million devices that fall under one of those categories that shipping in Q1, around 60 percent were said to be Android devices, reflecting the platform's strength in smartphones -- the fastest-growing area of mobile electronics. Apple's iOS placed second again, despite a dominant presence in tablets.

Apple wins challenge to 'iBooks' trademark in court battle
Of the many contentious and complex legal battles Apple has had to fight, some are easier to sort out than others. In a New York courtroom on Wednesday, Judge Denise Cote -- who is also handling the complicated battle between Apple and the Department of Justice over e-book pricing -- made short work of a trademark dispute between Apple and a small-press publisher of sci-fi and horror novels. Report: Apple hits new snag with iRadio royalty negotiations
Apple may have hit another snag in its alleged plan to launch an "iRadio" service in the near future, according to an unconfirmed report from London's Financial Times. 14-Year-Old Discovers iPad Smart Cover Magnets Can Shut Off Pacemakers
A fourteen-year-old has discovered that the tiny magnets inside the iPad can inadvertently shut off pacemakers if the device is left on the chest, such as might happen if the user falls asleep with the iPad lying on them. Make Chrome open iTunes store links in iTunes
If you're having a hard time getting iTunes and App Store links to launch from Google Chrome right to the app from your browser, MacStories editor-in-chief Federico Viticci has found a nice workaround in the App Store support community.
The workaround requires editing program files, so be careful if you're new. The issue deals with Chrome's protocol handlers. If your issue is with iTunes rather than the Mac App Store look for the line that says "itms" instead of "macappstore." Here's the hack from support community member Dahveed.

YouTube and partners launch paid premium video channels
