Ask iLounge: Slow sync speeds when converting to 128kbps

Q: I’m over capacity on my iPod touch so i’ve chosen the convert to 128kbps option. It’s taking FOREVER to sync. Literally, it’s been syncing song 2 out of 1800 for an hour already. Is there any way to speed this up? I listen to a lot of music and I hate it when I remove a song from my iPod and then a few months later I suddenly feel like listening to it. - Chaz A: Although the option for converting tracks down to a lower bit…

Best App Ever 2012 winners announced, Walking Dead takes top prize

Our friend Jeff Scott over at 148Apps has been running the annual Best App Ever awards for five years now, featuring some of the greatest apps on the App Store voted down by popular demand to determine the "Best App Ever." Last year's winners have just been announced, and Telltale's The Walking Dead game has taken the top spot in voting. There's no question at all that it's a great game and a terrific app, though personally I played it on the Xbox 360, and I preferred that platform. But it's a solid choice, and if you don't like that one, there are lots and lots of other categories to go through.

Stretchable, serpentine lithium-ion battery works at three times its usual size

While we've seen more than a few flexible batteries in our day, they're not usually that great at withstanding tugs and pulls. A team-up between Northwestern University and the University of Illinois could give lithium-ion batteries that extreme elasticity with few of the drawbacks you'd expect. To make a stretchable battery that still maintains a typical density, researchers built electrode interconnects from serpentine metal wir

Review: STM Grip for iPad mini

Rather than faux leather, fabric, or another soft material, both the rear shell and front cover are made of hard, molded plastic. The material is lined with vertical ridges, which are handy when using the case as a stand, though the plastic is smooth. A two-inch-long plastic clip in the center of the lid’s right edge snaps around the tablet’s body, fitting into a recession in the rear shell. While it lacks button coverage, Grip’s…

Apple ordered to pay VirnetX $363K daily in patent dispute

Here's one way to force two warring companies to hash things out. A federal judge has ordered Apple to cough up more than US$360,000 daily to VirnetX until the two can come to an agreement on the former licensing four of the latter's patents. The penalties stem from a verdict delivered in November of 2012 which found that Apple's FaceTime and iMessage infringed on four of VirnetX's patents. A jury in Texas awarded VirnetX $368.2 million in damages, and Apple can still appeal that verdict. US Circuit Judge Leonard Davis has ordered Apple to pay $330,000 in damages and $33,000 in interest to VirnetX daily for the next 45 days, or more than $16 million in total, in an effort to get the two companies to the bargaining table. Additionally, Davis is making the comp

The contest apparently also seeks prosperous individuals willing to pay $1,500 for the prize, plus travel expense to pick it up. There might be good fiscal reasons for Google's parsimony, but I can't help noting that the $12 million of revenue generated by eager beta testers

Apple shareholders' meeting yields controversial votes

Apple has concluded today's annual shareholders' meeting, during which a number of proposals were voted on. Shareholders chose to re-elect the complete board of directors, and also approved items such as Apple's choice of accounting firm and a non-binding advisory vote on executive compensation. A measure that would've required executives to hold 33 percent of their stock awards until retirement was defeated, however, as was an initiative to create a board committee on human rights. The Apple shareholders' meeting was held in Cupertino earlier today, and CNBC has a full liveblog of all of the proceedings. There wasn't a lot of hard news out of the meeting, as most of it was taken up with bureaucratic goings-on, including the approval of a certain accounting firm, a few votes on executive payments, and the defeat of a proposal to create a Human Rights board committee at the company. All of Apple's directors were re-elected, and Tim Cook got a 99.1 percent approval rating from investors there. After the meeting, Cook took some questions from shareholders and answered them. He agreed that Apple is just as disappointed as investors in "where the stock trades now v

CARROT ($0.99) is essentially a game with delusions of productivity. In fact, it was initially pitched to me as a utility app with "personality." InfoMotion Sports thinks they're owed more than just a pat on the back, so it's bringing its 94Fifty smart basketball to everyday hoop fans. Splitsecnd dials 911 when your car crashes (video)

Wouldn't it be great if you could get OnStar in your beat-up old jalopy? Vowel-dropping startup Splitsecnd has launched a dongle that plugs into your car's cigarette lighter and calls 911 if it senses you've crashed. When triggered, the hardware uploads your location to the emergency services while a rep will calmly talk you through the process. The unit also comes with a button that lets you call during medical emergencies and other worrying times. It's available for $200 with a $15 monthly fee, and there's a commercial after the break showing how the concept works -- with a woman who takes an awfully long time to say thank you.
