iTunes 11.0.2 adds Composers view, improves responsiveness
Apple has released an iTunes 11.0.2 update for Mac and Windows users. Notes indicate that the update adds a Composers view to the software, and that the app should be more responsive when syncing large playlists. Apple bestätigt Hack-Attacke und bringt Java Update
Ausserdem soll heute noch ein Malware Removal Tool erscheinenIn einer Pressemitteilung hat Apple heute bestätigt, dass es Unbekannten geglückt sei, eine begrenzte Anzahl von Mac-Systemen innerhalb der Firma mit einer Malware zu infizieren. Betroffene Einheiten seien im Netzwerk isoliert worden, sodass kein grösserer Schaden entstand. Angeblich gibt es keine Hinweise auf möglichen Daten-Diebstahl.

AT&T gives travelers 1GB of not-quite-free WiFi in the UK through The Cloud
Getting data is still a pain while abroad: it usually involves either popping a local SIM into an unlocked device or simply paying through the nose for roaming rates. AT&T wants to meet visitors to the UK halfway through a new WiFi deal with BSkyB's The Cloud. Apple issues promised post-attack Java update
Apple has released a promised Java update in the wake of an attack by Chinese hackers. The patch is available in two versions, for Lion/Mountain Lion and Snow Leopard. In both cases the code should bring Java SE 6 up to v1.6.0_41.

You may have heard of Mailbox, an email productivity app that promises to rescue you from your overflowing inbox with its efficient method of email management. The app launched late last week with a long waiting list that's still being processed by the company.
Mailbox is more than an email client, it's a productivity tool. Dell reports Q4 2013 earnings: $14.3 billion in revenue as profits plummet 31 percent year-over-year
Dell hasn't had good news to share during its quarterly earnings reports in quite sometime. And on the eve of it going private, things don't appear to be on the verge of changing. The fourth quarter of its fiscal year 2013 saw the company rake in revenues totaling $14.3 billion, which is up slightly from Q3, but down 11 percent from the same period last year. T-Mobile launches prepaid GoSmart Mobile service starting at $30 a month, promises 'FreeDUM'
It's nothing we didn't see coming toward the end of last year, but T-Mobile's finally ready to make its GoSmart Mobile prepaid service officially official. As outlined during its trials, the service is offering up plans starting at $30 a month for unlimited talk and text. An extra $5 a month'll get you unlimited talk, text and web, and if you jump up to a full $45 a month, you can add 3G to the list. T-Mob's promising a service free of hidden fees and caps, or as the company puts it "No DUM caps. No DUM overages " -- you know, "FreeDUM in wireless," as it were. Apple Drives Growth In Two Major Consumer Electronics Categories
NPD today released a report examining U.S. consumer technology sales for 2012. Among other things, the company said consumer technology sales have dropped by $4 billion since 2010, down to $143 billion. Report: new Trojan aimed at OS X appears, using OpenSSH
Anti-malware software maker Intego is confirming reports of a new OS X-based malware it called "Pintsized" that uses a modified version of OpenSSH to potentially set up a remote connection into Mac accounts, whereupon it could be used to snoop for private owner information. Though not yet seen "in the wild," the malware attempts to disguise itself by using filenames that appear as part of the normal OS X printing system, and sets itself to launch on startup.

iOS 6.1.2: Jailbreak mit evasi0n weiterhin möglich
In der heute veröffentlichten iOS-Version 6.1.2 hat Apple die für den evasi0n-Jailbreak genutzten Lücken nicht geschlossen. Auch der Passcode-Bug ist in iOS 6.1.2 noch vorhanden. Offensichtlich wollte Apple mit diesem Update nur schnellstmöglich den Exchange-Bug beheben.

A better Google search experience with Choosy, Keyboard Maestro, and Fluid
There are so, so many things that annoy me about Google:
Google can remember everything about me except that I want my search results to open in a new window.
Google crappifies search results, so that instead of giving me a link to the site that it shows me, it actually gives me a link to Google itself which will redirect to the site. This makes copying the link a giant PITA as well as being slow.[1]
Google insists on showing me all of this "other stuff" that it thinks I want to see, when, in fact, all I really want to see is the search results for what I looked for.

Macintosh pen holder holds your writing utensil in a classic way
Sure, at over US$53 it's a little pricey, but I am completely charmed by this pen holder shaped like an old Macintosh. Maybe it's that Susan Kare face, or the floppy drive slot, or just the reassuring, all-in-one, boxy shape, but there's something about this little 3D-printed desktop decoration that I really like. Contact sync problems, Contacts Cleaner, and The Nuclear Option

Apple admits to being attacked by Chinese hackers
Apple was recently attacked by the same group of hackers that went after Facebook, the company has admitted to Reuters. It claims, however, that only a small number of its workers' Macs were accessed, and that "there was no evidence that any data left Apple." Firefox 19 now official with a built-in PDF viewer, themes on Android
Web denizens who regularly run Chrome or Safari are used to seeing PDFs in-browser, but their Firefox-using counterparts have had to settle for either a download or a third-party plugin. Apple releases iOS 6.1.2 update to fix Exchange bug
Apple has updated its iOS platform to version 6.1.2 specifically to address a serious bug in the way it handles Exchange calendars. The problem, which first appeared in version 6.1, caused excessive logging and usage of resources on Microsoft Exchange 2010-based servers, and also ran down the battery and overtaxed affected iOS devices. Apple identified a fix on Valentine's Day but released it mid-day on Tuesday. The problem also affected Office 365's Online Exchange.

Apple targeted by hackers
Reuters is reporting that Apple has been targeted in a cyber-attack. Apple announced the breach this morning, noting that malware had targeted a "limited number" of Mac systems. Reuters notes that the same hacker group is suspected of an attack on Facebook machines last week.
In a statement the company made to The Loop, Apple said that the malware infected the systems through a vulnerability in the Java browser plug-in. Reuters: Apple employee computers hacked, no evidence of stolen data
Last week, Facebook was the target of of a sophisticated hacking attack and now reports have surfaced that Apple's been victimized by a similar scheme. Reuters is reporting that a number of Apple's employees' Macs were infiltrated by a hacking scheme, but "there was no evidence that any data left Apple." To address the cyber security flaw found by the digital ne're-do-wells, Apple has promised a software patch will be released later today. Apple Employees' Macs Compromised by Chinese Hackers
A number of Macs owned by Apple employees were compromised by the same China-based hackers that targeted Facebook employees recently, reports Reuters. The news agency says Apple disclosed the breach to its reporters. Apple, which is working with law enforcement to track down the hackers, told Reuters that only a small number of its employees' Macintosh computers were breached, but "there was no evidence that any data left Apple." Retina MacBook Air coming in Q3, report claims
Apple is currently preparing suppliers for the launch of a Retina MacBook Air in the third quarter, according to a Taiwanese publication, Economic Daily. The report suggests that both the 11- and 13-inch models will upgrade to Retina displays, at the same time switching internal architecture to Intel's Haswell platform. NPD: Apple accounted for 1/5th of all US consumer tech revenue last year
The 2012 superlatives for Apple just keep rolling in. NPD Group released a report today showing an overall decline in US sales of consumer technology for the year, but that Apple's share of sales (based on revenue) rose from 17.3 percent in 2011 to 19.9 percent in 2012.
Apple's sales share was over 10 percent higher than number two brand Samsung at 9.3 percent. HP, Sony and Dell -- taken together -- had less of a share (15.6 percent) of US consumer technology sales than Apple alone.
NPD's data also show several ominous trends for all companies in the consumer technology sector. Revenues from sales of notebook computers were down 9 per

There aren't a lot of apps that specialize in portraits, but Photo Shaper (on sale for US$1.99 on the App Store) does just that.
The app is simplicity itself. Take a photo using the camera controls in the app, or grab something from your Camera Roll. The app mattes a circle around the photo, and gives you a wide choice of backgrounds. When you are happy, you can share the photo with Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or, of course, email.
The results look professional, and I think the app would be good for creating profiles on social networks, or just adding a unique look to any portrait.

Wer sich heutzutage Kopfhörer für seinen MP3-Player oder sein Smartphone kaufen will, hat jede Menge Auswahl. Zur Frage nach Klang gesellt sich mittlerweile so auch die Frage nach dem Design. In beiden Punkten brauchen sich die On-Ear Kopfhörer aus dem Hause SOL REPUBLIC absolut nicht zu verstecken.
Zum ersten Mal gesehen haben wir die SOL REPUBLIC Tracks auf der IFA 2012, mittlerweile gibt es die Kopfhörer auch bei uns zu kaufen und wir haben auch endlich ein Testgerät erhalten, dass ich euch im folgenden Testbericht gerne etwas näher bringen will.

Report: Apple now 20 percent of all US tech sales by revenue
Because it does so well with its two flagship products -- the iPhone and the iPad -- Apple now accounts for 19.9 percent of all US consumer tech sales based on revenue. The result far outpaces any other company, even arch-rival Samsung -- which saw a similar gain in percentage but remained below 10 percent in share. The gains for the two tech giants came at the expense of other companies, including HP, Dell and Sony, which saw a combined drop of $9.5 billion in revenue.

Mozilla: Firefox 19 steht zum Download bereit

Apple TV launches in India
It's been a year since Apple updated its "hobby" product, the Apple TV, but for fans in India the little black box has just appeared in the online store. The Apple TV sells for Rs. 7900, or about US$145.50, a premium of almost 50 percent over the pricing in the US.
Users in India can currently use the Apple TV to purchase content from the Indian iTunes store for viewing, but the streaming content available outside of the store -- such as Major League Baseball -- will have limited appeal to a subcontinent obsessed with cricket and football.

Hands-On: Das neue HTC One

Vorneweg: Das neue HTC One ist ein Killer-Smartphone, wenn man es anfasst. Zu den neuen Features und Funktionalitäten können wir hier im Trubel von London kaum haltbare Ergebnisse liefern, es ist einfach zu viel los. Ein paar Minuten konnten wir aber mit einem Gerät verbringen. Haptik und Design ist großartig, das 4,7"-Display hell und kräftig in den Farben. Im Inneren läuft übrigens ein 1,6 GHz schneller Qualcomm S4 Pro, als OS ist Android 4.1 installiert. Canonical: Ubuntu on Tablets erinnert an Windows 8

Microsoft does a stealth price increase of Office for Mac
While no one was looking, Microsoft hiked the price of Microsoft Office for Mac. A note in Computerworld also says Microsoft has stopped selling multi-license packages of the suite of office tools.
That makes Office for Mac 2011 the same price as Office 2013 for Windows. It comes about as Microsoft pushes for its cloud-based Office 365, a subscription-based plan.
A single license for Office for Mac Home and Student is now US$140, up 17% from the old $120 price. Office for Mac Home & Business was hiked 10% to $220.

HTC One coming to Sprint, T-Mobile, arriving in UK on EE, Vodafone and O2
Now that the HTC One is out in the open, you might be wondering where to get one, right? Fortunately, a number of carriers have stepped up: if you're in the UK, you'll find it with LTE on EE "mid-March" for £70 on a 2-year, £41 1GB plan and with O2 and Vodaphone on March 15th, with prices for the latter two still to come. Firefox 19 released, adds HTML5 PDF viewer
Mozilla has released Firefox 19 for Mac today. The updated web browser offers a number of bug fixes, however it's the new HTML5 PDF viewer that users will immediately notice. Firefox users will no longer be required to download Adobes Reader PDF plugin -- something which could be buggy and slow to load. The new PDF viewer built into Firefox 19 is built using HTML5 so it's pretty snappy.
Unless they're really into web development, the average user probably won't find any of the other updates too appealing. Here's the full release notes:

Apple awarded patents for Retina MBP, haptic feedback
A clever way of making sure haptic vibratory feedback is restricted to a specific area, the overall design of the Retina MacBook Pro and the structure-strengthening design of the RMBP's vents have all been given patent protection by the US Patent and Trademark Office. HTC One early hands-on!
The HTC One launch event has just begun, but we've already got our first hands-on! Not a lot of details at this point, as the phone is still being announced on-stage, but a kindly gentlemen sitting in the audience who had a handset let us try his out for a few moments. Early impressions are that the phone feels great in the hand, very thin and very well made. The UI customizations, meanwhile, are another story entirely. The India version of Apple’s web site is now showing a live page for Apple TV as the set-top box launches in the country. Various reports are listing slightly different prices in rupees for Apple TV, but it appears that the cost will be roughly $150. IMDb app adds support for Amazon Instant Video links, Oscars
Amazon's latest update to its IMDb app makes it easy for users to watch a movie when they are done reading about it. The new feature will let users click a link in IMDb and watch the title in the Amazon Instant Video app, if the movie is available as part of Amazon Prime video. It's a welcome link between two of Amazon's entertainment-focused properties.

Ab heute heisst Microsofts Maildienst nicht mehr "Hotmail", sondern Outlook.com. Nach sechs Monaten im Preview-Betrieb und 60 Millionen registrierten Usern werden sämtliche Hotmail-Accounts ab heute nach und nach auf den neuen Dienst umgestellt, was ohne Umstellungsprobleme vonstatten gehen soll: E-Mail-Adressen können auch weiterhin @hotmail.com heissen und alle anderen Daten wie Kontakte und Passwörter sollen automatisch mitkommen. Die Oberfläche übernimmt den Kachelstil von Windows 8 und ist übersichtlicher, noch sind aber nicht alle Features implementiert, so fehlt zum Beispiel noch das versprochene IMAP, das aber bald kommen soll.

Redesigned MacBook Air Reportedly Planned for 3Q 2013 Launch, Possibly with Retina Display
Taiwanese newspaper Economic Times reports [Google translation, via Macotakara] that Apple is lining up suppliers for its next-generation MacBook Air for launch in the third quarter of this year. According to the report, the MacBook Air will not only be receiving internal upgrades to Intel's new Haswell platform but also a "facelift" with new external features, including the possibility of a Retina display. The BBC has decided it can do without a HD channel just to showcase its gorgeous nature documentaries. As such, it's turning BBC HD into a high-definition simulcast of BBC Two, starting March 26th. Mac Pro no longer available from European Apple online stores
Time is quickly running out for European shoppers who hope to grab a Mac Pro from Apple. Back in January Apple announced that it would stop selling the Mac Pro on March 1st in Europe due to new regulations regarding the unit's power supply. It looks like Apple has now started the withdrawal of sales of the Mac Pro early. Virtually every European Apple online store now shows the product as "currently unavailable."

Opera WebKit switch caused loss of 90 jobs in last quarter

InfinityTask und Insomnia: Erweitertes Multitasking für iOS [Cydia]
Das “intelligente Multitasking” von iOS hat Vor- und natürlich auch Nachteile. So kann iOS dank seines besonderen Multitasking-Systems besser mit den begrenzten Ressourcen haushalten, die ein Smartphone nun mal hat. In manchen Situationen aber können die Limitierungen von iOS durchaus stören. InfinityTask und Insomnia können hier helfen.
Ich persönlich halte nichts von der Idee eines “unlimitierten Multitaskings” auf einem Smartphone oder Tablet. Diese Geräte haben nur begrenzte Ressourcen (Strom, Rechenkapazität, Displayfläche, etc.) und ehrlich gesagt möchte ich auch gar nicht jede einzelne App und jeden ihrer Prozesse ständig auf die Finger schauen müssen.

Outlook.com out of beta, Microsoft phasing out Hotmail
After its debut in beta form in last July, Microsoft has officially launched Outlook.com as its new flagship email service. At the same time, the Redmond-based software giant also revealed that since it was first unveiled, the service has grown from zero to over 60 million users in the past six months. Wenn Apple bei einer Präsentation ein Beispiel für einen grossen Wachstumsmarkt macht, dann fällt meist das Beispiel China. Apple weist oft darauf hin, dass man die eigenen Produkte für den chinesischen Markt speziell optimiert und schenkt dem grössten «Schwellenland» der Welt auch sonst eine grosse Beachtung. Dabei geht immer wieder vergessen, dass sich in Chinas direkter Nachbarschaft mit Indien ein weiterer Milliarden-Markt befindet, welcher von Apple bislang eher stiefmütterlich behandelt wurde. Firefox 19 for Mac Now Available for Download [Mac Blog]
Firefox 19 is slated to be launched on Tuesday, but as noted by The Next Web, the latest version is already available for download from Mozilla's servers. The U.S. version of Firefox 19 for the Mac can be found in the aforementioned folder by accessing the Mac directory and then selecting “en-US.” Most notably, this update includes a built-in PDF viewer, making former PDF viewing plug-ins obsolete. EA drops dozens of iOS games to 99 cents for President's Day
Here's some late-breaking Presidents' Day news for iOS gamers: EA has dropped the price of more than 50 of its mobile games to just US$0.99 in celebration of the holiday. Titles on sale span both iPhone and iPad and include the likes of Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Dead Space, Monopoly Millionaire and more. Rumors claim Google will launch its own retail stores, maybe by the holidays
On Friday, a report surfaced on 9to5Google that Google was making serious plans to open permanent retail locations, and it's been followed up today by the Wall Street Journal indicating the same thing. Both cite unnamed sources, who claim that the company wants to provide space for customers to try out its Nexus devices, software like the Chrome browser and unnamed upcoming products. Mac Pro Now Unavailable for Purchase from European Apple Online Stores
As noted by 9to5Mac, the Mac Pro is no longer available for purchase from Apple's European Online Stores. In late January, Apple informed its European distributors that sales of the Mac Pro would cease as of March 1st due to new regulatory requirements that go into effect on that date. At the time, Apple told resellers that it would accept orders up until February 18, which appears to apply to general consumers as well. Some EU countries list Mac Pro as 'currently unavailable'
As previously reported, Apple's Mac Pro tower is headed towards discontinuation in some countries of the European Union. Today, the computer is listed as "currently unavailable" at a number of European Apple online stores. The computers were scheduled for discontinuation of vendor orders on February 18, and all systems ordered prior to that date must be deliverable before March. Vendors will be allowed to sell stock after March 1. US availability is unaffected.

Report: February marks end of US lead in smart device users
According to analytics company Flurry, China's populace will have more active smartphones and tablets in use than the US by the end of February. More than 2.4 billion sessions per day across 275,000 application were tracked, which Flurry claims covers more than 90 percent of the world's smart devices. In its population of 1.3 billion people, Flurry estimates that by the end of the month, China will have 246 million devices activated, as compared to 230 million in the US amongst a population of 310 million.

Apple's place in the next generation of gaming
Sony is holding an event this Wednesday in New York, where the company is expected to announce the next version of its popular PlayStation console, essentially kicking off the next generation of video gaming (Nintendo actually did this last year with the launch of its Wii U console, but sales of that device haven't done so well, and Mario's Japanese overlords tend to do their own thing, no matter what Microsoft and Sony do). So this TechCrunch editorial about Apple entering the gaming space for real comes at a very interesting time. Sony's about to announce a new console, and Microsoft will presumably do the same

BlackBerry says TIFF vulnerability exposes enterprise servers to malware

Microsoft does a stealth price increase of Office for Mac
While no one was looking, Microsoft hiked the price of Microsoft Office for Mac. A note in ComputerWorld also says Microsoft has stopped selling multi-license packages of the suite of office tools.
That makes Office for Mac 2011 the same price as Office 2013 for Windows. It comes about as Microsoft pushes for its cloud-based Office 365, a subscription-based plan.
A single license for Office for Mac Home and Student is now US$140, up 17% from the old $120 price. Office for Mac Home & Business was hiked 10% to $220.

Prices quietly rise on Office for Mac 2011
Microsoft has quietly increased the prices on Office for Mac 2011, putting them on par with Office 2013 for Windows, reports note. The change appears to have taken place in late January or early February, but went unannounced by Microsoft. At the same time, multi-license bundles have been dropped, which previously allowed people to buy several copies of Office at a discounted rate.

An iPad mini with Retina Display could cost $12 more to build
Hardware market research firm iSuppli has released a new report that claims the cost-per-device of an iPad mini sporting a Retina Display screen could be fairly high: as much as $12 or more. Even if all of the other parts stay the same price, just adding a Retina Display in the iPad mini's size, iSuppli's report suggests, would bring Apple's cost above $200, which would likely mean higher costs for consumers as well.
Which doesn't seem all that impossible -- the current iPad mini is selling quite well at $329, and you have to think that potential purchasers would be happy to spend a bit more for a full Retina Display. Plus, if Apple really needed to
