Hulu Plus gets 'Kids Lock' feature on iPad, enhances the experience for little ones
Hulu's Kids Lock has already been implemented on Android, and now it's time for the children-tailored, itty-bitty feature to make its way to iOS -- well, at least to the iPad. Adobe takes 10 percent haul from Director 12-built apps
Adobe is now claiming a 10 percent cut of earnings over $20,000 from any iOS app made with Director 12, reports say. The demand can be found in the end-user license agreement for the software. 12 is the first version of Director to support publishing apps directly to iOS, including converting existing titles.

NVIDIA posts Q4 2013 earnings: $1.1 billion in revenue, $174 million in profit
Earnings may be down slightly sequentially for the graphics and mobile CPU powerhouse, but things are still looking good compared to the same period last year. For the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2013 NVIDIA is reporting $1.1 billion in revenue, a small dip from last quarter's record $1.2 billion, but up from 2012's $950 million. That's an increase of 16.1 percent year-over-year and, perhaps most importantly, net income was up 50 percent to $174 million. Review: iHome Vertical Origami Smart Book for iPad mini
Right out of the packaging, it’s clear that iHome and LifeWorks chose to use lower quality materials and skimped a little bit on manufacturing quality, too. Report dismisses chance of TV-related Apple event in March
Apple isn't planning to hold a TV-related event next month, says The Loop. The original claim was raised earlier today by Jefferies analyst Peter Misek, who said that "channel checks" pointed to a "product event" involving the Apple TV, and possibly rolling out an SDK for a future dedicated TV set. In response, The Loop's Jim Dalrymple simply writes "Nope." Dalrymple is known, however, to have reliable sources for such matters.

Wikipedia adds watchlists to mobile web app, plans to release more features soon
With over three billion mobile pageviews last month, Wikipedia certainly has the consumption side of information down. Mobile content creation, on the other hand, has been severely limited. Beginning with updates released today, the Wikimedia mobile web team aims to change that. Chitika: All versions of iOS 6 now account for 83.1% of iOS traffic
The folks at Chitika have just released the results of a study looking at iOS version distribution post-iOS 6.1.1. The numbers are quite amazing; all versions of iOS 6 (6.0, 6.1.0, 6.1.1) now account for 83.1 percent of all iOS traffic.
At this point, only about 12.2 percent of all iOS users are still on iOS 5, while approximately 5 percent of total iOS users are using earlier versions of iOS. Once again, this number points out the fragmentation that is rampant in the Android OS world.
Google's numbers indicate that only 42.6 percent of Android users are running devices on Android OS 4.0 ("Ice Cream Sandwich") or 4.1-4.2 ("Jelly Bean"). Android 4.0 hit the market on D

Apple TV Jailbreak Updated for 5.2 Software, Third-Generation Model and Some Plug-ins Still Unsupported [iOS Blog]
Apple TV's latest update -- version 5.2 -- was originally released back in January with Bluetooth Keyboard support and a number of other features. Today, FireCore released updated versions of aTV Flash (black) and its Seas0nPass jailbreaking app. The app jailbreaks any second-generation Apple TV unit with the 5.2 software installed, but the jailbreak for the third generation Apple TV released in March 2012 remains missing in action. As such, second-generation Apple TV units can fetch a premium on the secondary market.

Briefly: ThunderBolt Express Doc preorders, HBO Go Airplay
Belkin has quietly started accepting preorders for its Thunderbolt Express Dock. Originally announced with a September 2012 launch date at last year's CES, the Express Dock has undergone numerous set backs and revisions. The final shipping version will allow customers to expand a single Thunderbolt port into eight different ports, including one FireWire 800, one Gigabit Ethernet, three USB 3.0, one 3.5mm audio-in, one 3.5mm audio out, and one Thunderbolt port. While pre-orders are being accepted online for $300, an official shipping date is still yet to be released.

FireCore updates aTV Flash, Seas0nPass for Apple TV 5.2
Developer FireCore has released updated versions of aTV Flash (black) and Seas0nPass for people hoping to jailbreak Apple TVs running the new v5.2 firmware. While Seas0nPass is simply the required jailbreaking utility, aTV Flash adds new functions, such as web browsing and wider format compatibility. Finding Steve's recovery partition: Solving an Apple mystery
Yesterday, fellow blogger Steve Sande hopped into the TUAW backchannel all fussed. As part of some iMovie troubleshooting he was doing with Apple's support wizards, he was trying to get his new iMac to boot into the recovery partition and was getting nowhere. Holding down the Option key during reboot wasn't showing the volume as an option the way he expected.
Has this happened to you? Well, there's a reason the recovery partition didn't show up -- Steve was working with a Fusion drive-based system.
We started by checking that the disk contained the recovery partition.

Google already tipped its hand on this one, but those looking for some widgets with their Google Now can get their fix today with the latest update to the Google Search app for Android. Ask iLounge: Sending all iPhone calls to voicemail
Q: I’m wondering if there is a way to direct all of my calls to my voicemail without actually having to turn on Airplane Mode? I know there’s a “Do Not Disturb” feature on the new iPhones, but as I understand it, that will also silence all of my other alarms and notifications for things like text messages. Essential Anatomy is the future of touch-based anatomy learning
If you've read a lot of my articles over the years you may have picked up that I'm a bit of a human anatomy buff. Yeah, that sounds weird, I know. Some people like understanding their cars and computers better, I like understanding my body. And it's thanks to the iPad that the study of human anatomy has never been easier, or more interactive, than before. No Apple Television-Related Event Scheduled for Next Month
Following today's report from Jefferies analyst Peter Misek claiming that Apple will be holding a television-related product event in March, perhaps to introduce developer tools for the Apple TV and a future television set lineup, The Loop's Jim Dalyrmple has weighed in with one of his typical one-word answers to refute the claim: "Nope." 2013 Chevy Sonic, Spark models get Siri support via MyLink
As promised, Chevrolet's 2013 Sonic and Spark cars have been updated to support Siri Eyes Free. The bridge is handled through MyLink, a touchscreen interface built into the vehicles. Xbox Founding Engineer Says Apple TV Could Destroy Console Gaming with Third-Party Apps

Apple TV: Apple-Event im März in Vorbereitung
Einem Bericht von Peter Misek Analyst bei Jeffries zufolge, plant Apple ein Special Event zu Apple TV und Co im März dieses Jahres. Dieser Vermutung liegt ein sogenannter Channel Check zugrunde eine Untersuchung der Distributionskanäle. Misek glaube demgemäß an eine Öffnung der jetzigen Apple-TV-Plattform für Entwickler und somit an die zukünftige Unterstützung fremder Apps für Apples Set-Top-Box.

As of last Friday, Apple is the last remaining defendant in the US Department of Justice ebook antitrust case. On Friday, Macmillan settled with the government, the last of the original five publishers named in the case to do so. Apple loses ruling over Brazilian iPhone trademark
Brazil's Institute of Industrial Property has ruled that Apple does not have an exclusive trademark on the term "iPhone" in the country, according to the BBC. Local firm Gradiente Eletronica registered the name in 2000, well before Apple, which only secured the name in 2007. Opera hits 300M users, will transition to WebKit this year
Opera, the web browser available for Mac, iOS, PC and Andriod, has reached 300 million monthly users, the company has announced in a press release.
Opera Software ASA also notes that the Opera web browser will be transitioning to the WebKit engine in future versions, taking advantage of the performance and standards WebKit has to offer.

Apple's 4.8-Inch iPhone 6 Reportedly Not Launching Until Mid-2014
Amid circulating rumors of a larger display for the iPhone, Jeffries analyst Peter Misek today reported that he does not see the device launching until mid-2014. Misek argues that problems with display yield and substantial other changes for the iPhone 6 will make a 2013 launch unlikely. Apple Planning March Special Event to Introduce Developer Tools for TV?
Citing "channel checks", Jeffries analyst Peter Misek today reported in a research note that Apple appears to be preparing for a television-related product event next month. Ouch. We had an inkling this was coming, but now it's official: the Brazilian authorities have ruled in favor of a small company called Gradient Eletronica in its trademark tussle with Apple. Reuters reports that shares of German television set maker Loewe jumped 43% today as rumors of a possible acquisition by Apple resurfaced. In-car GPS developers have long had to wrestle with the urban canyon effect that blocks or bounces signals downtown: they often have to make best guesses for accuracy when they can't count on cellular or WiFi triangulation to pick up the slack, like a smartphone would. Gartner's quarterly Market Share Analysis: Mobile Phones, Worldwide report shows that Samsung and Apple continue to dominate the smartphone market, with more than 52% of the market between them, but that Android's market share grew dramatically year-on-year while iOS saw a decline. Samsung's Q4 2012 smartphone sales totalled 64.5 million handsets, up 85.3% on the previous year, while Apple's sales reached 43.5 million, a 22.6% increase. Apple Becomes Top-Selling Phone Manufacturer in Japan After Six-Year Battle [iOS Blog]
The iPhone was the best-selling phone in Japan throughout the whole of the last year, the first time the title has ever been taken from a Japanese firm, according to Counterpoint Research's Country Market Share Report (via The Next Web). The number one slot had been held by local firm Sharp for the previous six years. Apple grabbed 15% of the market, just ahead of local firms Sharp and Fujitsu, at 14% each. Microsoft patches Office for Mac licensing bug
Microsoft has released an update to its Office for Mac 2011 software. The Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 14.3.1 Update fixes an issue that could "cause Office 2011 applications to report a problem with Licensing even though the applications continue to run unaffected," according to the company. In other words, the bug caused several genuinely-licensed copies of Office 2011 to think they were unlicensed and stop working.

Slacker music service relaunches, takes aim at Spotify with new iOS app
Just shy of its sixth birthday, streaming music service Slacker flipped the switch on a major relaunch today that it hopes will put it ahead of competitors like Spotify and Pandora. The company is maintaining a free-to-stream, radio-style model for all users but also has two paid tiers that allow for more listening options.
The new service is built on a library of more than 13 million songs, which Slacker is saying makes its offering 10 times that of Pandora's. Apple hat soeben die Preise der MacBook Pro mit Retina Displays gesenkt und gleichzeitig die Prozessoren der Laptops aktualisiert.
Das 13-Zoll MacBook Pro mit Retina Display kann neu ab CHF 1’699.– für das Modell mit 128GB Flash-Speicher und CHF 1’899.– für das neue Modell mit 2.6 GHz Prozessor und 256GB Flash-Speicher erworben werden. Die Preisreduktionen betragen 230 bzw. 380 Schweizer Franken.
Das 15-Zoll MacBook Pro mit Retina Display hat jetzt einen schnelleren 2.4 GHz Quad-Core Prozessor und das Top-Modell der 15-Zoll Notebooks ist mit einem 2.7 GHz Quad-Core Prozessor und 16GB Arbeitsspeicher ausgestattet.

Apple is updating the specs and dropping the price on select MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models. According to a press release, the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro will now start at US$1,499 for the base 128 GB model, down from the original $1,699 price tag. Webquake: Quake spielen im Browser, dank HTML5
Wer Lust hat auf eine Portion klassischer Egoshooter zwischendurch, braucht jetzt nur noch Chrome oder Firefox. Webquake ist eine HTML5-Version von Quake, die Vitaliy Kuzmin aka SiPlus programmiert hat. Die läuft bisher zwar nur im Single-Player Modus, der Multiplayer-Modus ist aber in Planung und laut Kuzmin funktioniert Webquake sogar in der Android-Version von Firefox, wenn auch quälend langsam. Android 4.2.2 kommt langsam, zeigt kleinere Änderungen

In den USA ist gestern auf diversen Nexus-Geräten das Update auf Android 4.2.2-Geräten eingetrudelt, wobei als einzige Änderungen Performance- und Stabilitätsverbesserungen angegeben wurden. Android Police haben ein wenig genauer in den Changelogs nachgeschaut und einige kleinere Tweaks entdeckt: so zeigen zum Beispiel Downloads aus Google Play jetzt an, wie lange es noch bis dauert bis sie vollständig geladen sind und die Android Debug Bridge hat eine Whitelist bekommen. Die Schnelleinstellungsleiste bietet nun die Möglichkeit, Bluetooth und WLAN mit einem langen Fingerdruck ein- und auszuschalten. Gartner: half of smartphones sold are Apple or Samsung, Huawei third for the first time
We saw last quarter that mobile phone sales were on the decline in general, but sales of smartphones were way, way up. Opera steigt auf Apples WebKit um
Der norwegische Browser-Hersteller Opera wird für seine künftigen Produkte auf Apples Rendering-Engine «WebKit» umsteigen. Als JavaScript-Engine kommt künftig Googles V8 zum Einsatz. Tim Cook bezeichnet Aktionärsklage als «bizarr»
In der letzten Woche wurde bekannt, dass der Hedge-Fund «Greenlight Capital» im US-Bundesstaat New York eine Klage gegen Apple eingereicht hat. President Obama recognizes Apple during State of the Union address
During tonight's State of the Union address, US President Barack Obama gave a specific shout out to Apple, and indirectly to CEO Tim Cook, who is attending the speech.
The President cited Apple's plans to bring production of one of its Mac product lines back to the U.S. Cook was previously announced as one of Michelle Obama's guests for the State of the Union address.

President Obama signs executive order focused on improving national cybersecurity
While the President is currently giving his State of the Union address (viewable on YouTube here), earlier today he signed an executive order intended to improve the network security of "critical infrastructure." As noted by The Hill, the order charges the National Institute of Standards and Technology with the task of creating a framework of best practices for operators in industries like transportation, water and health to follow, due in the next 240 days. The Department of Homeland Security is also heading up a voluntary program works with various agencies and industry groups to make sure the policies are actually adopted, and find ways to create incentives for that to happen. President Obama Mentions Apple Building Macs in America During State of the Union Address
President Barack Obama tonight mentioned Apple during his State of the Union speech to Congress, mentioning the fact that Apple will again be building Macs in the United States in 2013. CEO Tim Cook disclosed that plan back in December. Evasi0n jailbreak updated for bugs, new iOS 6.1.1 update
The team behind the Evasi0n jailbreak for devices running iOS 6.0 and later have unveiled an updated version in order to fix some bugs that appeared with the original release as well as re-add support for iPhone 4S devices that were updated to iOS 6.1.1, released yesterday. Apple released iOS 6.1.1 as a fix for problems with v6.1 on the iPhone 4S, including unusual battery drain and 3G connectivity issues. The updated Evasi0n tool (now at version 1.3) tackles other problems.

Corsair pops the question, acquires Scotland-based Simple Audio
Scotland-based Simple Audio announced today that it has been acquired by American computer component maker Corsair. The five-year-old audio firm is best known in Europe for its networked set-top receivers, which are capable of sharing music from PCs, Macs, TVs, iPods and MP3 players. In an effort to expand its reach, Simple Audio hopes that this multi-million dollar deal will help bring its products stateside sometime this year. Apple has Team of 100 Product Designers Working on a Smart Watch
Bloomberg is reporting that Apple has a team of about 100 product designers working on a wristwatch computer, according to "two people familiar with the company's plans." Microsoft pushing Surface RT update to tackle WiFi and performance issues

Apple announces $8B paid out to developers
Apple's iOS App Store saw a boom in app purchases at the end of the year that propelled total developer payments to an impressive US$8 billion. Apple updates SMC firmware for recent MacBook Pros
Users owning a 15- or 17-inch MacBook Pro that is either the "Mid-2010" or the "Early 2011" models will soon see an SMC firmware update for their machines that will update the firmware to version 1.7. The upgrade addresses "a rare issue on some Apple notebooks where a battery that has accumulated more than 1,000 charge cycles may unexpectedly shut down or stop functioning," according to the company. Apple rates the batteries as being good for 1,000 or more cycles.

W3C to explore a proposal bringing DRM hooks to HTML
The web is defined by the free, open exchange of information, right? Not necessarily. The W3C has decided that it's "in scope" for its HTML Working Group to explore a specification for the Encrypted Media Extensions framework, which would allow companies to plug in their own copy protection for web content. Daily iPhone App: Quento is a spelling game, but with math
Quento was recommended to me just recently by someone I met at Macworld or 360iDev, and unfortunately, I don't remember who told me about it. But the recommendation was great, and now I'm passing it on to you.
