Apple releases MacBook Pro firmware update to fix battery issues

Apple has released the MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.7. The update addresses a very specific issue owners of MacBook Pro (15 and 17-inch, Early 2011) and MacBook Pro (15 and 17-inch, Mid 2010) where having. Though rare, the issue would cause the laptops to unexpectedly shut down or stop functioning after more than 1000 battery charge cycles. Apple wins patent on 'microslot' antenna technology

Apple has won the US patent rights to a "microslot" antenna concept, notes AppleInsider. The technology allows for extremely compact antenna designs, including ones built into the housing of electronics. In the filing for the patent, Apple describes "dielectric-filled microslots that are formed in a ground plane element;" the ground plane can be a part of a device's housing, as long as that housing is conductive. The patent also allows for multiple bands, something essential with modern Wi-Fi and cellular networks. Bluetooth and GPS could be supported as well.

Apple has won two new design trademarks via the US Patent and Trademark Office. The first is for the fourth-generation iPod classic, at the time still known as just the iPod. Apple plant drittes Forschungszentrum in Israel

Das israelische News-Portal «Globes» berichtet, dass Apple in Israel ein drittes Forschungs- und Entwicklungszentrum aufbauen wird. Das Center soll sich in der israelischen Stadt Ra’anana befinden. Ra’anana ist ein bekannter Standort für IT-Konzerne, mit Niederlassungen von HP, SAP und anderen IT-Konzernen. Das Entwicklungszentrum von Apple soll im Endausbau insgesamt über 100 bis 150 Mitarbeitende verfügen. Bei diesen Mitarbeitern soll es sich vorwiegend um ehemalige Angestellte von Texas Instruments handeln. Texas Instruments hat zuvor bekannt gegeben, aufgrund von Sparmassnahmen am Standort Ra’anana 250 Mitarbeitende zu entlassen.
