Daily iPhone App: After Burner Climax brings high flying action to iOS
After Burner Climax was originally an arcade title, part of the old After Burner series (that was installed in an actual sit-in unit that spun around as you were flying -- pretty neat!). The title made the leap to Xbox Live Arcade and PSN a few years ago, and now Sega has released this version for iOS, available now on the App Store.
Unfortunately, without all of the arcade bells and whistles, this version feels just a little bit flat -- it's probably meant more for nostalgic Sega fans than anyone else. Tamagotchi coming back as an iOS app
Truth be told, I was just a little too old to land in the middle of the Tamagotchi craze: My childhood was more full of Trapper Keepers and Game Boys than the famous Japanese virtual pets. But of course I saw them all over the place back in the '90s, as did everyone, really. And now the original toy is returning on iOS, as an upcoming app called Tamagotchi l.i.f.e.

Epic Announces Closure of Impossible Studios, 'Infinity Blade Dungeons' Put on Hold
Epic Games' Infinity Blade: Dungeons was first announced in March of 2012, as a demo game on the third generation iPad. The game was designed by Epic but handed over to Impossible Studios, a new division housing ex-employees of Big Huge Games. iPhone users complain about battery, heat issues in iOS 6.1
Some iPhone owners are complaining about battery life and/or overheating after upgrading to iOS 6.1, according to multiple threads on Apple's support forums. The exact cause of the problems is unknown, but one owner notes that their phone appears to have been running something in the background, and that a factory reset fixed the situation. Some reports specifically suggest that the problem is related to Mail's handling of Exchange.

Apple hires senior OLED researcher away from LG Display
It's not confirmation that we'll ever see Apple devices with OLED displays, but a new hire by the company definitely tips the scale in favor of the technology one day finding a home in iPhones, iMacs and other products. Vodafone UK warns iPhone 4S owners about iOS 6.1
Carrier Vodafone UK is warning iPhone 4S owners against upgrading to iOS 6.1, accounts say. "If you've not already downloaded iOS 6.1 for your iPhone 4s [sic], please hold off for the next version while Apple fixes 3G performance issues. Infinity Blade: Dungeons on hold as Epic shuts down studio
Announced alongside the third-generation iPad on in March of last year, Epic Games' action-RPG spin-off of the Infinity Blade franchise still isn't out -- and, from the sound of things, we wouldn't count on it shipping anytime soon, if ever. As Joystiq reports, Epic is shuttering Impossible Studios, the developer of Infinity Blade: Dungeons, and putting the game "on hold."

Almost 7 million iOS devices have been jailbroken since evasi0n was released earlier this week, according to Jay Freeman, administrator of the Cydia app store for jailbreakers. Cydia tracking has so far recorded about 5.15 million iPhones, 1.35 million iPads, and 400,000 iPod touches. iMore's Rene Ritchie has written an interesting post from his trip to Macworld 2013 last week about a trend I've heard a few times before: using your iPad mini as an actual phone. Ritchie wanted to save battery charge on his iPhone, so during his trip when he needed to check his itinerary or make a quick phone call, he pulled out the iPad mini and used Skype or browsed around the Internet. HP orders labor practice changes at Chinese manufacturers
Addressing its own issues with the Chinese labor force used to manufacture its devices, Hewlett Packard today issued new standards and practices for assembly companies. BBC iPlayer to stream shows ahead of broadcast
The BBC is looking at debuting some of its programming over iPlayer before it airs on television. The projected yearlong trial will test a variety of programs, Radio Times reports, but the BBC hasn't specified whether that will include established series or new ones. The BBC says there were more than 187 million requests for content through iPlayer last month and are hoping it will be a boost in overall viewing figures.

The US Department of Justice has settled with publisher Macmillan in a long-running e-book price-fixing lawsuit, says AllThingsD. Instashare recently landed in the iOS App Store and it addresses a common problem encountered by many Apple users - how do you transfer a file quickly and easily between your iOS devices and your Mac?
Instashare is as easy to setup as it is to use. All you have to do is install the iOS app on your iPhone and the OS X app on your Mac. The OS X version sits in your menu bar and lets you drag and drop files you want to transfer to your iPhone. Apple boosts Indian sales 300-400 percent in three months
Apple has managed to grow sales in India about 300 to 400 percent in three months, according to the Times of India. The paper notes that after long neglecting the country, Apple has begun a hard marketing campaign for the iPhone, steering away from a previous strategy which relied on local cellphone carriers. Apple sees huge growth in India, but trails behind competitors
TechCrunch reports that Apple has seen a huge gain in sales in India -- up to 400% -- in July through September of 2012, but still has a long way to go compared to its competitors in the region.
According to the research firm IDC (based on figures collated from July-September of 2012), Apple isn't in the top five of handset market share. Samsung is at the top, with a 46 per cent share, and HTC at number 5, with a 6.6 percent market share. Additionally, web browsing stats reveal that Apple has a tiny percentage of current mobile web traffic.

Saudi Arabien: Geheime US-Drohnen-Basis auf Bing Maps entdeckt?

Diese Woche tauchten erstmals Berichte in den Medien auf, nach denen die USA eine geheime Drohnen-Basis in Saudi Arabien betreiben soll. Die Basis soll vor zwei Jahren errichtet worden und für zahlreiche Drohnen-Angriffe in Jemen Dreh- und Angelpunkt gewesen sein. Nun wurde auf Bing Maps ein Areal entdeckt, das jene Vermutungen bekräftigen könnte. Interessanterweise ist diese Basis nicht auf Google Maps zu finden. Laut Wired seien die Quellen aber "ziemlich sicher". Wir schauen uns dort derweil ein bisschen genauer um.

Adobe releases emergency Flash update for OS X
Adobe released a security update for its OS X Flash Player that addresses a critical vulnerability being exploited in the wild.
According to the Adobe advisory, the CVE-2013-0634 vulnerability targets OS X users running Firefox or Safari who encounter malicious Flash content on website. This vulnerability, detailed in the National Vulnerability Database, allows attackers to remotely execute malicious code on the user's computer.

Hedge-Fund-Manager möchte Apples Bargeldreserven anzapfen
Der US-Hedge-Fund-Manager David Einhorn, Gründer und Präsident des Hedge-Funds «Greenlight Capital», will mit Hilfe anderer Apple-Aktionäre dafür sorgen, dass an der Apple-Generalversammlung am 27. Februar gegen den zweiten Antrag auf der Traktandenliste votiert wird (Antragsschreiben PDF). Einhorn geht davon aus, dass nach der Annahme dieses Antrags Apple keine Vorzugsaktien mehr ausgeben könnte. Einhorn vermutet zudem, dass mit der Annahme dieses Antrags dem Managment die Möglichkeit genommen würde, den Aktionären Teile des Apple-Vermögens auszuzahlen. Der Manager ist der Überzeugung, dass die Apple-Bargeldreserven, welche momentan mit 137 Milliarden US-Dollar beziffert werden, teilweise den Aktionären gehören. Die Aktionäre sollen angemessen an den Bargeldreserven beteiligt werden, wie der Manager weiter fordert. Gemäss Einhorn haben die Bargeldreserven pro Aktie einen Wert von 145 US-Dollar. One gripe I hear a lot from OS X Mountain Lion users is that they sometimes get notifications bothering them at the most inopportune times. I know that when I'm working on TUAW TV Live, the last thing I want is something else to distract my attention when I'm already distracted by about 15 other open windows. Am Donnerstag hatte ein Fehler in Facebook Connect zur Folge, das alle Besucher von Webseiten wie MSNBC, CNN, Yelp und ein paar anderen unfreiwillig auf eine Fehlerseite bei Facebook umgeleitet wurden. Renderings: Sieht so das iPad 5 aus?
Während sich in den letzten Wochen die Gerüchte zur nächsten iPad-Generation häuften, hat MacRumors die Designer von «CiaccareseDesign» beauftragt, einige Renderings auf Basis der aktuellen Gerüchte zu erstellen.

European Publishers Council wants Google to pay for media use region-wide

Android auf einem Drittel aller Handys im letzten Quartal

Eine neue Statistik von Canalsys zeigt ein Mal mehr: Android ist unaufhaltsam. Mittlerweile ist das Betriebssystem auf einem Drittel aller weltweit verkauften Handys (nicht nur Smartphones) vertreten. Samsung und Huawei, ZTE und Lenovo in China, wo mittlerweile 73 Prozent der verkauften Handys Smartphones sind, sind die Haupttreiber dieser Entwicklung. Apple kommt weltweit in dieser Kategorie nur auf 11 Prozent. Und auch sie haben diesen Aufschwung vor allem China zu verdanken. Rechnet man nur die Smartphones, dann ist Android mit 69 Prozent zwar klarer Sieger, iOS hat aber 5% aufgeholt dank iPhone 5 und schafft immerhin 22% Marktanteil. In eigener Sache: Neue Profile & Händlerverzeichnis
Über die letzten Wochen hat sich auf macprime.ch einiges getan. Eine der zwei grössten Neuerungen wurde dieser Tage online geschalten: die neuen Profile. Bereits seit drei Wochen online ist das überarbeitete Händlerverzeichnis.

Roku 4200X appears in FCC filing, shows off smaller footprint
The last time Roku properly refreshed its line of media streamers was back in 2011 with the Roku 2 series but we're apparently in for at least one new addition, if not a whole new line. This 4200X (the current players are in the 2000/3000 series) just popped up in the FCC's database, although most of the juicy information was withheld. Android und iOS festigen Position auf US-Smartphone-Markt
Gemäss einer Studie von «comScore» haben die beiden Kontrahenten Apple und Samsung ihre Position auf dem US-Smartphone-Markt weiter gefestigt. Die Situation ist zwar noch nicht die, dass bald ein Duopol entstehen könnte, aber trotzdem dominieren diese beiden Firmen den Markt. Zusammen erreichten die beiden Konkurrenten einen Smartphone-Marktanteil von 57.3%. Gemäss den Berechnungen von «comScore» besass Apple im vierten Quartal einen Marktanteil von 36.3%. Im Gegensatz zum Vorquartal wuchs der Marktanteil um 2%. Grund für die Steigerung des Marktanteils dürfte der Launch des iPhone 5 im September gewesen sein. Samsung konnte den Marktanteil ebenfalls steigern und kam im vierten Quartal 2012 auf einen Marktanteil von 21%. Dies entspricht einem Wachstum von 2.3% gegenüber dem Vorquartal. Offiziell: BlackBerry zieht sich aus Japan zurück

Es wird also wirklich keine BlackBerrys in Japan geben. Der Grund: keine Nachfrage. Es wird zwar weiterhin einen Support für bestehende User geben, aber neue Geräte sind dort nicht zu erwarten. Canalys: Apple rising in worldwide smartphone market
Following up on yesterday's breakout of US smartphone market numbers that saw Apple take the leading vendor role while the Android platform dipped slightly, research firm Canalys has published a report on the worldwide market that again shows the combined versions of Google's Android operating system losing some ground -- though still strongly dominant in the worldwide smartphone market. For Q4 2012, Android slid from 74 percent to 69.2, while iOS rose from 15 percent to 22.1 percent.

EA Launches Origin Online Game Distribution for Mac
A Mac client for EA's digital distribution platform Origin was launched today, as first noted by AppleInsider. Origin for Mac was originally announced in August 2011 and went into alpha testing in late January. Daily iPhone App: Zombies and Trains combine for gory fun
Zombies and Trains is the latest app from Dragonhead Games, an indie dev based in Norway. It's a zombie app (which is fairly meh these days), but it features a pretty inventive control scheme and a whole lot of content to play through.
The app is essentially an arena game, where you're presented with wave after wave of zombies, and then need to kill them off. Rather than using a gun or a hatchet, however, you use something a little more powerful: A freight train. Each area has various tracks running across it, and just touching one of those tracks will send a train rumbling through, demolishing any zombies who happen to be in the way. Adobe issues 'emergency' Flash update to stop new malware
Adobe has issued a patch to update Flash on both the Mac and Windows platform in order to fix two new vulnerabilities already being exploited "in the wild" to spread malware. One of the targeted attacks using the exploit works equally well against Mac users as it does against Windows users. Apple updates Digital Raw compatibility for iPhoto, Aperture
On Thursday, Apple updated its Digital Camera Raw Compatibility plugin for both iPhoto and Aperture to version 4.04 in order to include a number of recent camera models. The update adds three Leica models, four Pentax cameras and one Nikon and Sony model each. The update is available for Macs running either OS X Lion (10.7.5 or higher) or Mountain Lion (10.8.2 or later). The update is automatically available through Software Update, or users can download the 5MB file directly from Apple's Support Downloads page.

Judge invalidates 13 Motorola patent claims against Microsoft
Google's Motorola branch isn't having much success lately in getting patent claims to stick against Microsoft. A few months after the company dropped some ITC claims, the judge in a Seattle contract lawsuit has granted Microsoft's motion to invalidate 13 of Motorola's claims across three standards-based patents, all of them linked to H.264 video coding. First iOS 6.1.1 beta doesn't interfere with evasi0n jailbreak
If you've jailbroken your iOS device running version 6.1 of Apple's mobile software, it doesn't appear that your heart will be broken by the upcoming 6.1.1 release -- at least not yet. iTunes 101: Making playlists in iTunes 11
If you've messed around with iTunes 11 in default view, you'll notice that creating a playlist has changed. If you have the sidebar turned on to make iTunes 11 look like earlier versions, creating a playlist remains the same. But, if you have the sidebar turned off, you have the chance to use a dedicated area of iTunes just for making playlists.
To take advantage of it, turn off your sidebar (Option+Command+S or View>Hide Sidebar). Along the top bar of iTunes, you'll see a new playlist option. Select this.

Fund manager David Einhorn sues Apple, wants cash to go back to shareholders
David Einhorn is a fund manager at Greenlight Capital, and he's leading the charge with a lawsuit against Apple, claiming that the company hasn't done enough to make sure its shareholders receive the benefits of their success. Apple's been making plenty of money lately, of course, but Einhorn's problem isn't with the making, it's with what Apple is doing with that money. The company from Cupertino has built up a cash bank of nearly $100 billion, and investors have already made it clear they're not happy that Apple hasn't turned that money back into bonuses for shareholders.

Google to crowdsource Indian mapping data, offers swag to top contributors
What's the best method of finding your way in a foreign land? Just ask the locals, and that's exactly what El Goog is doing in India with its Mapathon 2013 competition. The contest is running from February 12th through March 25th, and is asking residents of the Asian nation to add additional detail or update information in Google Maps using Map Maker. Third Week of Apple's 'Get Stuff Done' Promotion Features Utility Apps [Mac Blog]
