Rage Software demos EasyWeb at Macworld: a modern replacement for iWeb
Apple's abandonment of iWeb has left a lot of would-be web admins unhappy. If you had a pre-Mac App Store copy of the app on DVD, you can still install it and even design sites, but some of the previous functionality and MobileMe iWeb publishing is gone. Rage Software is demoing EasyWeb at Macworld/iWorld 2013, an easy website design and publishing app that may be a worthy successor to iWeb.
Megan Lavey-Heaton and I took a look at a pre-release version of the app, which provides design flexibility that wasn't available in iWeb. Users can start with predesigned themes (a number of designers are working on themes for EasyWeb) or a blank slate.

Digital artists take the spotlight at the Nomad Brush booth
Mike Schramm looked at the Nomad Flex in October, and he liked it as a tool for aspiring artists to use. I stopped by their booth at Macworld/iWorld 2013 on Thursday, and a bunch of those aspiring artists were clustered around iPads to try the brush out. The US$29.99 Flex is the star of the booth, as it has a synthetic soft brush tip and comes in five colors. Along with all of the demo units, Nomad has also recruited a number of iPad-based digital artists to discuss their work this week in the booth.

Reality Absorption Field: Forms without Apple function
The last Reality Absorption Field discussed how CES is relevant to Apple -- mostly through major standards milestones -- even though the company doesn't attend the annual confabulation. But CES can also be seen as a mirror that is held up to the world of device makers, even those that don't attend CES.

Pixelmator's Shapes interface coming soon
Pixelmator is one of my favorite apps on the Mac -- I've been following it for a long time, and whenever I want to do any photo editing beyond a quick resize (and sometimes even when I want to do that), I click the Pixelmator icon in my Dock. Caturday: Actually, today is Macworld Monkeyday
It's Caturday, but we're also at Macworld/iWorld 2013, and it was the perfect chance to spotlight a special guest who made an appearance DreamWalk Interactive booth on the show floor: a capuchin monkey.
DreamWalk, the developers of Jam for iPhone, use a cartoon monkey as an avatar. They admit that show organizers told them they couldn't have the real flesh-and-fur monkey on the floor, but they decided to brave the wrath of IDG and show off their friend anyhow. We'll see how long this visit lasts.

Rostami Magic tries its hand at wowing Macworld crowds
Another thing I wasn't expecting to see at Macworld/iWorld 2013: a magic show. But that's just what I got when visiting Rostami Magic's kiosk at Appalooza this week. The developer was showing of its suite of magic apps for iOS and, unsurprisingly, an expo like this made an excellent venue for showing what they can do.
The US$2.99 iForce was up first. This app is billed as being able to make astonishing predictions and it delivered on the show floor. Designed to look like a drawing app, it lets you make predictions about various things -- someone's favorite food, for example -- which will be revealed when you turn your phone over. Java 7 Update 13 von Oracle freigegeben

Twitter warnt vor konzertierten Hacker-Angriffen, möglicherweise eine Viertelmillion Konten betroffen
Twitter ist von Hackern angegriffen worden. Wie das soziale Netzwerk in seinem Blog bekannt gibt, sind möglicherweise Passwörter und andere Informationen von 250.000 Nutzern gestohlen worden. "Die Attacke war nicht das Werk von Amateuren, und wir glauben nicht, dass es ein isolierter Vorfall war. Die Angreifer waren extrem raffiniert, und wir glauben, dass auch andere Firmen und Organisationen in letzter Zeit auf ähnliche Weise angegriffen wurden", schreibt Bob Lord, Director of Information Security. HTC bringt nach dem M7 wahrscheinlich zwei weitere Android-Smartphones

Wie die normalerweise recht zuverlässige Webseite @evleaks berichtet, will HTC nach dem Launch des M7 zwei weitere Android-Telefone auf den Markt bringen: das M4 und das G2. Das HTC M4 besitzt demnach einen 4,3 Zoll großen 720p-Display (wie das 8X), einen 1,2GHz Dual-Core Snapdragon-Prozessor, eine 13-Megapixel-Kamera (vermutlich die gleiche wie das M7) und wahlweise LTE. Nicht alles was einem vor die Linse kommt, befindet sich auch auf Augenhöhe. Bei manchen Digitalkameras hilft ein Klappdisplay, aber mit dem iPhone muss man vor Kindern oder Tieren meistens in die Knie gehen, um eine gute Aufnahme zu machen und sie währenddessen auch zu sehen. Smartphone-Verkäufe in den USA: Samsung macht im Weihnachtsquartal einen Riesensprung, Apple bleibt an der Spitze

Ein Schocker ist es nicht, was uns das US-amerikanische Marktforschungsunternehmen NPD Group verrät: Apple steht im Weihnachtsquartal mit 39 Prozent an der Spitze der Smartphoneverkäufe in den USA. Letztes Jahr waren es noch 41 Prozent. Samsung hingegen hat sich stark verbessert und springt dank der hohen Nachfrage nach dem Galaxy S III gegenüber dem Vorjahr von 21 auf 30 Prozent. Damit liegt Samsung im Q4 2012 hinter Apple an zweiter Stelle. Auf dem dritten Platz folgt Motorola mit 7 Prozent, während HTC und LG jeweils bei 6 Prozent liegen. Dijit acquiring Miso, plans to give you even more to do while you watch TV
Having already declared war on the grid, TV remote / guide app maker Dijit is taking GoMiso under its wing. The company announced via its site that it's in the process of acquiring the social TV developer. The move will incorporate more discovery into Dijit's offerings. Google Chromebooks now in 2,000 schools, usage doubled in three months

Ofcom mulls letting all UK carriers reuse spectrum for LTE
British regulator Ofcom gave EE special license to reuse 1,800MHz spectrum for its fledgling LTE network; to put it mildly, that rubbed other carriers the wrong way. The agency may be more open to a level playing field, as it's proposing letting everyone follow a similar route, and then some. Following calls from H3G (Three), Telefonica (O2) and Vodafone, Ofcom has offered to let all UK providers repurpose both their 1,800MHz airwaves as well as the 900MHz and 2,100MHz bands. Apple makes modest gains in Chinese phone share
A new study from Strategy Analytics says that Android continues to be the dominant platform for smartphones in China, with 86 percent of the market. However, Apple's share has risen from 7.5 percent a year ago to 12 percent at the end of 2012, and the December release of the iPhone 5 is expected to take further market share from Android in this quarter. Remarkably, only two percent of smartphones sold in China -- including "local" brands sold exclusively in China -- are anything other than Android or Apple devices.

For the first time, Apple has surpassed Samsung in quarterly US cellphone shipments, according to new estimates by Strategy Analytics. During the fourth quarter of 2012, Apple shipped roughly 17.7 million units, while Samsung shipped 16.8 million. Fifth-gen iPad could switch to iPad mini-style touch tech
The fifth-generation iPad will use the same G/F2 (DITO) thin-film touchscreen format as the iPad mini, claim industry sources for DigiTimes. The fourth-gen model uses a more conventional G/G touchscreen arrangement, but the sources suggest that Apple may feel it has enough supply of DITO to carry it over to the flagship iPad. The technology could help make the tablet even thinner and lighter than it is currently.

Path to pay $800K fine for collecting info from children
To settle charges of obtaining personal data from children without parental consent, Path has agreed to pay an $800,000 fine and set up a privacy program, the US Federal Trade Commission has announced. To comply with privacy concerns, Path will moreover have to get independent privacy assessments performed every other year for the next 20 years. Amazon, Best Buy offer discounts on MacBook Pro
Both Amazon and Best Buy are offering new discounts on the MacBook Pro. Best Buy's prices are part of a two-day sale, running today and Saturday. A 13-inch, 2.5GHz non-Retina Pro for example costs $1,050 at the retailer versus Apple's normal $1,199 pricetag. At the opposite end of the spectrum, a 15-inch, 2.6GHz Retina Pro is $199 below Apple's cost at $2,600. For any Pro, Best Buy is offering an extra $20 off if a person orders online but picks up at a store.

Oracle issues Java 7 Update 13 early to fix vulnerabilities
Oracle has released Java 7 Update 13. In an announcement, Oracle explains that the update was originally slated to go live February 19th, but that it was pushed out early because of "active exploitation in the wild of one of the vulnerabilities affecting the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in desktop browsers." In all the code fixes 50 security holes; 44 of these are said to have been browser-only.

Path app revised in light of new 'location tracking' issue
On the same day as the social and photo-sharing app Path agreed to an $800,000 settlement with the Federal Trade Commission over its surreptitious uploading of users' contacts without their knowledge last year, a security researcher discovered a "backdoor" way of obtaining the same data by reading the EXIF location embedded in digital photos even if "location sharing" is explicitly turned off. Path says it was previously unaware of the issue and has already updated its iOS app to close the loophole.

Patents, job postings hint of work on iLife, iWork apps
Recent job postings and the acquisition of enterprise-grade organizational software patents by Apple may suggest that work is underway on revamped versions of the programs comprising what Apple still calls the iLife and iWork suites. A necessary byproduct of living in the future ó as we do ó appears to be the occasional bit of tech that is simultaneously very cool and remarkably impractical.
