TUAW Sneak Peek: Avatron's supercool Air Login remote computer access

One of the great joys of blogging happens when developers give you an early peek at products under development. Steven Sande and I were lucky enough to join Avatron's beta test for their upcoming Air Login app. A direct competitor to LogMeIn Ignition, TeamViewer and other remote desktop apps, Air Login promises a thoughtful, well-designed take on the field. Like its competition, you install a server app on your home system. This app runs in the background, letting you connect remotely to home. Basically, you install the Air Connect software on your computer, the Air Login on your iPad or iPh

Sony rumored to be developing full-frame mirrorless camera, release could come in 2014

This September, Sony disrupted the point-and-shoot market with the announcement of a full-frame compact model -- the $2,800 Cyber-shot RX1. On the same day, the company shared news of its first full-frame HD video camera, the NEX-VG900, representing Sony's third imaging product line to pack the 35mm chip. Now, it looks like the Japanese electronics giant is fast approaching the industry's final frontier, with rumored plans to launch a full-frame mirrorless model in late 2013 or early 2014. Sony Alpha Rumors has reportedly confirmed the news with multiple sources, adding that the TB

Cycloramic spins your iPhone 5 by itself

Reader Jonathan H. just sent us word of a new app in the store called Cycloramic, and I just had to post about it right away because it's kind of blowing my mind. The app is available for 99 cents right now, and it's meant only for the iPhone 5, because here's what it does: When the app is run and your iPhone is placed vertically on a flat, smooth surface (like glass or granite), the app will make your phone vibrate in such a way that it "spins" around slowly. You can see it working in the video below, although the video's soundtrack of course doesn't reveal the phone's vibration element grinding itself away. I had to see this in action, so I downloaded the app for my iPhone 5, and sure enough, it works. The app will take a video, and you

Italian authorities fine Apple again over warranties

By now, Apple should be pretty familiar with Italy's standards regarding product warranties, but it seems that despite already being fined roughly $1.2 million, the company's troubles are not over. AppleInsider reports that after being hit with the fine, Apple continued to push AppleCare's two-year warranty in the region, rather than informing customers of the standard two-year warranty guaranteed by Italian law. For that, the Italian Antitrust Authority hit Apple with another fine of $264,000. Since its latest spat with Italian regulators in July, Apple has decided not to offer AppleCare in Italy at all, so it appears this final fine

Wall Street Journal selling subscriptions via Apple's Newsstand

The Wall Street Journal has joined thousands of newspapers and magazines that sell their content through the Apple Newsstand. The move of the Wall Street Journal to Newsstand is surprising for one reason -- the former president of WSJ owner Dow Jones, Todd Larsen, opposed selling subscriptions via the online news kiosk because Apple retains 30 percent of the subscription revenue and also controls all customer billing information. Larsen left the company last summer. The Journal is able to ask subscribers for their email addresses for marketing purposes, and it will also be able to continue to sell digital subscriptions through its own website. Some of the benefits that Wall Stree

Apple uses HTTPS in China, thwarts censors

Intentionally or not, Apple has made a switch to the hypertext transfer protocol secure (HTTPS) Internet communications protocol for the App Store. By doing so, the company has made it impossible for censors in China to block users from searching for certain types of apps. Before the change, searching for VPN apps -- which are popular with Chinese users for allowing access outside of the "Great Firewall of China" -- would cause connections to the App Store to reset. That kept Chinese users from being able to download such apps if they were available in the Chinese App Store. HTTPS keeps the Great Firewall of China from interrupting the connection to apps.

A new update for Maps on Windows Phone 8 has been spotted in the wild, and it supposedly improves the quality of, well, maps -- including those downloaded for offline use. Developer 11 bit Studios' Anomaly: Warzone Earth won an Apple Design Award for the way it looked and played, and as a rep from the studio told me recently, they decided to up the ante, adding even better graphics, with lots more flares, particles and other really great-looking visual elements. The core gameplay here is the same -- you're in charge of a

Facebook adds drag-and-drop photos, trials simplified Timeline and delivers new privacy controls

Anyone who's returned from an event with a virtual armful of photos may have been frustrated with Facebook's upload interface, which until now has involved a less-than-intuitive file browser. The company is quietly solving that problem: an update pushing out to individual users lets them drag-and-drop photos into a new post, like we've seen on other social networks, and to a newly streamlined Messages format that's rolling out at the same time. A much smaller circle is seeing a second update. Facebook has confirmed to ABC News that it's conducting limited trials o

How-to guide authoring app Snapguide finds itself on iPad

The iPad is great for lots of things that usually require lugging a MacBook (or real books) around, and reading how-to guides is one of my favorites. But what if you want to create your own guides that others tablet owners can use? iOS app Snapguide has been making that possible using an iPhone for a while, but now it's available as a universal version with an iPad-tailored interface. The app serves as a companion to Snapguide's website, letting users discovery guides created by others in addition to building their own. It allows favoriting, commenting and sharing via various social networks and sports a browsing interface that looks quite similar to Pinterest (which is itself a how-to guide aggregation site of sorts). You can download Snapguide

Rise Alarm Clock is lovely to behold and effective at waking you up

Some developers throw in a minimalist, gesture-based UI because it is trendy, while others use this style of interface because it works with their app. An excellent example of the latter scenario is Rise, a new alarm clock from Simplebots. Rise is a basic alarm clock. It only does one alarm at a time and doesn't have any fancy bells or whistles that turn your alarm into a challenge. It does one thing and does it well. When Rise opens, it takes over your entire screen, including the menu bar. You still have access to your notification slider, but every other distraction is hidden from view. Rise can pull this off because you really only need your alarm and some music to relax you when it's

Mac Game of the Week: Borderlands 2 gets exclusive content for the Mac

Borderlands was sort of a surprise from Gearbox when it released a few years ago: It's an action RPG game, in the vein of popular titles like Diablo, but instead of the form that genre usually takes, an isometric fantasy RPG, Borderlands successfully placed loot grinding and RPG progression into an open-world first-person shooter. That first game was a bit unexpected for everyone (including the developers), but Gearbox was ready for the acclaim with Borderlands 2. The sequel is better, bigger, shinier and even more fun. And now Borderlands 2 has made its way over to the Mac App Store, courtesy of ubiquitous Mac publisher Aspyr. The biggest drawback with this re

Yesterday, he recounted when during his time managing the web browser project he'd started at 1 Infinite Loop, he first heard the name "Safari" (about a month before it shipped in January 2003). But before then, he says, there were a lot of potential names for the browser, some submitted by Steve Jobs himself. Names such as "Freedom." Steve spent some time trying that one out on all of us. He may have liked it because it invoked positive imagery of people being set free. And, just as possible and positive, it spoke to our own freedom from Microsoft and Int

The commission's stance is that the injunctions may have run afoul of antitrust guidelines. Once Samsung has some time to review the specific charges it will be facing, the company will have a chance to plead its case in writing and request a hearing be held. The new version becomes the fourth beta of 10.8.3 and the third sent out so far this month. Given the identical release notes, it is possible that the new build simply fixes a discovered flaw or vulnerability in the previous build.
