Meanwhile, Playcast has been growing on its own, working on deals with US content distributors, and now the company is set to roll out its gaming platform Stateside early next year. We got a chanc

Voxeet, conference calling for iOS with some visual twists

The just-released iOS version of Voxeet is a free conference calling app, running over VoIP and interoperating with the company's Windows and Android apps. Voxeet is designed to handle conference calls in a unique way with excellent audio and some fun visual enhancements. Problem #1 on most conference calls is figuring out who's speaking. With Voxeet, you get an avatar with each participant on screen, (either generic or a picture from your contacts) and you see a little level meter bobbing up and down so it is obvious who is talking. You can arrange participants around a virtual table, and if you are wearing stereo headphones, the person on the left side of the screen will be audible in your left ear. That's a clever and useful idea. Calls

Review: Incipio Frequency for iPhone 5

Made of Incipio’s NGP rubber, these cases share the same overall structure: each wraps around and covers most of the body of its respective device, while leaving the screen and bezel exposed, surrounded by a protective raised lip. On the back they’re decorated with the same neat design that resembles bars on a sound meter, and a depression runs from the camera hole to the right edge, an element carried through many of Incipio’s current…

TweetDeck for the web and Chrome gains ability to embed tweets, not much else

TweetDeck today announced a new feature that may not nab it any design or productivity awards, but, still, it'll surely be appreciated by some power users of the Twitter-owned client. And while the ability to embed tweets isn't exactly novel at this point (Twitter's had it for many months), it's still nice to now have the option present on both the web and Chrome versions of the application -- which,

News: Report: Apple mulls upstate NY for manufacturing

And today, our Android-inclined brethren can get on board the Gyft train, as its headed to the Google Play store. I'll use a Twitter client, Apple's Mail or a calendaring app many times per day. By contrast I'll check the weather once, maybe twice at the most. Linux 3.7 arrives with broader ARM support, optionally signed kernel code

If you're the sort of Linux user who won't even wait for a packaged distribution to update, you'll be happy to hear that Linux 3.7 has hit the servers. The updated foundation puts ARM chips on a footing much closer to that of their x86 counterparts: the code now supports a true multi-platform model that will load on multiple ARM designs. It's also the first instance of Linux to natively support 64-bit memory for newer ARM-based hardware. No matter what circuitry you're running, there's also a big boost to security by allowing signed kernel modules that will only accept approved code, even if a curious user gains root access. There

Daily iPhone App: Zombiewood does dual-stick shooting right

Zombiewood is a dual-stick shooter released by Gameloft a little while ago, and while the dual-stick shooter is probably one of the most iterated forms on the App Store, there's enough style and polish here to give the game a look. It's available for free now, so there's not much to lose anyway. The core idea of the game is that you're an action star shooting zombie movies around various Hollywood locales, but of course that's just an excuse to throw the player in a variety of locations, along with a gun, infinite ammo and a horde of angry zombies. Each level has a series of different goals, from just killing all zombies to time limits or special collectibles, which provides a lot of replayability from session to session. And there a

Qualcomm attacks Apple, calls FRAND negotiations 'sham'

In response to some questions posed by the United States International Trade Commission (USITC), wireless baseband supplier Qualcomm has torn into Apple, saying that apple "should be embarassed" at the length and depth of its patent infringement. The move is curious, as Apple has been Qualcomm's largest customer for three years. Qualcomm and other stakeholders were encouraged, not required, to comment on a few questions the ITC Commission posed in an Apple versus Samsung complaint. Submitters were asked to remark on the availability of injunctive relief over standards-essential patents, and th

Intel's Penwell mobile processor given a close inspection, stuffs a lot into a little space

If you're one of those who took the leap into a first wave of Intel-based smartphones like the RAZR i, you're likely the sort to wonder exactly what makes them tick. SemiAccurate certainly does: it just posted some previously inaccessible diagrams that help reveal how Medfield's system-on-a-chip heart, Penwell, is mapped out. As a die shot shows, the Atom core is seemingly the least important part of the design -- the PowerVR SGX 540

Node gives your iPhone sensory input

Sensor technologies are all the rage right now, and for good reason. As a kid one of my favorite watches was a Casio with a temperature sensor in it, yet my iPhone 5 has to traverse a network of hardware devices to tell me the temperature, and even then the sensor is miles away. If we want our devices to be smarter, they're going to need more sensory input about our surroundings. I interviewed Dr. George Yu, the man behind the Node, a platform for sensory input which happens to work with iOS devices. Today there's news of the Lapka set of sensors for your iPho
