FT profile paints Apple's Jonathan Ive as 'very political'
The Financial Times has run a new profile of Apple's senior VP of Industrial Design, Jonathan Ive. Ive is often credited with the look and feel of Apple products; the Times comments, though, that Ive is "emerging from [Steve] Jobs' shadow," referring to the former Apple CEO's tendency to micromanage the details of products. An anonymous ex-Apple worker in fact tells the Times that Ive's "main talent was his ability to manage his relationship with Jobs."

US Army grants HP $249 million contract to deploy private cloud services
HP is in the Army now. Today, the Palo Alto company announced that it has received a $249 million contract to provide the Department of Defense and other federal agencies with enterprise level cloud computing services. The new initiative will allow the military to consolidate its existing data centers, and the services will be deployed to a number of commercial and government-owned buildings. HP will also provide the military with Performance-Optimized Data Centers (PODs) for quick deployment into tactical situations. Hands-on: Griffin IntelliCase with new iPad
MacNN has had an opportunity to test a Griffin IntelliCase ($60) with the third-generation iPad; while a case would normally warrant a full review, the current IntelliCase appears to be unchanged from its version for the iPad 2, so it was decided to do a capsule review combined with a simple test of how well the case fits with the new tablet. Shazam 5.0 for iOS touts one-second song tagging
Shazam in a large 5.0 update for its iOS title (App Store) revamped the engine for its audio detection. It now claims that the app can recognize a song or audio-cued TV shows in "as little as" one second. It can start listening as soon as it's open, making sure that the sampling gets in before the opportunity passes.

MetroPCS raises unlimited LTE data plan to $70, starts throttling others
Enjoying those quick, all-you-can-browse speeds on your LG Connect 4G? Well, it looks like soon you'll have to shell out a bit more cash to hold onto that beloved unlimited service. Motorola Xoom WiFi now seeing Android 4.0.4 update over-the-air
We'd been told it was incoming, and come it has. Those still in possession of Motorola's Xoom WiFi tablet can now look forward to another bragging right: Android 4.0.4. According to Droid-Life, the new Ice Cream Sandwich update is rolling out right now to select owners over-the-air, with the new code bringing quicker screen rotation, a new setting to "immediately lock the screen," improvements on the camera and a few other minor advancements. Shazam 5.0 update identifies audio in a split second, helps tortoise hands become the hare
Fits of inspiration are usually inopportune -- like when you realized eight years too late that it might've been wise to invest in Google. Facebook fights back, countersues Yahoo
Surprise, surprise, Facebook has decided to sling a lawsuit Yahoo's way after the latter first filed a patent infringement action against Zuckerberg's crew a few weeks ago. According to Florian Mueller over at FOSSPatents, the social network's alleging some IP infringement of its own -- alleging that Yahoo has run afoul of 10 of its patents. We haven't seen the complaint filed by Facebook just yet, but we'll let you know more after we get a gander at it for ourselves. Stay tuned.

Apple seen starting 15-inch MacBook Pro production mid-April
Apple is set to begin production of an updated MacBook Pro in mid-April, a DigiTimes report claims. Early shipments are expected to amount to 200,000 units per month. Mass production of 13-inch systems will allegedly have to wait until June, but with numbers starting at around 300,000 to 400,000 per month.

Dropcam ships smallest Wi-Fi monitoring camera
Dropcam, makers of the Echo wireless camera home monitoring system we had a chance to review earlier, has now shipped what it calls the smallest HD Wi-Fi video monitoring camera. The Dropcam HD is paired with a free Android (free, Google Play) or iOS (free, App Store) app that lets users see what it sees from wherever they are, as well as through any browser. ComScore: Android's US market share passes 50 percent, BlackBerry OS and WP7 slide
Another month, another round of ComScore's US mobile studies. For the three-month average period ending in February 2012, 234 million Americans age 13 and older were found to be using mobile devices, with Samsung having its products in the hands of 25.6 percent of the American mobile market. Behind it came LG (19.4 percent, dropping from 20.5 percent), Apple (13.5 percent, a 2.3 percentage point increase), Motorola (12.8 percent, down from 13.7 percent) and HTC (6.3 percent, a 0.4 percentage point increase).Overall, 104 million people were deemed smartphone owners, representing a full four million person uptick

iPhone, iPad owners use Wi-Fi more often than Android users
That's the word from comScore in a study that shows some interesting differences in Wi-Fi use depending on geography, platform and carrier.
A key finding is that iPhone owners tap into WiFi more than Android users. The study reveals that 71 percent of all unique iPhones used both mobile and Wi-Fi networks to connect to the Internet, while only 32 percent of unique Android mobile phones used both types of connections. A further analysis of this pattern of behavior in the U.K. shows consistent results, as 87 percent of unique iPhones used both mobile and Wi-Fi networks for web access compared to a lower 57 percent of Android phones.
There are some other interesting tidbits in the study. US AT&T users are far more likely than Verizon users to seek out Wi-Fi connectivit

Tim Cook's office helping people to unlock AT&T iPhones
Several more people have come forward to say that Apple CEO Tim Cook's office is helping people getting AT&T iPhones unlocked, according to 9to5Mac. A single incident was reported in late March, but 9to5 now says that a "significant number" of its readers have received help from Cook's staff. In particular, it says that "upwards" of six readers have been given exceptions by AT&T Partnership Operations after emailing Cook. The emails from AT&T tell users to tether their iPhones to iTunes to complete the unlocking process.

comScore: Android now over 50% of US share, iPhone over 30%
Android now makes up more than half of all smartphones sold in the US, comScore found on Tuesday. As of February, Google's platform had climbed to 50.1 percent, giving it an absolute majority of the country's smartphone share. Sprint LG Viper 4G goes on pre-order April 12 for $100, release date still TBA
Sprint's finally starting to get the ball rolling with its first LTE devices, announcing this morning that it's ready to begin pre-orders of the LG Viper 4G on April 12, and the next-gen goodness can be yours for $100 (after $50 mail-in rebate). The actual release date wasn't specified, but at least we know this means it's coming up much sooner rather than later. Shazam 5.0 offers faster tagging and startup
When you absolutely, positively need to know the song that is playing on the background soundtrack at the restaurant or club, Shazam (free) is the go-to application. The app "listens" to music, queries a database, and responds with information including the song's title, artist, and sometimes even the lyrics. TomTom confirms leap year bug is affecting a 'limited number' of GPS devices
Has your TomTom GPS let you down over the past few days? Then it looks like the company may have pinpointed your problem. It confirmed today that a leap year bug is preventing at least some models from obtaining a GPS position -- something that has apparently been occurring since March 31st. Exactly which GPS devices are affected isn't clear, with TomTom only saying that a "limited number of models" have been experiencing the problem. Google reportedly makes more per iOS device than Android device
According to Horace Dediu of Asymco, Google's smartphone revenue per year is on the rise. On the surface, this appears to be good news for Android, but a closer look at the source of the revenue shows that most of this increase is from iOS. In fact, Deidu suggests revenue per device from Android is slightly declining. If you are wondering, Google is making money because of its prime placement as the default search engine on the iPhone and iPad.
Dediu also notes that though the Android platform is sustainable from an economic point of view, Google is only getting US$1.70 annually per device, while Apple is making over $576 per iPhone sold.

LG LS831 goes back to FCC, reveals 5MP camera, Sprint intentions
Sprint's been kept pretty quiet on the Windows Phone front, but it looks like the Now Network is getting back into the game. Well, at least soon. The LG LS831 has made a return visit to the FCC, this time showing some visible hardware. That includes a Sprint-only 800MHz CDMA radio (with support for 1900 MHz), a front-facing camera and a 5-megapixel primary shooter on the back. Now that the FCC's given its nod of approval, we can start the guessing game for what Sprint will eventually christen the device.

RIM's server software now manages iPhone, Android devices
RIM launched its highly-touted BlackBerry Mobile Fusion today. The enterprise software solution lets network administrators manage iOS, Android and BlackBerry devices using a single, web-based application.
The software lets admins manage multiple devices per user, set and manage security policies, remote wipe lost or stolen devices and more. The app is free for companies to download and comes with a 60-day trial. Businesses that want the full product will be charged US$99 per user or $4 per user per month (billed annually).

Instagram reaches Android, we go hands-on
Instagram ended one of the more conspicuous gaps in Android's app library with its first Android version (Google Play). The new version brings most of the feature set of the most recent iOS version, including the same art filters, Lux image boosting, and support for both cameras when they exist. Court denies creditor demand to liquidate Proview Shenzhen
The Intermediate People's Court in Shenzhen has rejected a request to liquidate the assets of Proview Shenzhen, China Daily reports. One of Proview's creditors, Fubon Insurance, had previously filed several requests to have Proview's Shenzhen subsidiary liquidated. Although Proview is currently suing Apple, Fubon has argued that Proview won't make enough money to pay off its debts.

WD adds 2TB My Passport Studio drive just for Macs
Western Digital just added a new 2TB capacity for its Mac OS X-oriented My Passport Studio external hard drive range. EU launches antitrust probes against Motorola after complaints from Apple, Microsoft
Apple and Microsoft filed separate complaints with the EU that accuse Motorola of using its essential, standards-based patents as weapons to curb competitor's products and advance their own, says a report in The New York Times. Under EU law, companies with patents essential to an industry standard like 3G must license these patents under fair and reasonable terms.

Intel: Ultrabooks sind besser als Apples MacBook Air und iPad
In einem Interview mit PCWorld äußerte Intel sich über die aktuelle Situation im Ultrabook-Markt. Bestandteil der Unterhaltung war natürlich auch die Konkurrenz von Apple, in Form von MacBook Air und iPad.

BlackBerry Fusion goes live, administers Android and iOS too
RIM started its Tuesday by formally releasing BlackBerry Mobile Fusion. The remote administration tool is RIM's first truly cross-platform tool and both provides the expected oversight of BlackBerry phones and PlayBooks as well as Android and iOS devices. While not as in-depth as the BlackBerry support, it can manage app loadouts, check their location if lost, remotely wipe or lock devices, and determine what access users have to network assets like VPNs.

Apple sets date for Q2 2010 financial results call
Apple has announced the date of a conference call for its fiscal second-quarter, which ended in late March. The call will be held on April 24th at 2PM Pacific time, 5PM Eastern. The public will be able to listen in online using a Mac or Windows PC, or else an iOS device using iOS 4.2 or later. EU starts two investgations vs. Motorola over patent abuse
The European Commission quickly acted on earlier hints on Tuesday and formally started two antitrust investigations versus Motorola. The two pursuits will look into whether Motorola was abusing its standards-based patents against Apple and Microsoft. The claims would check whether Motorola was trying to squeeze Apple over 2G and 3G licenses for iPads and iPhones, as well as similar tactics over H.264 video in Windows 7 and the Xbox 360.

Canon returns to astrophotography with EOS 60Da
Canon on Tuesday updated its astronomy-friendly DSLR offering for the first time in several years by launching the EOS 60Da. The new version, a modification not seen since the EOS 20Da, takes the 18-megapixel camera and gives it both a changed infrared filter and improved sensitivity to hydrogen-alpha light. The upgrades give it about three times better performance overall for photographing a nebula cloud and other star formations.

Nokia preps Times Square kickoff for Lumia 900 in ad blitz
Microsoft posted word late Monday that Nokia will be holding a special event in New York City to formally launch the Lumia 900. Sync iCloud to Dropbox
Mac and iOS users are going to be increasingly pushed to choose between storing their documents in iCloud or Dropbox. I expect that Apple will continue to push more and more features to iCloud that will make people want to use it, and I expect that Apple will continue to make iCloud easier and easier for iOS and Mac developers to use, so developers will want to support it.
I like the idea behind iCloud, but I don't really trust iCloud yet. Apple's previous attempts at online services have left me suspicious about iCloud's performance, reliability, and long-term future. I hope I'm wrong and that iCloud turns out to be great, but in the meantime, I know Dropbox, and I trust Dropbox.

Report: Google TV coming to Europe in September
Sony is making some more definitive statements on its plans to bring Google TV across to Europe. According to financial paper, Les Échos, Sony France's marketing director said that two devices, a set-top box, priced at €200 ($266) and a Blu-ray player, selling for €300 ($399), will launch in France this September. The paper reports that it could launch across the UK, Spain and Germany at the same time. Sony's Stephane Labrousse added that remotes for the new devices would also include a dedicated Android Market Google Play button to access the Android progenitor's apps and media content. Streit ums iPad: Gericht lehnt Liquidation von Proview ab
Vor rund einem Monat sah es so aus als würde der Fall Proview vs. Apple, bei dem es um die Namensrechte vom iPad geht, kurz vor dem Ende stehen. Einer der Proview-Gläubiger forderte die Auflösung von Proview. Diese Forderung wurde nun vom Gericht in Shenzhen abgelehnt.
Als Begründung nannten die Richter laut China Daily (via The Next Web), dass es noch zu früh sei, um abschließend sagen zu können, ob Proview unfähig sei die Schulden zu begleichen oder nicht. Hierbei hatte das Gericht den aktuellen Rechtsstreit mit Apple im Kopf, bei dem es möglicherweise um Milliarden gehen könnte.

Mighty morphing hexapod bot is back, now rolls with the punches
It's been awhile since we last saw Kåre Halvorsen's morphing hexapod ball-shaped bot, and in the interim it picked up some new tricks. Before, the MorpHex could only maneuver by scurrying around on its six legs, but now it can move around while still in spherical form. It works by periodically protruding its polycarbonate panels to get rolling, and it stops and turns in similar fashion. After months in beta, Piriform has announced a formal release of CCleaner is available as a free download for the Mac, either via the Mac App Store or directly from Piriform itself. Facebook-App: Jetzt mit Unterstützung für iPad-Retina Display
Besitzer des neuen iPad können jetzt auch die Facebook-App in voller Retina-Display-Auflösung erstrahlen lassen. In einer neuen Version 4.1.1 unterstützt die App erstmals die höhere Auflösung des jüngsten Apple-Tablets, darüber hinaus gibt es einige weitere Neuerungen.
Beispielsweise können Benutzer sich nun aus dem Chat abmelden. Darüber hinaus haben die Facebook-Entwickler einige Bugs behoben: Die App sollte nun für jeden Benutzer das richtige Profilbild anzeigen, die “Freunde”-Liste sollte nun wirklich alle Freunde enthalten. Benutzer, denen eine Facebook-Seite “gefällt”, stellt die App nun ebenfalls mit dem richtigen Bild dar. Apple soll an Spiele-Controller für iOS-Geräte arbeiten
Der iOS-Spiele-Markt boomt: iPhone, iPod touch und iPad machen selbst Nintendo und Sony zu schaffen. Für Spiele einiger Genres ist eine Steuerung mit Touchscreen und/oder Bewegungssensor aber nicht ideal. Apple soll deswegen über die Einführung eines offiziellen Spiele-Controllers nachdenken.
Als Teil eines ausführlichen Tests des neuen iPad erwähnt die üblicherweise gut informierte Website AnandTech ein entsprechendes internes Apple-Projekt: Die AnandTech-Autoren Vivek Gowri und Anand Lal Shimpi erklären, dass Apple an einem physischen Controller für iOS-Geräte arbeite. Foxconn recruiter says 2012 iPhone coming in June
A recruiter for Foxconn's growing Taiyuan plant may have inadvertently spoiled some of Appe's 2012 iPhone plans. Android 4.0 jumps to 2.9% adoption, still well behind iOS 5
Google's latest Platform Versions data has shown a relative spike in Android 4.0 use. The current OS now makes up 2.9 percent of Android's active user base, or nearly double the 1.6 percent from a month earlier. It was now near even with all Android 3 versions combined, helped in part by both tablet upgrades and phones like the Galaxy Nexus sharing Android 4 as a common platform.

Path updates self-titled app, now hashing user data
Once the center of a firestorm of scandal regarding its collection of users' address book data without explicit permission, social networking app Path has announced that in order to further safeguard security, it will hash user contact data so that it is anonymized, according to a new blog post from the company. Google and Oracle fail to settle, go to trial over Android
Judge Paul Grewal signaled Monday that one last attempt at mandated settlement talks between Google and Oracle had failed. The two had encountered another "irreconcilable impasse" and wouldn't be attempting to negotiate a peace on the Android patent dispute before the trial started on April 16. In a memo, Judge Grewal gave an exasperated tone and concluded that the case would have to reach its final conclusion.
