Seagate hits one terabit per square inch, compares self favorably to the Milky Way

You know that big new hard drive you just picked up? Get ready to feel bad. Seagate today is talking up the fact that it has managed to cram one terabit (that's one trillion bits, for the record) into a square inch. That super-dense storage comes thanks to heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology, a successor to the perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) being utilized in current hard drives. Microsoft aiming for October 2012 release of Windows 8, tablets and PCs on deck

We knew good and well that Microsoft was aiming for a 2012 launch of its latest and greatest operating system, and if sources reporting to Bloomberg are accurate, it looks like we'll have a date with Mrs. October. Purportedly, work will wrap on Win8 this summer, with PCs and tablets (!) to ship in October carrying the newfangled OS. Foxconn won't sue over This American Life episode

Foxconn won't sue over the retracted This American Life episode painting a grim portrait of working conditions at the company, according to spokesman Simon Hsing. The storied past and changing future of encyclopedias on the Mac

It was with some nostalgia and sadness that I noted the death of the print edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica last week. It's yet another casualty of our rapid move to a digital world. The EB survived for 244 years, but interest was clearly not there for a set of books costing more than a thousand dollars that was out of date before it was off the presses. I started to think about the evolution of encyclopedias and remember all the CD-ROMS I had in the past that were filled with information and seemed such a wonder. My first memory is the Grolier's Multimedia Encyclopedia. It came out in 1987, a few years after the first Mac appeared. It survived through several editions, but was taken off the market in 2003.

AAPL closes over $600 for the first time: We respond with poetry

For the first time in history, or at least since Apple went public on December 12, 1980, AAPL has closed at over US$600 per share. The stock closed on the NASDAQ exchange at $601.10, up a whopping $15.53 (or 2.65 percent) on the day. Second OS X 10.8 preview includes location-based reminders

The second developer preview of Mountain Lion includes location-based reminders, notes 9to5Mac. While the Reminders app was already an integral part of Mountain Lion, the updated app lets users trigger alerts when leaving or arriving at a specific place. FAA vows rethink of rules on electronics during flight

The Federal Aviation Administration has issued a rare promise to reexamine its controversial device rules. Deputy Assistant Administrator Laura Brown explained to the New York Times that a "fresh look" was coming for rules that prevented device use during takeoff or landing. Halfbrick acquires Onan Games, Mandreel cross-platform software

Halfbrick Studios (the makers of popular iOS games like Fruit Ninja and Jetpack Joyride) has announced that it has acquired Spain-based studio Onan Games, whose main project is a system called Mandreel that allows developers to send their games cross-platform to places like Android and the Chrome marketplace, coming directly from the source code on iOS. Apple has added a new "Answers from the community" section to its product pages on the Apple Store. Something similar to this called "Questions and answers" has been around for awhile for accessories sold on the Apple site, but it's now been expanded to Apple's marquee Mac, iPad, iPhone, and iPod products. The purpose of "Answers from the community" is right in the name. Android study finds privacy and security risks related to in-app advertising

Android has certainly taken heat for malware-related bits in the past. EDGE Design has launched a second set of both the Aktiv and Alfa line of cases for the iPhone 4S and 4. Inspired by the Italian car design company Pininfarina, the cases are constructed from aluminum and feature an interchangeable color band. Tips: Apple sold 13,000 new iPads in half-day at 5th Avenue

Leaks on Monday may have given rare, early insight into the demand for the new iPad by narrowing it down to Apple's flagship 5th Avenue store in New York City. The store was said by The Verge's to have sold 13,000 iPads just by itself in the first 12 hours, or about 18 every minute. Sharp working to ship iPad displays 'as soon as possible'

Sharp is still trying to ramp up production of iPad displays, and is expecting to ship them "as soon as possible," according to sources for the Wall Street Journal. One of the sources elaborates that the first batch of third-generation iPads -- which shipped on Friday -- don't use Sharp LCDs, because the company had trouble customizing screens to meet Apple demands. F.A.A. might review policy on iPads and other gadgets during takeoff, landing

Whenever I travel by air, I always make sure that I have a clean, untouched crossword puzzle in the in-flight magazine before takeoff. Why? Because of the idiotic regulation from the Federal Aviation Administration (F.A.A.) that says that I can't use portable electronic devices during takeoff and landing. eSport Clip is an unbelievably cheap 4GB PMP with a 5MP camera

$22 -- seriously -- that's all Walmart wants for this 4GB PMP that sports a 1.8-inch color screen and a 5-megapixel camera. In what may be a watershed moment for in-home entertainment, both Kansas and Missouri have given Google permission to provide video services to Kansas City residents as a part of its Google Fiber project. European consumer groups in 11 countries -- including Italy and Germany -- have issued letters to national regulators, asking them to put a stop to the way Apple currently markets its warranties, Bloomberg reports. Seagate on Monday outlined a new technology that promised very high storage density. Continuing some of the more in-depth examinations of the new iPad, a detailed screen comparison at DisplayMate has shown a major improvement in Apple's tablet display quality, albeit at a cost. While the 2048x1536 resolution is an obvious advantage, the display analysis team saw that the new screen saw big improvements in other areas, most of all color accuracy. While the iPad 2's display got just 61 percent of the standard color range, the new iPad's screen was near-flawless, with 99 percent accuracy on top of "perfect" contrast and gamma levels.

EverQuest? More like Ever-cost -- until now that is. The popular subscription-based game has dropped the need for recurring charges as the franchise marks its thirteenth year on the scene. Apple to talk fate of $97.6b cash balance in Monday call

Apple in a rare mid-Sunday release sent word that it would discuss what it planned to do with its $97.6 billion cash reserve. CEO Tim Cook, along with CFO Peter Oppenheimer, would discuss the "outcome of the Companyís discussions" in a call at 9AM Eastern on Monday, March 19.
