Swimming robots break wave-powered distance record, don't even stop for high-fives
Remember those autonomous sea-faring robots we saw back in November? Well, it looks like their self-propelling paddles have slowly waded them into the record books. The bots have traveled a distance of 3,200 nautical miles (2,876 land miles), cutting the previous record of 2,500 adrift -- not bad considering there's no fuel involved. Sony applies for 'head control' patent to frustrate non-verbal communicators
The company formerly known as Sony Ericsson applied for a patent in 2010 that's yet to be granted, but you never know, one day it might wind up in a handset near you. Lenovo hoping to ship first-ever Windows 8 tablet in October
Lenovo could be the vanguard for Microsoft's Windows 8 launch, based on details that may have surfaced Thursday. The company supposedly intends to be the "very first" with a Windows 8 tablet and was anticipating launching simultaneously with an OS release in October, The Verge said. OnCue music player updated to version 5.0; total rewrite makes it awesome
Former TUAW contributor Dan Pourhadi has become quite the iOS developer, and his OnCue app (US$2.99) keeps getting more features and popularity with every revision. Archos ships G9 ICS tablet with Android 4.0 preloaded
Last week, Archos began rolling out Android 4.0 upgrades to its 80 G9 and 101 G9 tablet customers. This week, the company has begun shipping the premium turbo version of the 8-inch model with Android ICS pre-loaded. Walmart to begin selling third-gen iPad at 12:01AM
In an unexpected move, Walmart has announced that it will start selling iPads at 12:01AM on Friday. The retailer is promising only a "limited supply" of tablets; midnight launches are also being restricted to 24-hour locations. As with most retailers selling the new hardware, prices will start at $499 for a 16GB Wi-Fi model.

Throwboy's got a new pillow coming out soon, and as you can see above, it's in the shape of a plush Steve Jobs. I don't know -- some of you might say this is too soon after the late, great CEO's passage last October, but we certainly wouldn't have had a problem celebrating Steve in this way when he was alive, right? I figure that this man is an icon in every sense of the word, even the huggable ones.

OS X How To: Systemanwendungen entfernen – iTunes, Mail und Co.
Apple will mit OS X ein Betriebssystem schaffen, wo grundlegende Funktionen bereits implementiert sind. Standardanwendungen wie iCal, Adressbuch oder Mail erfüllen ihren Job sehr gut: einfach zu bedienen, und gut vernetzt durch das gesamte System.
Wenn jedoch bessere Alternativen im Mac App Store oder auf einer anderen Plattform gefunden wurden, könnte die Versuchung groß sein diese Standardanwendungen komplett zu entfernen.
MACBUG.de warnt ausdrücklich davor, Standardanwendungen gedankenlos zu entfernen. Seit OS X Lion ist es erheblich schwerer geworden diese einfach wieder zu installieren.

Apple answers Austin City Council questions to win funding
An Apple official today answered questions in front of Austin City Council in an attempt to secure funding for its expanded presence in the city. The Council is offering to pay $8.6 million in incentives over 10 years if Apple meets job and investment targets. Apple may also receive $21 million from the state-level Texas Enterprise Fund, and still more cash from Travis County, although county officials are believed to be waiting until after a City Council vote to say what it might contribute.

Leica preps May 10 event, may show M10
Leica CEO Alfred Schopf has sent out invites for an event on May 10 and 11 in Berlin, SteveHuffPhoto found. While there are no specifics in the invite (an image of which is embedded below), promised is a "whole range of product launches." Educated guesses, along with the date, suggest an M10 camera will be unveiled, while an update to the X1 is also expected.

Walmart to start selling new iPads at midnight local time
Well, it looks like you won't have to wait until 8:00am tomorrow to possibly get your hands on the new iPad after all. Walmart has now confirmed that it will begin selling the 16GB WiFi-only model tonight at 12:01am local time at all of its 24-hour stores. That includes both the black and white models, as well as the now $399 iPad 2 if the whole Retina display thing isn't for you. Of course, there's no guarantees that you'll get one if you show up, and Walmart is cautioning that it has a "limited supply."

Skyfire browser brings account switching to iPad with HotSwap
Skyfire is among the most popular third-party browser apps in the App Store, bringing quite a few solid browsing features that mobile Safari doesn't have to the iPhone and the iPad. I0n1c hints at iOS 5.1 jailbreak for the iPad 2
I0n1c posted up a few images to his Twitter account that supposedly show a jailbroken iPad 2 running iOS 5.1. This is only a proof concept that suggests the individuals working on the A5 jailbreak for iOS 5.1 are making progress.
This would be good news for iPad 2 and iPhone 4S owners, who had to wait months for a jailbreak of iOS 5. This time around, the A5 jailbreak may arrive days or weeks behind the non-A5 jailbreak. Late last week, the iPhone Dev Team released a version of redsn0w that supported a tethered jailbreak for all non-A5 iOS devices.

CalypsoPad is a rounded Italian leather rectangle measuring about 6” long, 3” wide, and just 1/8” thick. The material really is nice, as is the contrasting stitching around the edges. Sprint Galaxy Nexus gets approved by FCC, one step closer to daylight
The Samsung SPH-L700. PayPal Here takes on Square through iPhone, Android soon
As leaked earlier in the week, PayPal has unveiled its own direct equivalent to Square's reader. PayPal Here's triangular reader lets anyone with an iPhone take card payments and, as expected, PayPal payments. It claims an edge over Square in sheer variety of payment types, supporting options like debit cards, manually entered or scanned card info, and even check scanning in the US.

Briefly: Combat Mission coming to Mac, Pouge's Lion guide
Battlefront.com has announced the upcoming release of a Mac version of Combat Mission: Shock Force, its tactical ground combat simulation that includes both real-time and turn-based gameplay. The new Mac version is fully compatible with OS X 10.6 and higher, and includes the original base game as well as three expansion packs. Amazon Kindle, Evernote apps get iPad Retina support
Two popular iOS apps have just been updated to take advantage of the new iPad's 2048x1536 display. The Evernote (free, App Store) update to version 4.1.9 and Kindle (free, App Store) version 3.0 both have been upscaled for the greater resolution, though there are other changes too. The Kindle app also gets a new library design and a Cloud view that shows what content users have stored in the cloud and locally. The iPhone app will get a choice of a grid view, and the update is 18.3MB in size.

Protestors planning to be at Apple Stores again this Friday
TUAW has gotten word that protestors are planning at assemble at some Apple Stores in Washington, DC's Georgetown, New York City, and San Francisco this Friday, presumably in anticipation of the new iPad's release.
These campaigns are being run from Change.org by Mark Shields, who sounds reasonable in this video from CNN. Shields says he's an Apple fan who wants assurance that Apple isn't using underpaid and overworked Chinese laborers to make its products. There's a petition for the movement online, and it's been signed over 250,000 times so far.

PayPal unveils Square competitor 'PayPal Here'
Small businesses that are using PayPal to process credit cards but considering the Square service are in luck -- PayPal today unveiled a competitor to Square called "PayPal Here".
Like Square, the new service comes with a free card reader dongle. In this case, the card reader has been designed with a stabilizing "wing" that makes it much easier to swipe a credit card. PayPal notes that the reader comes with a free companion PayPal Here app that isn't in the App Store as of the time of publication. The iPhone or iPad that is used with the card reader needn't be online -- apparently the card reader can be used offline as well.

Amazon Kindle app updated for Retina display
Several of the reviews of the new iPad were critical of apps that hadn't yet been updated for the ultra-sharp Retina display. Piper Jaffray ups AAPL target to $718 on mobile markets
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has raised his price target for Apple stock, adjusting it from $670 to $710 on the basis of improved expectations for the tablet and smartphone markets. In terms of smartphones, for instance, Munster sees Apple selling 189 million iPhones in an overall market of 804.6 million units. That translates into a 23 percent share, higher than the 20 percent figure Munster was previously calling for. A long-term prediction calls for Apple to take a third of the market by 2015, amounting to 385 million iPhones.

Sony ships Bloggie Sport rugged, waterproof camera

iFixit tears down the third generation iPad
iFixit got its hands on a third generation iPad as soon as it went on sale in Australia today. As they boasted on Twitter, "the first legit-purchased, legit-owned iPad 3 is now also the first legit-opened iPad in the world."
The iPad 2 and the iPad 3 have different displays and the teardown analysis suggests the two devices have different display connectors. The model number on the retina display suggests this one is a Samsung-made LCD. There's also a beautiful shot of the A5X processor as shown above.

Phishing-Warnung: Packstation-Kunden aufgepasst
Wer dieser Tage eine E-Mail mit dem Absender sicherheit@packstation.de, sollte ganz genau hinsehen. Die Nachricht fordert den Empfänger auf, die Benutzerdaten seiner Packstation zu verifizieren, sie also erneut in ein Formular einzugeben. Die Daten gelangen jedoch nicht zu DHL, sondern in die Hände unbefugter Dritter.
Die mit vergleichsweise wenigen Rechtschreibfehlern durchsetzte E-Mail nimmt Bezug auf einen ominösen Newsletter 02/2012 und weist darauf hin, dass für neue Sicherheitsmaßnahmen, nämlich die Verifizierung mit einem Privaten Sicherheitsschlüssel (sic), die Bestätigung der Benutzerdaten nötig sei.

Apple to would-be iPad scalpers: don't queue up outside
To avoid the near riot that rocked the iPhone 4S launch in China, Apple is telling Hong Kong iPad scalpers that lines are not allowed, says a report from The Next Web. Apple's note confirms that it won't be selling the iPad on a first-come, first-served basis in Hong Kong this Friday. Instead, Apple will use a reservation system that requires customers to sign up in advance and show a government-issued photo ID before they can buy an iPad.

LG, Pantech, Samsung, Korean carriers fined for price fixing
South Korea's Fair Trade Commission issued across-the-board fines on Thursday to domestic phone designers and carriers for price fixing. IT ruled that LG, Pantech, and Samsung, as well as three dominant carriers KT, LG Uplus, and SK Telecom, had colluded on the prices of phones. The group was accused of artificially inflating the prices of cellphones, only to pretend they were offering a discount for what was supposed to be a less expensive device.

The truth in advertising is that there is none -- it's mostly all smoke and mirrors. But sometimes those illusory promises have real-world criminal intent behind them, like this latest ruling from the Korean government's corporate regulator. In a decision handed down earlier today, that governing body found mobile phone makers LG, Samsung and Pantech, in addition to operators KT, SK Telecom and LG Upius guilty of price fixing. JD Power: poor LTE battery hurting Android rating vs. iPhone
The rush to have 4G for its own sake has cost Android phone designers in the actual happiness their devices, JD Power found in its first phone satisfaction study of 2012. Those who had LTE devices, almost all of them Android, gave noticeably lower scores to battery life, at 6.1 out of 10 on average versus 6.7 for those on 3G. The added speed ended up itself compounding the problem, since they used their devices more often and cut the battery life short that much sooner.

Supplier pins new MacBook Pro in April with Ivy Bridge CPUs

In der vergangenen Nacht fiel das Embargo für die Reviews des neuen iPad. Viele US-Technologie-Seiten haben sich Apples neues Tablet zur Brust genommen und ihre Meinungen vor dem Verkaufsstart in wenigen Stunden veröffentlicht.
Hier jeweils eine kurze Zusammenfassung der jeweiligen Berichte. Die mitunter frohen Botschaften bezüglich Geschwindigkeit des LTE-Netzes haben leider für Deutschland und viele andere Länder keine Bedeutung. Bis auf Weiteres müssen wir uns im iPad mit UMTS/3G zufrieden geben.

Sonos picked Thursday to preview an imminent, major reworking of its desktop Controller app for the Mac and PC. Western Digital acted on a two-month promise by shipping its range-topping MyBook Thunderbolt Duo drives. The desktop external disks use the headroom of the 10Gbps spec, along with RAID, to supply speeds faster than most individual internal drives, even on a system like a MacBook Air. FaceTime not supported over LTE on new iPad
Reviews for the new iPad went live last night. While most reviewers were pleased with the tablet's LTE performance, there was one glaring omission. According to The Verge, the new iPad does not support FaceTime over LTE. Vergleich von iTunes-Videos in 1080p und Blu-ray Disc
Nachdem es bereits in der vergangenen Woche einen Vergleich zwischen den 720p- und neuen 1080p-Videos des iTunes Stores gab, kommt nun auch die Blu-ray Disc ins Spiel. Ob und wie iTunes-Videos mit den Videos auf der kleinen Scheibe mithalten können, untersuchten die Kollegen von Ars Technica.
Der Unterschied zwischen 720p und 1080p in der vergangenen Woche zeigte wenige Überraschungen. Wie zu erwarten war, brachte das neue Format einige Qualitäts-Verbesserungen in Apples Video-Welt.

FaceTime über LTE? Nicht mit dem neuen iPad
In einigen ausgesuchten Ländern unterstützt das neue iPad den Mobilfunkstandard LTE, der deutlich schnellere Datenübertragungen zulässt als UMTS/3G. In ersten Tests zeigte sich, dass Apple trotz hoher Bandbreite FaceTime-Verbindungen weiterhin nur über Wi-Fi-Verbindungen erlaubt.
Wie The Verge berichtet, ist der limitierende Faktor für FaceTime-Unterhaltungen nicht die Bandbreite, sondern sehr wahrscheinlich wieder einmal die Auflagen der Provider in den USA. Schon im Jahr 2010 hatte Steve Jobs persönlich darauf aufmerksam gemacht, dass man sich mit den Providern Einigen müsse, um FaceTime nicht ausschließlich über Wi-Fi nutzen zu können. Bis heute hat sich daran nichts geändert.

Apple has posted a trademark to cover the "Configurator" app that arrived in Software Update last week. The app allows users to configure (surprise) various iOS devices all connected to one computer or network, easily updating apps and the operating system, and even installing wallpapers or other information to a device's lock screen. The trademark covers the app, which Apple calls "Computer software used to configure multiple digital electronic devices." More third-gen iPad videos, photos appear on web

BBC's Director-General confirms instant video on-demand store is coming
Just last week, rumors regarding the BBC's purported iTunes competitor were making the rounds. Now, thanks to Director-General Mark Thompson, we can confirm that it is indeed in the works. Sparrow for iPhone goes live, overhauls iOS e-mail
Sparrow on Wednesday answered a long-standing request and posted its iPhone app ($3, App Store). The mobile version of the formerly Mac-only app brings in a pane navigation metaphor that both draws on apps like Facebook and Twitter; swipes bring in the main navigation for folders and labels as well as quick shortcuts to deal with individual messages. Shortcuts also see a pull down to refresh, swipes to quickly filter down to unread or favorited messages, and swipes to jump through a conversation.

Mozilla outlines plans for Firefox in 2012: less emphasis on version numbers, more focus on user experience
We've already seen Firefox move to a more rapid release schedule, and it looks like we'll soon also see far less emphasis placed on those rapidly increasing version numbers (much like Google has already done with Chrome). That's one detail revealed by Mozilla in a blog post today, which recaps its activity in 2011 and outlines some of its goals for 2012. The very first reviews have surfaced for the third-generation iPad and have provided an early look at the real-world experience of owning one. A look from Josh Topolsky at the The Verge showed that Apple was being honest with its claims of battery life while using LTE. Apple's stock, which has been steadily rising on the back of new product releases and the perception of the executive team as capable of carrying on, has achieved yet another milestone as of closing on Wednesday. RIM gets funky, patents fuel cell manufacture for mobile devices
If the engineers in Waterloo have their way, your future mobile handset may be able to recharge itself on-the-go with the help of fuel cells. A new patent from RIM describes a method of manufacture that sandwiches a fuel cell assembly between the keyboard and printed circuit board, wherein the fuel cell ventilates through the keyboard (and likely, channels in the keys themselves). Prestigio's Multi 9.7 Android 4.0 tablet has an IPS display, arrives in May for 199 Euros
We were so busy fondling gaming machines and touchscreen Ultrabooks at CeBIT last week that we missed that tablet you see up there. That would be the Prestigio Multi 9.7, which -- surprise, surprise -- sports a 9.7-inch display. What's intriguing to us (besides the fact that we're generally obsessed with this sort of thing), is that we don't see nearly as many budget 10-inch tablets as we do 7-inchers. Study: most users want 4 to 4.5-inch smartphone screens
The ideal smartphone's screen size for most prospective buyers is on the large side, Strategy Analytics determined from a study. Researchers talking to existing American and British owners found that the "sweet spot" for a phone was between four and 4.5 inches, as long as the phone was reasonably thin. About 90 percent of those asked chose a device larger than what they have, although the study didn't gauge how many would buy a larger phone if pressed.

If you haven't noticed, Apple's stock was soaring today. It closed at US$589.58, another all-time high, and is up +21.48 for the day. As financial analysts pour over these numbers, they are discovering some amazing trivia about this off-the-charts growth. Digital Camera RAW update for iPhoto, Aperture posted
Apple has posted an update for iPhoto '11 and Aperture 3 to add new camera compatibility. Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update v3.10 adds support for models from Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, Samsung and Sony and a total of eight new cameras. Notably missing from the list of compatible cameras is the Fujifilm X10, a well-reviewed mid-range camera we tested earlier this week.
