Amazon Publishing to sell series of ebooks outside the Kindle Store
It remains to be seen if it's a full-on change of policy, but it looks like Amazon is at least shifting it stance when it comes to where some of the ebooks put out by its Amazon Publishing division are sold. As you may recall, Barnes & Noble and other booksellers recently pulled print editions of Amazon Publishing books from their store shelves because the ebook versions were only sold in the Kindle Store, a stance that B&N said "undermined the industry as a whole." Apple may have second Ottawa retail store
Apple may be planning a second retail store in the Canadian capital of Ottawa based on commentaries and a recent retail shakeup. Bayshore Shopping Centre in the city's West end is known to be expanding from 67,000 to 100,000 square meters, and has been getting attention from "major" retailers that would take advantage of the extra space, the Ottawa Citizen said. While the Bayshore wouldn't officially comment, numerous general mall staff were certain an Apple store was coming.

Intel Ivy Bridge said still on track for late April
Intel's own claims that its Ivy Bridge platform had been moved back to June might have been unintentionally conservative. New leaks on Saturday to Digitimes had the 22-nanometer processors shipping in late April, setting them back only by a few weeks. As expected, the initial supply would be higher-end Core i5 and i7 processors.

Valve rumored prepping Steam Box, tackling Apple TV too
Valve Software is entering the console race by developing its own hardware platform, new rumors brought up early Saturday. The approach outlined by The Verge would have typical PC hardware with a Core i7, 8GB of RAM, and NVIDIA graphics, but it would serve as a fixed platform for three to four years. Developers would then target their games to the system, which as expected would use Steam as its primary way to get games.

Google Assistant may become semi-open equivalent to Siri
Apparent new leaks have suggested Google is developing a very broad, multi-platform alternative to Siri. So far called Assistant, the concept TechCrunch saw would translate Google's search content into a "personalization layer" that would understand the relationships between data points. A voice-based recognition engine would, like Apple's system, focus on returning a key useful result or accomplishing a task, not just pushing a raw list of results.

Bei vielen Titeln ist es mittlerweile üblich, dass man, auch wenn sie noch nicht spielbar sind, bereits vor der eigentlichen Veröffentlichung mit dem Download beginnen kann, um den Ansturm am Tag der Veröffentlichung abzumildern und den Spielern die Möglichkeit zu geben, gleich einzusteigen. Die Webseite Ars Technica hat in ihren Logs 365 Besucher entdeckt, die mit einem Gerät mit einer Auflösung von 2048 x 1536 Punkten unterwegs sind, also mit derselben Auflösung, die auch beim iPad 3 erwartet wird. Dabei muss es sich zwar nicht zwingend um die nächste iPad-Generation handeln, es ist aber sehr wahrscheinlich. Apple verkauft 18.000 iPads an US Air Force
Für insgesamt 9,36 Millionen US-Dollar will die US-amerikanische Luftwaffe bei Apple einkaufen und seine Militäreinheiten mit bis zu 18.000 iPads ausstatten. Für Apple ist dies der bislang größte Deal mit der US-Regierung. Mit Hilfe der iPads plant die US Air Force ihre umfangreichen Fluginformations-Handbücher zu ersetzen. So können auf den Flügen Papier und Gewicht gespart werden, außerdem sei es leichter, die Informationen aktuell zu halten. Das “Air Mobility Command” hat hierzu die Sicherheit der iPads geprüft und für ausreichend befunden. Im Test waren hierzu seit 2011 eine Handvoll der Apple-Tablets.

Am 6. März 2008 stellte Apple seinen App Store vor. Seitdem können die User von iPhone, iPods und iPads in dem Online Store Applikationen für ihre iDevices downloaden. Authorities decrypt laptop without defendant's help, Fifth Amendment need not apply
Constitutional junkies have had their eyes on Colorado for awhile now, because a federal judge there ordered a woman to decrypt her hard drive in a criminal trial. This, despite her cries that doing so would violate her Fifth Amendment right to be free from self-incrimination. The argument is now moot, as authorities have managed to access the laptop's data without any aid from the defendant, thereby obviating any Constitutional conundrums. Who knows if the feds found the evidence of bank-fraud they were looking for, or whether it was brute force or a lucky guess that did the trick, but at least we can say it's the last

App Store knackt 25 Milliarden Downloads
Der Zähler läuft rasant weiter, aber ein großer Meilenstein ist geknackt. In der Nacht von Freitag auf Samstag erreichte der App Store die Marke von 25 Milliarden Downloads. Smartphones spread out: Pew says 46 percent of US adults now own one
Our master plan is slowly working, and soon every man and woman in our great nation will own a smartphone. Pew Research Center reports that just under half of adult Americans, or 46 percent, own smartphones currently, meaning that smartphone owners now outnumber their feature phone counterparts by five percent. Pew polled multiple demographics to get its numbers, and there was growth across the board over the last nine months. Der App Store von Apple hat in der Nacht zum Samstag den historischen Wert von unglaublichen 25 Milliarden Downloads erreicht. Der Gewinner des 10.000 US-Dollar-Gutscheins für den App Store wird noch bekannt gegeben.

Apple gestaltet Yerba Buena Center für iPad 3 Keynote
Nachdem Apple Anfang der Woche Einladungen für eine Veranstaltung in San Francisco am 07.März 2012 an ausgewählte Presseleute versendete, war unter Berücksichtigung der aktuellen Spekulationen und Gerüchte klar, dass es sich dabei um die Keynote zum iPad 3 handeln wird.
Am kommenden Mittwoch wird Apple demnach die neue Generation der erfolgreichen Tablet-Reihe der Öffentlichkeit präsentieren. Die Vorbereitungen zur Keynote haben aber schon begonnen. So schmückt der IT-Konzern aus Cupertino traditionell auch dieses Mal den Veranstaltungsort des Presse-Events mit hübschen Bannern.

BlackBerry PlayBook outsells iPad at Canadian stores
RIM posted word that Best Buy Canada and its sister chain Future Shop had seen the BlackBerry PlayBook become the top-selling tablet at their stores this week. Neither store was reporting by how much, but they implied that the tablet had outsold even the iPad. No mention was made of overall performance in the country.

YouTube Android app update brings HD video streaming to 'capable' 2.2+ devices
Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich Android-running hardware has had access to HD resolution YouTube streams since launch (as seen above), but an update to the app that rolled out yesterday finally brings HD to some devices running Froyo or Gingerbread. The catch is that YouTube HD res won't work on every Android 2.2 or 2.3 phone or tablet, as we're told it is set dynamically based on screen size and resolution. Another quirk is that some devices still won't install the updated version directly from the Market, like our Epic 4G Touch. Nintendo says it refuses to 'succumb to patent trolls' as it wins Maryland case
Nintendo issued a fairly terse press release earlier today, announcing that it has prevailed in a US patent lawsuit for the "third consecutive time this year." That particular case concerned Nintendo's Wii Balance Board accessory and Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus software, which a company called IA Labs said infringed on one of its patents (No. 7,121,982); a claim that was dismissed by the Maryland District Court judge in the case. Apple inadvertently confirms Gorilla Glass still in use
A perhaps-inadvertent byproduct of Apple's touting of its US job-creating numbers in a new "Job Creation" promo page that launched earlier today is an acknowledgement of the company's apparently-ongoing relationship with Corning, a US company that makes the Gorilla Glass found in iPhones, iPads and now many other brands of smartphones, tablets, notebook computers and TVs. The admission makes it likely that Apple will continue to use Corning glass, perhaps the upcoming Gorilla Glass 2 in future products.

Aspyr has announced that its Mac port of Company of Heroes is now available for purchase. The real-time strategy game is set during World War II, and has players fight across Europe as members of Able Company. Company of Heroes can be downloaded through the Mac App Store and the online GameAgent store for $50, which includes the game's original campaign as well as additional single-player levels from the expansion packs Opposing Fronts and Tales of Valor. ITC to review its decision on Microsoft, Motorola patent case

An anime-inspired, turn-based MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) called Wakfu has launched in North America for Mac, Windows and Linux. The game is set 1,000 years after the events of another MMO called Dofus, and continues with the same main villain and classes, though almost everything else has changed over time. Apple wins ad standards conflict over Siri in the UK
When the iPhone 4S and Siri first arrived in the UK last October, carrier Vodafone created a website ad that promoted the features of Apple's intelligent assistant. The ad touted (among other things) that Siri "can even use information from your iPhone -- such as your location, contacts and contact relationships -- to provide intelligent, personal assistance." ITC to review decision Motorola violated Microsoft patents
Microsoft faced a major setback in attempts to pressure Android supporters after the International Trade Commission agreed to review a decision that Motorola violated a Microsoft patent. Southeast regional US carrier C Spire has unilaterally dropped the price of an iPhone 4S by $50 across all three models with a two-year plan, making the 16GB model as low as $149. iPad 3 prices, capacities rumored staying put
Rumors that the iPad 3 might get a price hike were theoretically debunked in a form of counter-rumor on Friday. Prices are expected by a familiar 9to5 source to be the same as they are for the iPad 2 despite the anticipated 2048x1536 screen, faster processor, and upgraded camera. Talk of cutting off a 64GB model and possibly adding an 8GB iPad 2 were tossed aside as well, with at least the iPad 3 still sitting at the 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB capacities of today.

Apple name-drops Corning as iPhone glass manufacturer, we feign surprise
For a company so focused on secrecy, Apple never really did all that good of a job keeping its connection with Corning under wraps. We've always suspected that the company enlisted the Gorilla Glass maker for the iPhone, though it didn't really go out of its way to admit it -- even going so far as omitting the New York-based company from its 2011 suppliers list. Camera Awesome for iPhone has some clever features for a mostly free app
Camera Awesome is a nicely appointed, just released free app for the iPhone from photo sharing site SmugMug. In many ways it goes beyond the built-in camera software Apple offers, and I think many iPhone users will find it useful. It does a lot of things faster than Apple's software, and supports timed shooting with up to a 60 second delay, a rapid burst mode (at a slightly lower resolution), and a slow burst mode. It has pretty effective image stabilization, and a variety of processing options, filters and frames to enhance your photos. It also shoots video in addition to still photos.
