Smart Audio sues Apple, Creative, Philips over car sound

Mostly unknown Smart Audio Technologies has hoped to skim profits from the audio industry after filing a low-key lawsuit late last week that was publicized Tuesday. The Delaware-based complaint accuses Apple, Creative Labs, and Philips of violating the same February 2001-era patent for car audio system with a random access player that supports playlists. Smart Audio isn't clear what products are violating its technology, although iOS and iPod devices are possible candidates.

Evi is the sort-of Siri clone. The $0.99 iPhone app is aimed mainly at people who don't have an iPhone 4S and want a Siri-like voice control experience. When I tried Evi some weeks ago it was a complete disaster. In a week of testing I could not connect once because of server issues. Apple now almost 50 percent of mobile industry revenue

Looking at fourth-quarter results, Apple now represents almost half of cellphone/mobile computing industry revenues, and over 80 percent of its profits, says Morgan Keegan analyst Tavis McCourt. Apps have created 466,000 U.S. jobs in four years

Apps for mobile devices are a surprisingly robust source of jobs in the United States, according to research from TechNet. Since 2008, apps have created 466,000 American jobs. TechNet estimates that about 155,000 of those tech-related jobs are related to app development and tech support, while the remaining 311,000 jobs also require tech skills but include things like app marketing and art design. Of those jobs, the highest percentage (23.8 percent) of the total are located in California. Chrome Beta for Android hands-on (video)

So, Google is finally making the move we've been expecting for some time now and bringing Chrome to Android. Now, you'll need a device running Ice Cream Sandwich to get the new mobile browser up and running but, thankfully, we happened to have a Galaxy Nexus on hand. As you might expect, mobile Chrome (much like its desktop sibling) is fast -- a little buggy perhaps, but fast. It isn't, however, the fastest browser for the platform. Alien Skin Software has announced that Exposure 4, the latest version of its photography effects plug-in for Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, and Photoshop Lightroom, will launch this month. Buffalo Wild Wings expands iPad pilot program

Buffalo Wild Wings is expanding a pilot program to put iPads in its restaurants. Initially the the effort began at a location in Toronto, Canada, but it is migrating to a restaurant in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where each table will have an iPad allowing people to not only place orders, but browse the web. AT&T launches U-verse app for iPad as a secondary screen

AT&T has now released the U-verse iPad app (free, App Store), meant as a companion to the TV watching experience. U-verse TV subscribers can get extra information and bonus content through the app on the TV show they're watching, such as photos, cast and crew data, similar shows, a synopsis, and more. Apple in China: Entscheidung um Strafzahlung noch im Februar

Proview Technology hatte Apple bereits im Jahr 2010 verklagt. Dies begründete das Unternehmen damit, dass Apple den Markennamen iPad in China nicht nutzen dürfe. Proview claims possible $38M fine in Apple lawsuit

A lawyer for Proview Shenzhen, Xie Xianghui, is claiming that a court in the Xicheng district of Beijing is prepared to "slap Apple with a 240 million yuan ($38 million) fine," according to the Global Times. Schließlich berichten Blogs gerne über solche iPhone-Filmchen, richtig? Ja, leider erwischt. Mehr Aufmerksamkeit hätte Alfa Romeo jedoch ergattert, wenn man jene Szenen im Video gelassen hätte, in denen der Alfa nach seinen “Drift-Stunts” in die Bande kracht. Canon brought Wi-Fi to its point-and-shoot cameras for the first time on Tuesday. Mac OS X 10.7.3 graphics fuel rumors of high-DPI Mac screens

Skulking in Apple's Mac OS X 10.7.3 update has raised possibilities that Apple's on-again, off-again high-DPI support may be more established in the final version. Art assets found for mouse pointers by Marc Edwards both look different and scale to large sizes without the usual pixelated look. One claim had a Mac mini using HDMI kick into the normally hidden HiDPI mode after 10.7.3 was installed.

VP of iPhone and iPod David Tupman quietly leaves Apple

Apple's Vice President of iPhone and iPod Engineering David Tupman quietly exited the company at the end of 2011, sources say, and a replacement has not yet been named. Tupman, who reported directly to Senior Vice President of Hardware Bob Mansfield, has not updated his LinkedIn profile to reflect the change but is said to be taking up with a new startup operation. Apple is seeking a replacement for Tupman within its own ranks.

Daily iPad App: Monster Wars is a great addition to Legendary Wars series

I first saw Monster Wars a little while ago at Macworld as Liv Games was just publishing it, but the title has been out for a little while now and I've had a little longer to play with it. Monster Wars is not only another huge content pack for Legendary Wars, with tons of new stages, modes and units to play with, but it is a nice iteration on the series as a whole, with a lot of subtle but solid improvements to the gameplay. Apple agrees to compensate customer over iMessage flaw

A flaw in the iMessage protocol that causes it to continue to route messages to an iPhone even after its SIM has been removed and deactivated has gotten the attention of Apple in a very direct way: a customer demand to be compensated for the problem, which the company has allegedly done. The pros and cons of making a digital jump with comics

Anime News Network did an in-depth comparison of reading manga on an iPad vs. a Nook Color today, after Viz Media sent them both devices so they could do a hands-on look at making the digital jump. After taking a hit from the closing of Borders, Viz decided to turn its popular Shonen Jump publication into a digital-only product. Launched in January, Weekly Shonen Jump Alpha is $25.99 for an annual subscription, with three of its flagship series -- One Piece, Bleach and Naruto -- now running almost concurrent with the Japanese release. Individual issues can be rented for 99 cents for a 4-week period.

Full Nikon D800 photos slip out ahead of unveiling

The Nikon D800 has had much of its mystery taken away after a leak of details and photos through Brazil. The full-frame DSLR will shoot at 36.3 megapixels, ZTOP saw, and will take a very different approach than the 16-megapixel D4. In return for more than double the resolution, it would have a smaller normal ISO sensitivity range of ISO 100 to 6,400 and a lower maximum ISO as a result, most likely the 25,600 of the D700.

Apple could be forced to stop selling "iPads" in China

Stick with us on this one -- it seems unlikely, but this case could have some wider consequences. Last year, Apple filed a lawsuit against a company named Proview Technology Shenzen in China. It was pretty common by Apple's standards: The company was using the name iPad, and Apple was trying to keep them from doing so. While this was all going on, Proview Taiwan (only loosely affiliated with the Shenzen division) sold the trademark to "iPad" in China to a UK-based company named Application Development, which then sold it right back to Apple. I've talked quite a bit before about the growing "second screen" phenomenon, where iPads and other mobile devices are used as a second screen while either working on another computer or watching television. Apple 'macroscalar' US trademark hints at looming chip tech

Apple late last week quietly filed for a US trademark that shows it possibly getting closer to having its own chip architecture. After having slowly filed trademarks in countries outside the US, such as Trinidad and Tobago, the joint USPTO and Hong Kong application caught by Patently Apple suggests that Apple has been continuing development on a project it could be willing to show soon.
