Apple's Q1 hardware sales: 37 million iPhones, 15.43 million iPads, 5.2 million Macs, 15.4 million iPods
We touched on the numbers in our report on Apple's Q1 earnings, but the company's throwing out a lot of "record" figures and we thought we'd take a moment to focus on just how its hardware sales stack up. The standout figure is, of course, the 37.04 million iPhones sold during the quarter, which is up 128 percent from the same quarter a year ago (and up from 17 million in the previous quarter, a jump of 117 percent). Q1 2012 results breakdown shows big leaps in US, Japan
Coming alongside the formal announcement, Apple has published a detailed breakdown of its Q1 2012 financial results. The Americas and Japan saw the biggest regional surges in revenue, with the former up 92 percent year-over-year to $17.714 billion, and Japan up 148 percent to $3.55 billion. Europe was up 55 percent to $11.256 billion, while the Asia-Pacific region rose 54 percent to $7.697 billion, helped partly by a 58 percent surge in Mac sales to 814,000. Worldwide retail revenue grew 59 percent to sit at $6.116 billion.

Daily iPad App: The Bard's Tale
The Bard's Tale was originally released on Microsoft's first Xbox console, and it was a sort of a side-make of the original point-and-click RPG adventure game from the 80s (which itself is represented on the App Store by an app called Silversword, if you'd rather go even more old school than this one). iBooks Author sees 600,000 initial downloads, 3 million for iTunes U app
Apple announced on their quarterly earnings call this afternoon that iBooks Author had seen 600,000 downloads since its unveiling last week. The folks in Cupertino also mentioned that iTunes U has seen 3 million app downloads, also feeling a bump from the announcement a few days ago. Apple announces Q1 2012 earnings, sells a record-breaking 37 million iPhones
Apple released its earnings statement and announced yet another banner quarter. Apple knocked it out of the park, with record quarterly revenue of US$46.33 billion compared to $27.64 billion in the year-ago quarter. As predicted, iPhone sales were through the roof with 37.04 million units sold. This is up from the 17.07 million the company sold last quarter and up 128 percent from the 16.24 million it sold this quarter in 2010. iPad sales were also up to another record-breaking level. The company sold 15.43 million iPads units, which is up from the 11.12 million iPads the company sold in Q4 2011. iPod line experiences major decline year-over-year
Apple has just posted its first quarter fiscal 2012 results. (There is a live conference call to follow). One of the biggest items to pop from the press release is the status of the iPod. Apple announces Q1 earnings, sets quarterly record with $46.33 billion in revenue
It's that time folks: time for the quarterly running of the spreadsheets. Today Apple, one the most anticipated of all, is revealing its earnings for the past three months and let's just say things are lookin' pretty good for the Cupertino crew. The company set a new record for quarterly revenue and profit in Q1 of 2012, netting $46.33 billion in total with $13.06 billion earnings. That's nearly twice what Apple announced for the same time period last year -- $26.74 billion and $6 billion, respectively. Magnetic soap could make your next oil spill less oily
Instead of spending millions upon millions to clean up the next oil spill, why don't we just all pitch in and buy some soap? That's basically what researchers at the University of Bristol are proposing, with a new kind of soap that's apparently like no other. This soap, you see, is magnetic, which means it could be easily removed from water without leaving behind any hazardous chemicals -- a potentially major selling point for cleanup crews and environmentalists alike. London to get more spectrum, Tube Wi-Fi for Olympics
Two organizations are working to brace London's mobile data networks for the expected impact of the summer Olympics this year. Regulator Ofcom has planned to increase the amount of available wireless spectrum for 3G in the city. Among the efforts, it plans to borrow airwave access from government bodies like the Ministry of Defence, to exploit unlicensed bands, and to use frequencies going up for auction but which won't be used until 2013.

MSN UK puts out news app for iPad
MSN in the UK has added its own news app for the iPad. The MSN UK App brings to the tablet current news, sport and entertainment articles, and videos (free, App Store). Siri clone Evi is off to a very bad start
Siri has been a big hit for Apple, but as we all know, it runs only on an iPhone 4S. I've been expecting some Siri knock-offs to appear, and now one has that can be used on any iPhone and even the iPad if you don't mind not seeing it full screen. The app is called Evi by True Knowledge. It's US$0.99 and runs on any iDevice with iOS 4.0 or greater. "Run" is a bit of a misnomer. Evi's speech recognition is powered by Nuance, just like Siri, and the recognition part is first rate. But that's where the good news ends. Sony reminds Japan that Walkmans still exists, new E series packs built-in noise cancellation
The latest addition Walkman series continues the petite styling we've seen over the years, and Sony's cheerleading that it's both thinner (9.1mm) and lighter (37g) than its predecessor. T-Mobile tries to steer unlocked iPhone users to '4G' phones
A leaked strategy document from T-Mobile has shown TMoNews that the carrier is actively trying to discourage the large number of unlocked iPhones on its network. Incorrectly referring to the devices at the "iPhone 4G" and "4G S," the staff memo insists that T-Mobile users are getting a "poor" experience by being on the carrier's EDGE (2G) network. Moving to one of its '4G' phones like the HTC Amaze 4G or Radar 4G will be free them from being "stuck in the 2G slow lane" with Apple's device.

Laurene Powell Jobs to attend State of the Union address
Steve Jobs' widow, Laurene Powell Jobs, is on the official guest list for tonight's State of the Union address by US President Barack Obama, according to the White House. She will watch the speech from First Lady Michelle Obama's box in the House of Representatives. Time Warner Cable's app goes universal
Time Warner Cable released an official iOS app early last year that let subscribers watch live TV. Despite some early issues with channel agreements, the app is still going strong, and appears to be popular with customers. Audiobooks.com tries $25 unlimited subscription plan
Audiobooks.com is hoping to shake up the e-book field by trying a business model similar to Netflix or Spotify just for its namesake audiobooks. A $25 flat rate gives access to the full catalog of 11,000 audiobooks, many of which are from major publishers. Like with other such services, continued access depends on a sustained plan, but it's potentially more economic for those who read two or more books every month.

Gartner announced today that Apple became the world's biggest buyer of semiconductors in 2011, leaping ahead of both Samsung Electronics and Hewlett-Packard. Apple HQ includes secret room devoted to packaging
Somewhere in Apple's Cupertino headquarters is a room dedicated exclusively to product packaging, and the experience of unboxing, Adam Lashinsky's upcoming Inside Apple reveals. An excerpt from the book notes that the room is walled off in the company's primary marketing building, and requires a badge to get in or out. Workers are claimed to spend substantial amounts of time opening boxes, to the extent that one packaging designer spent months opening hundreds of prototype iPod packages, trying to fine-tune the concept.

UK Greenlights first marine-energy park in the heart of Brunel-country
The West Country is home to some of the finest engineering anywhere in the UK, thanks to the region's historical patronage of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. That reputation will continue thanks to the Department of Energy and Climate Change naming it as the home of the nation's first marine energy park. Danish carriers claim iPhone-like demand for Lumia 800
New reports from Danish carriers have suggested that the Nokia Lumia 800 may be experiencing iPhone-like demand. Talking to Mobilesiden, local telecom leader TDC's Morten Steen Jensen claimed to have seen the same kind of demand as for the iPhone 4S. Microsoft drops MIX, plans one major 2012 dev event
Microsoft platform evangelism GM Tim O'Brien in a blog post said his company was dropping another major event, MIX. At least the 2012 developer show would be cancelled in favor of one, monolithic developer event "sometime in the coming year." Here's an interesting stat: As compared to the global average, professionals in Africa are actually twice as likely to get offered an iPad by their employers. Forty-seven percent of respondents to IDG's latest survey revealed that they own an iPad issued to them by their employer. The global average, according to the survey, is 24 percent. That sounds high to me, but then again it just means that IDG likely interviewed people already in corporations more likely to give out iPads. Apple Stores are now selling an average of $4,709 in goods per square foot, an amount nearly equivalent to the value of the White House, says real estate site Zillow. Long-term estimate: ultrabooks to grow 3X rate of tablets
A new Juniper Research prediction made the claim that ultrabooks would rapidly close in on, but not overtake, the lead established by tablets. It's hard to believe that 28 years have passed since the Macintosh was introduced by a young, bowtie-clad Steve Jobs, on January 24, 1984. It was Apple's annual stockholder meeting and Jobs (and his Macintosh crew) were going to unveil the Macintosh to the public. It was a magic moment aptly described by Andy Hertzfeld on the Folklore website. Even back then Steve was a showman, unveiling the Macintosh from underneath a bag. Study shows iPhone 4S customers' buying habits
If you recently bought an iPhone 4S, chances are you sold an older model iPhone to fund that purchase. You also probably stayed on your current carrier and purchased the lower capacity models. These trends are gleaned from a Consumer Intelligence Research Partners survey conducted in October, November and December of 2011. The Haus of Meg will pay $425,000 in order to settle a claim that it consciously flogged laptops with batteries that could overheat or catch fire. Apple has become the biggest semiconductor buyer in the world, having spent $17 billion on chips in 2011, says Gartner. Google hat bei seinem Frühjahrsputz anscheinend auch den Source Code von seinem webbasierten App Inventor wiederentdeckt und nicht aussortieren wollen: die Ich-klick-mir-eine-Android-App-Zusammen App wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit dem MIT entwickelt und ist jetzt unter dem etwas sperrigen Namen MIT App Inventor zu einem Open Source Projekt geworden. Brother expands number of AirPrint-compatible printers
Brother has expanded the number of its printers supporting Apple's AirPrint standard. Now included are a handful of all-in-one color inkjets: the MFC-J280w, MFC-J430w, MFC-J625dw, MFC-J825dw, and MFC-J5910dw. AirPrint allows an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to send content directly to a printer over Wi-Fi, rather than rely on a custom app, a card transfer, or sync with a computer.

Tipping Point's Pwn2Own security contest is changing its methodology in a way that could break from "sensationalist" headlines, the company's security team lead Aaron Portnoy explained. When it takes place at CanSecWest in March, the hacking competition as explained to PC Advisor would partly switch to an on-the-spot contest where teams didn't have to have ready-made hack by the time they got to the show. iPhone propels Verizon to best net subscribers in 3 years
Verizon on Tuesday posted a rare loss for its fall quarter despite an otherwise upbeat result defined by the iPhone. Apple on Tuesday lost its appeal to try to include the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in a partial, preliminary Samsung device ban in the Netherlands. Shifting from software to hardware, the court decided that the Android tablet could only be compared against an early design Apple registered in 2004 and not the original iPad of 2010. Dies bedeutet: In einem Kreis von etwa 50 Metern Durchmesser befinden sich der Taxihalt, Flughafeneingang, Checkin-Schalter, Gate-Eingang, Sicherheitsschleuse, Warteraum und Zugang zum Flugzeug über einen “Finger”. Binnen fünf Minuten ist man aus der Taxe gefallen, hat Checkin und Sicherheit passiert und befindet sich im Warteraum. Bei der Landung ist es ähnlich: Nach der Landebahn folgt eine kurze Kurve, der Finger wird angedockt und wenige Minuten später startet die Gepäckausgabe. Hacker developer Nick Frey is now offering a utility forjailbroken iPhone 4S models that extends Siri slightly, allowing users to speak commands beginning with "open" or "launch" to allow Siri to launch programs (even "webclips") or execute system commands such as "unlock" (if password protection isn't on) and "reboot." Colorado federal Judge Robert Blackburn on Monday set a precedent with an order requiring that a woman decrypt data on the hard drive of her Toshiba Satellite M305 notebook by February 21. Virgin America airlines has christened one of its Airbus 320 aircraft with a saying quoted by Steve Jobs (originally taken from The Whole Earth Catalog) as a way of honoring the late co-founder of Apple. True Knowledge has developed a voice command app that promises to beat Apple's Siri in key areas. Evi on iOS (99 cents, App Store) and Android (free during beta, Android Market) can answer typical Siri quesitons, such as restaurant recommendations, but specializes in answering answering the less immediate questions that would normally have Siri perform a generic web search. Fake 'Camera+' app found on App Store, pulled
While Apple screens submitted apps for "reliability, technical, content and design criteria" according to its own developer page, the company does not yet seem to have found a foolproof way to prevent "counterfeit" apps from gaining approval. Avatron is a company well known for their iOS and Mac utilities. We are particularly fond of their Air Sharing apps and Air Display, among others.
