AT&T to adjust data plans January 22nd, offers more gigs for more money

Good news and bad news here, folks: the good news is that AT&T will begin offering new data plans with a higher monthly allotment. The bad news is that, once again, it's going to cost you more. The plans, which will offer 300MB of data for $20, 3GB for $30 and 5GB (including mobile hotspot access) for $50, will take effect beginning this Sunday. Are you still on one of the older plans? Fortunately, you're still grandfathered in and won't have to change unless you absolutely want to. But remember that once you move to the new data rate, there's no going back; the only legacy plan sticking around is AT&T's 250MB tablet feature fo

AT&T hikes data plan prices, caps

AT&T in a surprise step Wednesday increased its mobile data plan prices with cap changes to match. New customers will pay an extra $5 per month on plans but will get more data depending on the plan they use. Basic Data Plus users get the least increase, moving from 250MB to 300MB per month with $20 the new baseline; the more common Data Pro plans are now $30 and $50, but supply 3GB (up from 2GB) and 5GB (up from 4GB).

Kodak sues Samsung in last-gasp patent dispute

Kodak showed the mounting extent of its troubles Wednesday by suing Samsung over camera patents. It accused the Galaxy Tab designer of violating five patents for "electronic camera" technology, such as capturing photos during previews and transferring them online. Nokia asked to cut Lumia 800 price to prop up slow sales?

Nokia may have been asked to cut prices on the Lumia 800 to shore up poor performance in stores. Apparent leaks on Wednesday from a pair of sources to the Financial Times asserted that carriers wanted the suggested cost to run lower so they could put the flagship Windows Phone on lower monthly tariffs. Nokia had originally asked for the phone to be sold on £25 ($39) plans, but carriers wanted it on the £20 ($31) closer to budget plans.

Apple textbook effort codenamed 'Bliss,' based on Gore book?

Apple's digital textbook project is internally codenamed "Bliss," an AppleInsider source claims. The site says it actually received the tip earlier in the week, but it wasn't until a Wall Street Journal report corroborated some of the details that it decided to publish the information. Check Point: iOS outpacing BlackBerry in corporate data use

A new study from Check Point on Wednesday hints that iOS use may have pushed past the BlackBerry in at least one metric for corporate use. Among the device types connecting to 768 IT pros' networks in the US, 30 percent said the most common was one of Apple's mobile types at 30 percent. Just slightly less, 29 percent, pointed to the BlackBerry as the most common, while only 21 percent were pointing to Android.

Google brings Orkut social network to iPhone

Google has introduced an iPhone app for Orkut, one of the company's lesser-known social networks. ASUS MeMic hits the FCC, reminds us of its existence

Remember the ASUS MeMic? It's okay if you don't -- after all, it's been nearly a year since we first saw the thing. But the transparent-screened handset that takes calls for the Eee Pad MeMO appears to have reared its little head over on the FCC's site. No word on whether this is the same MeMic we saw so many moons ago or an updated version, though the above image does look a fair amount like the rear of the device we saw back in February. Japanese automaker Nissan has applied its self-healing paint technology to an iPhone case. The first-of-its-kind case in tribute to its Juke crossover was created with the help of the University of Tokyo and Advanced Softmaterials. Nielsen: iPhone 4S launch was "enormous"

With all the lines here in the US and overseas, we knew the iPhone 4S was going to be a tremendous hit. Now, a Nielsen survey from December gives us some numbers to support this observation. According to the survey, 44.5 percent of smartphone buyers bought an iPhone in December. This number is up from the 25.1 percent who bought an iPhone in the pre-4S month of October. It's also remarkably close to the 46.9 percent who bought an Android device. The majority of buyers (57 percent) chose the iPhone 4S over the iPhone 4 or the 3GS. Virgin Media suffers three hour outage days after announcing super-fast broadband

Less than a week after announcing it would double customers broadband speeds nationwide, Virgin Media suffered a nationwide blackout that sent the network dark for most of Tuesday evening. At 5:00, the service dropped after router hardware decided it couldn't go on streaming the same episode of The Jeremy Kyle Show to the nation. The company admitted to the fault and service was restored by 8:00pm. New fast Fourier math could give image compression 10X boost

MIT researchers have put forward a paper for a new approach to fast Fourier transform math that could provide a major lift to image compression and other signal processing technology. The new technique, discovered by associate professor Dina Katabi and professor Piotr Indyk, divides signals and looks for "sparse" but strong frequencies within each section of the signal. Since it would only need to sample random details from those sparse signals instead of full details, it could speed up the processing time by as much as ten times, MIT said.

We've already seen some rumors about what Apple has in store for its education-minded announcement in New York City tomorrow, and now Bloomberg is out with a report of its own that backs up some of those earlier rumblings and offers a few new details. Apple's education event in New York City -- scheduled for tomorrow -- will place an emphasis on growing the educational materials available for the iPad, particularly for K-12 students, say two Bloomberg sources claimed to have "knowledge of the announcement." Analyst forecasts 48 million or more iPad shipments in 2012

Apple should ship 48 million or more iPads in the calendar 2012 year, according to estimates from Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu. The catalyst will allegedly be the iPad 3, predicted to be a "significant refresh" that should "help further differentiate from arguably the only real competitor in the market, Amazonís Kindle Fire, and not to mention the myriad of Android offerings out there," according to Wu. Oracle: each day of Android makes Google $10m per year

Oracle has put out an unofficial estimate of Google's possible damages claimed it was making over $10 million a year from each day it sells Android. Going from Google mobile VP Andy Rubin's claims of 700,000 activations per day and assuming $14 in ad revenue from each device, Oracle assumed Google was making eight-digit revenue just from ads alone, according to a copy of statements obtained by Florian Mueller. EU to decide on filing Google antitrust case by late March

EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia in a discussion late Tuesday raised the possibility that a formal antitrust dispute with Google could start in late March. He informed Reuters that comments from investigators would come in near the end of the quarter, which ends that month, and that he didn't "expect anything sooner" for a full complaint. Apple hat den Sprung in die Top 10 der wertvollsten Marken geschafft. Das IT-Unternehmen konnte seinen Markenwert in den letzten 12 Monaten um satte 58 Prozent auf 33,5 Milliarden Dollar steigern. Das US-Beratungsunternehmen Interbrand hat zu Wochenbeginn eine Rangliste mit den wertvollsten Marken der Welt veröffentlicht. Dabei wird Apple auf dem 8. Platz geführt und verbesserte sich um neun Plätze, wie die Abbildung verdeutlicht. RBC ups Apple stock target to $525, expects $40B in revenue

RBC analyst Mike Abramsky has raised his firm's target for Apple stock from $500 to $525. Apple is forecast to beat Wall Street consensus in its Q1 results, which are scheduled to be announced January 24th. Dish open to being bought, buying others

Dish in responses to speculation has said it's open to deals that might see a carrier deal. CEO Joe Clayton disclosed to Bloomberg late last week that the company "could be acquired or could be the acquirer" and was willing to entertain options. While a spokesman wouldn't address speculation about carrier acqusitions, Clayton had previously remarked that Dish would be willing to talk to T-Mobile and possibly other carriers.

Nielsen: iPhone 4S leading to Android share loss

The sustained effect of the iPhone 4S is triggering a decline in Android's US market share, Nielsen showed Wednesday. Although Android had an average 51.7 percent share for the fall among recent buyers, a month-by-month breakdown by the researchers showed that OS share among recent buyers dropped from 61.6 percent in October to 48.7 percent in November as iPhone sales traffic picked up. By December, Android and iOS were near even, at 46.9 and 44.5 percent each.

Nielsen: Android still top dog, but Q4 buyers preferred iPhone 4S

Nielsen crunched Q4 numbers today, and the results will likely have Apple analysts jumping up and down. The findings, focused on those who've purchased a smartphone within the previous three months, indicate a huge spike -- from 25 percent in October to 45 percent in December -- in iPhone purchases since October as an obvious result of the launch of the 4S. According to a Bloomberg report, Apple filed a new lawsuit in Germany that targets ten of Samsung's Android handsets. Samsung wasn't interested in buying RIM, still isn't interested in buying RIM

Samsung already passed on webOS, and now, it's passing on RIM. The flagging handset maker was reportedly in talks with Samsung about a buyout, but according to a fresh Reuters report, Sammy's "not interested" in taking over Research In Motion. Apple ends $100 printer promo; solves code signing issues

As of today Apple has put a stop to a $100 printer rebate offered alongside new Macs, says 9to5Mac. The information comes from a leaked internal support document. The memo does note, though, that people still have up to 90 days after their original date of purchase -- the last eligible date being January 16th -- to submit a rebate. "An additional 30 days will be given to correct invalid claims," Apple offers.
