Samsung preceded CES with a pair of audio docks aimed both at its Galaxy S smartphones and, ironically, iOS devices. The Audio Dock with Vacuum Tube Amplifier, or the DA-E750, mixes both a digital amp and a vacuum tube pre-amp for what it hopes is a mix of accurate sound with warm tones. Samsung is also promising full wireless support for its own Android devices as well as iOS, including Apple's AirPlay, Samsung's AllShare (DLNA), and Bluetooth.

Boston schools producing iPhone apps

Readers who went to college in the pre-App Store days will likely remember what it was like to receive a college brochure when they were shopping for schools. It was so exciting to thumb through the pages of a bright and colorful brochure which was printed on thick, glossy paper. In the next several years, these brochures will become obsolete. Gradually, schools will use an iOS app or other digital media to both compete for prospective students and engage current students. BostInno, an online blog covering the city of Boston, took a look at iOS apps for several Bean Town colleges and universities including MIT, Babson, Berklee College of Music, Boston College, Boston University, Harva

Developer pairs robot with gaming controllers for remote cat grooming, affection expression

You could take the time to make your cat feel loved. Or you could augment a robot to do it for you. Software engineer Taylor Veltrop has accomplished this by combining a 21-inch-tall Nao robot, a few Wiimotes, a Kinect sensor bar, a treadmill and a head-mounted display. The configuration, which represents about a year's work and several thousand dollars in parts, uses the Kinect and Wii remotes to control the robot's arms, the sensor bar and treadmill to provide movement and the head-mounted display to move the Nao's head and adjust its camera angle. This is still a work in progress, and doesn't inclu

Microsoft 'kills' IE6 use in the US, celebrates with cake

Microsoft's hopes that Internet Explorer 6 would die were partly validated after the company's Roger Capriotti noted that the decade-old browser had been reduced to irrelevance in the US. Working from data at NetApplications, he declared IE6 over as it made up just 0.9 percent of all American web traffic. The US was late, having been preceded by parts of Europe and Scandinavia, but was coming at the same time as the Czech Republic, Mexico, the Philippines, and others were also dropping below one percent.

The Amazon Kindle Fire might have poached one million to two million iPad 2 sales during the holidays, Morgan Keegan analyst Travis McCourt argued. He lowered his expectations for Apple's tablet shipments from 16 million to 13 million on the assumption that Amazon's $199 tablet was drawing away the more cost-conscious buyers. McCourt based it in part on Amazon's own claims, which he saw as leading to between four million and five million Kindle Fires trading hands.

Galaxy Note gets early CyanogenMod 9 port, for those in a rush (video)

We'd like to think that ownership of a Galaxy Note reveals something about a person's approach to life: they jot stuff down, they're organized, and -- above all -- they don't procrastinate. In which case, this first glimpse of an Android 4.0.3 CM9 ROM for the Note should go down well, even if it's only an experimental build and Sammy's official ICS update is just around the corner. You can clear your diary and download it now, or you can wait for a stabler build with better camer

We've been (somewhat) taken with Nintendo's dual-screen handheld's 3D screen, AR features and overall unique experience, but it appears that the 3DS has been a real boon to gamers, with more than four million U.S. consumers picking up the console since it hit stores in March of last year. 3DS games like Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7, which sold more than one million units each in the US alone, were also incredibly popular, along with the aging Wii, which made its way to 4.5 million additional U.S. households in 201

2011 has only just ended, but I have a sneaking suspicion that even when we look back on it in another 12 months from now, we'll find a pretty revolutionary year in terms of the quality and quantity of our shopping. For example, UI expert and project leader Luke Wroblewski has compiled a list of facts about shopping during the holiday season last year, and the list provides a lot of solid insight on just how different 2011 was. Online buying was up both on Christmas Day and during the holiday season as a whole, and a large percentage of that buying was done with mobile devices. Over 90 percent of mobile device shopping was done with iPads and iPhones, making 2011 a really landmark year in how we use these devices to make purchases an
