Osmos for iPad: TUAW Best of 2011 game winner

We've got another winner! TUAW readers have spoken, and Osmos for iPad (US$4.99) was voted the best iPad game of 2011. Pulling in 31.1 percent of the votes, Osmos for iPad edged out Words With Friends HD ($0.99), which came in second place with 26.9 percent of votes tallied. Osmos was named iPad Game of the Year by Apple as well, so it's well-deserving of the title. Last-minute: iPhone 4S $50 off at Radio Shack

Google Health's New Year's Resolution is to cease to exist, countdown begins to save your data

Back in June, Google announced that it would be 'retiring' Health effective January 1, 2012. Now, everything appears to be on-track for the shutdown, with Google sending out a final reminder to Health customers earlier today. Google pulls one Siri clone Android app, leaves another

Google has partly reacted to the presence of cloned Siri apps on Android by pulling one of the titles. The "Siri for Android" app has been quietly pulled from Android Market about a day after it was first discovered. The developer, operating under the deliberately misleading company name Official App, has also had its only other app, a fake Pinterest app that only linked to the website, pulled from the store.

Google, Facebook, YouTube, Apple: Nielsen listet die digitalen "Tops of 2011"

Filed under: Companies Die Informationssammler der Firma Nielsen haben ihre US-Bestenliste für 2011 veröffentlicht. Große Überraschungen bleiben aus: Die Top Web-Brands dominiert Google, gefolgt von Facebook. Allenfalls verwundert, dass sich Yahoo auf dem dritten Platz halten konnte. Die Smartphone-Liste wird von Apple mit 29 Prozent Marktanteil angeführt, an zweiter Stelle steht HTC. RIM hatte ein schwieriges Jahr, ist aber dennoch Nummer Drei. Bei den Top 10 der Social Networks & Blogs macht Facebook das Rennen. Und dass YouTube die Video-Sparte beherrscht, bräuchte man eigentlich gar nicht zu erwähnen. Das Dilemma der ZEIT-App

Als vor einigen Wochen die neue ZEIT-App veröffentlicht wurde, freute ich mich sehr. Seit Erscheinen des iPads wartete ich auf eine zu dem Gerät passende Möglichkeit, die ZEIT lesen zu können. Der Spiegel hatte vorgemacht, wie gut man eine gedruckte Ausgabe auf dem iPad anbieten kann. Doch die ZEIT-App enttäuscht. Sie hängt in der Vergangenheit fest und hinkt der Website hinterher. Doch beginnen wir am Anfang: Die ZEIT-App macht zunächst alles richtig: Aufgeräumtes Layout, gut lesbares Schriftbild, vertikale und horizontale Darstellung, viel Weißraum, ein übersichtliches Inhaltsverzeichnis, eine “Meine ZEIT” genannte Merkliste für Artikel, Lesezeichen, Suche über alle Artikel, vollständige Offline-Fähigkeit usw. Rumor: iPhones made up 66 percent of AT&T December sales

The iPhone was the runaway hit of the Christmas season at AT&T if a source quoted by Mac Observer is credible. The report claims that iPhones outsold all combined Android phone offerings at the carrier from Dec. 1st to the 27th by nearly a factor of eight, totalling some 981,000 units compared to Android's 126,000. The report may be skewed in its sampling, however, and its claim that basic "feature" phones sold slightly more units (128,000) than all Android phones combined is dubious at best.

Lakeshore Learning is well-known for its excellent educational supplies, and now the company is making a name for itself in the iPad market with a trio of outstanding learning apps. A story that MacNN and most other tech-news sites carried a few days ago about a government ban on iPhones and Blackberry models in Argentina may be plausible, but is at present not true, reader reports suggest. Verizon announces then kills extra $2 fee to pay bill by phone or online

Good news for iPhone owners on the Verizon network. A day after announcing a plan to charge customers a $2.00 fee for telephone and online bill payments the plan has vanished without a trace. Could it be the announcement today from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission today saying it was going to look into the fees on behalf of Verizon customers? Kodak loses third director in a week as patent war founders

Kodak saw its hopes of bouncing back fade on Friday after it filed twice with the SEC to say three board members had resigned. Adam Clammer and Herald Chen were reported as having left on Tuesday, while Laura Tyson was now known to have left as of the Friday release. Court orders Apple to change appeal, delays Samsung case

The Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC) has ordered Apple to change aspects of its appeal in its case against Samsung, whom it alleges has copied its designs, according to Foss Patents. Apple is appealing the decision handed down by Federal Court Judge Lucy Koh in October, which blocked its desire for the court to issue a preliminary injunction banning the importation of certain Samsung mobile devices. Apple sends takedowns to stop pirate-friendly iOS apps

Pirate app haven Apptrackr revealed in an update for its Installous app installer that Apple has been cracking down on its bootlegs. "Huge" volumes of takedown requests have made it move servers to areas with looser copyright laws and impose Captcha checks to avoid the legal ramifications of direct links.
