Japanese vending machine doubles as WiFi hotspot -- no purchase required
It looks as if facial scans for snack-dispensing purposes isn't the only mind-blowing feature on the whiz-bang generation of vending machines. Japanese company Asahi has just unveiled an advanced dispenser that's capable of doubling as a WiFi hotspot, so good luck getting through the mobs of leechers just to buy a soda. The machine sends out the internet waves free of charge and covers about 164 feet around it; of note, there's a 30-minute limit on each session -- but it's nothing that a fresh login can't solve. Minor redsn0w update includes launchctl fix
The unofficial iPhone Dev Team has posted a minor update of redsn0w, its popular jailbreaking utility for iOS devices. The v0.9.10b2 update incorporates a launchctl-related fix on top of the base v0.9.10 release, which was published earlier this week as one of the first tools allowing untethered jailbreaks for iOS 5.0.1. Google's Andy Rubin deletes post touting Android as open
Google's mobile VP Andy Rubin has raised questions after he deleted the Twitter post touting Android as open. Posted as a response to the late Steve Jobs' assertions that Android openness is disingenuous, it showed the ability to compile an Android kernel and make a custom build. It's not clear when Rubin took the post down or why.

Windows Phone Marketplace hits 50,000 app-submission milestone
Just over one month after crossing the 40,000 app-submission threshold, Microsoft's Windows Phone Marketplace has hit another milestone: 50,000. According to analyses done by All About Windows Phone, the Taj Mahal of tiles has seen developers submit just over 50,000 applications for review -- 42,655 of which are currently available in the United States. What may be more telling is the rate at which developers are submitting their wares. China rare earth export cut may keep tech prices up
China, which is responsible for 97 percent of rare earth materials, has announced it will cut its exports to try and bring up dropping prices of the metals. The Commerce Ministry said exporters will be allowed to sell 10,546 tons of rare earth metals during the first half of 2012, which marks a 27 percent decrease from the first half of 2011. The decision, like similar ones before it, will likely upset the US, the European Union, Japan and other governments that deal with China.

Apple wins a core iPhone multitouch patent
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has awarded Apple the patent to one of the core iPhone multitouch functions. Patently Apple reports that the patent involves the oscillator signal and circuit, which are key to sensing when someone is touching the iPhone display. iTunes Connect returns one day early
iTunes Connect has returned from a scheduled downtime one day early, reports say. The service for Mac and iOS developers regularly goes offline for several days during the Christmas season. This year Connect was officially scheduled to be offline from December 22nd through to the 29th, during which time no changes by app developers would go live. Why Apple would resume Connect service early is unknown, but the company could theoretically be trying to cope with a heavy backlog.

Rumor: HP tried to sell webOS for $1.2b before giving up
HP had tried to sell webOS before it settled on open-sourcing the platform, according to a rumor on Wednesday. Sources for VentureBeat claimed that HP had supposedly been asking for the same $1.2 billion that it paid for Palm in 2010 to avoid taking a loss. If it had been talking to Amazon and other companies, they may have balked given that HP was charging the same price for a division whose hardware had since been taken off the market.

Verizon suffers third 3G/4G network outage this month
Verizon's 3G and 4G data network has gone down yet again this month. This time, however, it's rather random and irregular. Some users in New York City were reporting connection problems as of Wednesday afternoon, while others haven't. Verizon subscribers in Phoenix, Minneapolis, Detroit, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco and Portland are among those reporting problems.

DISA gets a spoonful of Froyo, approves Dell Venue for military use
Remember when the DoD approved the Android-powered Dell Streak for military use? Well the DISA's latest list of approved gear now includes Dell's Venue and the custom version of Froyo that it runs. Stolen iPad helps locate families' missing Christmas gifts
A stolen iPad was ultimately responsible for recovering the Christmas gifts of two California families this weekend, the LA County Sheriff's office says. In Westlake Village, a man was reportedly woken up by a noise at 3:30AM on Christmas Day, only to discover it was a burglar in his home stealing gifts. The man chased the criminal, but quickly lost sight of him; a search by deputies yielded no results.

Like most technically-inclined folks, I found myself doing a little family tech support over the holidays. I needed to use an iPod touch as a USB drive to copy files between my Mac and my brother's Windows 7 computer. This isn't something I'll do often so I was looking for something easy and free. I found what I was looking for in iExplorer (formerly "iPhone Explorer") from Macroplant.
Let's be clear: iExplorer is a simple application which is designed to do only two things: a) mount your iOS devices like a basic USB "thumb" drive and b) persuade you to consider upgrading to the company's PhoneDisk (US$20) program, which has more features. Spotify is TUAW Best of 2011 winner for iPhone music apps
TUAW readers have spoken, and Spotify has grabbed the last iPhone award in the TUAW Best of 2011 voting. The free app (there is a charge for premium access) provides access to over 15 million tracks of music.
Considering that Spotify has only been available in the US for six months, the fact that the app pulled in over 56 percent of the votes shows just how popular it is with TUAW readers.

Verizon experiencing nationwide data outage?
That phone on Big Red having problems with data? Apparently you're not alone, as the carrier appears to be having issues again judging by the metric ton of emails we've gotten from you experiencing LTE, and in some cases CDMA, blackouts across the country. Our Galaxy Nexus in New York is chugging along with 1xRTT while a Thunderbolt in Washington DC is doing just fine with CDMA. We've just pinged Verizon and will update if we hear back.

XBMC outs 11.0 Eden Beta with AirPlay, more
XBMC recently rolled out a significant revision of its home theater software, 11.0 Eden Beta 1, for download. Its makers say there are too many improvements to list, but the main ones include speed boosts, add-on update rollbacks, and improvements to the Confluence default skin. iOS users also now get AirPlay support with stable in-sync performance.

Intel ships Cedar Trail-based Atom in netbook's last hurrah
Intel ushered in what might be the swansong for netbooks on Wednesday by finally shipping Atom processors based on its Cedar Trail platform. Confirming rumors of another delay, it was shipping the 1.6GHz N2600 and 1.83GHz N2800 with the expectation that they would be available in early 2012. Argentina Government blocks sale of iPhone, other smartphones
The government of Argentina has temporarily blocked the sale of smartphones, including Apple's iPhone, in an effort to stabilize its own economy. This consumer electronics ban is meant to slow inflation and reduce the widening chasm between the peso and the US dollar.
The ban is a part of Argentina Ministry Industry's recent decision to reduce the automatic import of certain phones. RIM and Apple have been forced to wait between 60 and 180 days for permission to sell from the Customs Authority. There's no word on how long the current ban will las

Fiksu: iPhone 4S helped app downloads jump 83% in November
An update to Fiksu's index for iOS apps showed a far-reaching effect from the launch of the iPhone 4S on downloads. At nearly 5.7 million downloads per day among the top 200 free iOS apps, the App Store had seen its downloads grow 83 percent over the same point year before. The count was an all-time high and a 15 percent hike over an already record-setting 4.9 million in October.

News: Wicked Audio previews Solus headphones
Wicked Audio has announced that it will release its new Solus headphones at the 2012 International CES. Toshiba Canvio drives failing to connect to MacBooks
Toshiba's Canvio-series USB 3.0 hard drives are failing to connect properly with the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro, according to PhoneNews. The site says it tested five Canvio drives with a new 2011 Air; none of them mounted, and in most cases, the drives are said to have failed to even spin up. The issue appears to be Mac-centric, since it was otherwise reproduced only on a Sony VAIO notebook and a current-generation MacBook Pro.

Daily iPad App: Trenches 2
Thunder Game Works' Trenches was quite the hit on the iPhone last year, combining a cartoony World War 2 setting with some solid real-time strategy combat and quite a few innovative game features. The game also spawned a few spinoffs, and was popular enough for EA to publish the sequel.

Sprint quietly sets up first LTE sites in Illinois
Sprint in an update ostensibly about 3G upgrades revealed that its switch to LTE for 4G took its first steps. Its first group of LTE cell sites had been set up in the unusual location of Kankakee, Illinois, well south of Chicago. Phishing email uses Apple disguise to steal personal info
A new phishing scam is once again targeting owners of Apple products, warns security firm Intego. The attack is said to have begun "on or around" Christmas Day, and involves an email that claims to be from "appleid@id.apple.com" with the subject line "Apple update your Billing Information." It insists that a person's billing information is out of date, and that it must be updated or else Apple will delete the associated account. A provided link looks like it should lead to Apple's online store, but in reality takes victims to a fake sign-in page.

Airtight adds iOS AirPlay to Google TV
Google TV users can now access to Airtight, an app that allows AirPlay streaming. That means iOS device owners can stream video and photos to Google TV over the Wi-Fi, with some limitations.
As the Mac Observer points out, the US$0.99 app doesn't allow mirroring or the streaming of any content with DRM, which means movies and TV shows purchased from the iTunes Store are out. It also doesn't support music streaming at this time, which could be a deterrent for some.

M-Edge suit accuses Amazon of corporate bullying, patent infringement over Kindle cases
Case maker M-Edge filed suit with a Maryland court last week accusing Amazon of "unlawful corporate bullying" and patent infringement relating to the company's line of Kindle cases. According to M-Edge, the company signed a three-year agreement with Amazon in November 2009 for a 15-percent sales commission, only to have the retail giant demand a new contract with a 32-percent cut a mere two month later. A lawyer for M-Edge told The Wall Street Journal that Amazon punished the case maker over its refusal to play ball, after threats of burying the company's products on its site. iTunes, mobile apps were 20% of online sales on Christmas
Apps and digital media were a fifth of all the spending online during Christmas Day, comScore said on Wednesday. Those paying either individually or through subscriptions for apps, e-books, music, and video shot up from the 2.8 percent average between the start of November and December 26 to exactly 20 percent on December 25. The spike could be directly attributed to a rush of mobile devices, mostly on Apple's iOS, as well as gift cards.

Fake Apple billing email is circulating
Not surprisingly, scammers are targeting Apple customers with a fake phishing email asking them to update their account billing information. People who are new to Apple and probably received their first Mac or iOS device during the holiday season are particularly vulnerable to this scam. This group of customers would not be surprised to receive an email from Apple shortly after they signed up for iTunes for the first time.

UK Prime Minister to receive personalized iPad app for government news
UK Prime Minister and long time iPad fan David Cameron will receive a custom iPad app for keeping on top of government news, according to The Telegraph. Cabinet Office programmers have been working on the app that will deliver information such as crime stats, unemployment numbers and much more to the Prime Minister.

Dezember haben einen beispiellosen Boost in Sachen Android und iOS-Aktivierungen verursacht: im Vergleich zu den vorherigen Tagen im Dezember haben die Aktivierungen beider um 353 % zugelegt. Das ist laut Flurry Analytics für beide ein neuer Rekord was Aktivierungen an einem Tag angeht (der letzte stammt bzeichnenderweise vom 25.12. 2010), insgesamt wurden 6,8 Millionen iOS- und Android-Geräte aktiviert. Intel Ivy Bridge processors may ship April 8
PC builder slips on Wednesday may have locked down release timing for Intel's Ivy Bridge roster. About 25 processors should be available on or near April 8, Digitimes said, 17 of which would be for desktops. Auf der vom Chaos Computer Club veranstalteten 28C3 hatten Karsten Nohl und Luca Melette demonstriert, wie einfach das Hacken von GSM-Handys ist: ohne große Probleme lassen sich einzelne User imitieren und ihre Konten nutzen. Dabei ist die Sicherheit von GSM-Verbindungen auch vom Netzbetreiber abhängig: in Deutschland steht O2 besonders schlecht da, aber auch beim sichersten Anbieter T-Mobile ist die Sicherheit nicht hundertprozentig. Grund dafür sind unter anderem die in den letzten Jahren stark gewachsenen Netze, deren Server an der Belastungsgrenze arbeiten, weswegen gern an der Sicherheit gespart wird. Air Dictate macht aus Siri eine Diktiersoftware für den Mac

Eigentlich überrascht es uns nicht. Nachdem man mit Siri ein Auto starten oder seine Medienbibliothek fernsteuern kann, hat nun jemand eine App gebastelt, mit der Siri zur Diktiersoftware wird. Sie heißt Air Dictate, kommt von der Firma Avatron und verbindet das iPhone 4S mit dem Mac. Rubin: 3.7 million Android devices activated over weekend
Andy Rubin has used his Twitter account to inform his audience that a staggering 3.7 million new Android devices were activated over the holiday weekend. Rubin recently tweeted that Android is now averaging 700,000 activations a day, but this more than doubled for the past weekend. On each day of last Saturday and Sunday, 1.85 million devices were activated.

Mutige vor: im Januar soll CM9 fertig sein, jetzt hat das CyanogenMod-Team eine Alphaversion des Trebuchet Launchers als .apk und .zip im XDA Developers Forum gepostet. CM9 erlaubt unter anderem eine frei wählbare Anzahl von Homescreens, das Ändern der Widget-Größe und das Sortieren der Drawer Apps nach Titel, Datum usw. Google's SVP of Mobile just provided us with another glimpse inside the horse's mouth, claiming that Android scored 3.7 million new device activations over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Meizu plant Quadcore-Variante des Meizu MX für Mai

Aber auch wenn der Android Market und der iTunes App Store zehnmal mehr Apps haben: der Windows Phone Marketplace hat die 50.000 in weniger als 14 Monaten geschafft, das ist schneller als Android, Symbian oder BlackBerry. Schneller war nur iOS mit 12 Monaten, konnte aber zum Start auch schon mit vier Millionen iPhones rechnen.

Unreleased HP TouchPad Go reviwed, proves surprise hit
HP's stillborn TouchPad Go has been given its first and possibly only review on Tuesday in a sign that it might have been the tablet HP should have launched first. The seven-inch tablet handled by webOS Nation has the same 1024x768 display as before and the faster dual-core 1.5GHz chip from the 64GB TouchPad, making it not only as capable but giving it a much sharper screen. Lenovo gave a preview of its Las Vegas plans with word of an Internet-aware TV and its own cloud service. To be called the LeTV in its Chinese version, it would ship sometime in the first quarter of 2012. Most details aren't public, although more of these should be coming in January.

Army of MetroPCS phones heading to Amazon's virtual shelves
MetroPCS purports to bring the wireless to all, but it hasn't had the right showcase to fulfill that promise until now. The carrier announced today that its arsenal of handsets is on the way to one of the biggest online retailers in the world. A quick perusal of the PR below reveals no handset exclusions, so it's safe to say that Amazon will offer every handset from the mobile provider's armory. Commonwealth Club talk with Isaacson transcript released
A "lightly edited" but complete transcript of the interview between Fortune Senior Editor Adam Lashinsky (who is currently writing a book on Steve Jobs and Apple) and Jobs' biographer Walter Isaacson, which was conducted at a Commonwealth Club of California meeting on December 15th is now available. The transcript shows that the talk focused on darker elements of Jobs' personality and Apple's business decisions, a topic Lashinsky will be exploring in his own book.

Flawed study decides iPhone is for games, Android for apps
Trumpeting in its headline that "iPhone is for games, Android is for apps," Xyologic has managed to pull a singular feat: it's undermined 5/8 of its own name with the analysis that follows.
Xyologic compares the entire US Android Market against just the free iPhone offerings in the App Store, which is the first warning that its data and analysis is going to be skewed. Comparing the top 150 downloads between these weirdly disparate markets yields the following results:

Daily iPad App: Sonic CD
Honestly, I can't really profess to be that big a Sonic fan. I like and have played most of the 2D iterations of Sega's headline platformer series on the Genesis, the Game Gear, and most recently, iOS. But I'm not a superfan by any means, and if I've ever played Sonic CD before, I don't remember. I certainly never owned it (though I do remember renting a Sega CD with a friend and playing Night Trap and Sewer Shark over a few weekends).
All that said, Sonic CD, release just recently as a universal app for iOS, seems to me to be an exceptionally faithful port of what I do remember about Sonic, offering up colorful graphics, strong controls (performed wi

Nintendo introduces paid DLC, lets you complete the games you completed
Did you get a Nintendo shaped bundle of joy for Christmas? Completed the games already? Fear not, as from March Kyoto's gaming veterans will be launching paid downloadable game content for its 3D handheld. Dropbox test app adds photo, video imports
Dropbox has introduced a test build of its desktop app for Windows, Mac and Linux machines. The beta release now enables users to automatically import photos and videos. The system initiates the upload process when a camera, phone or SD card is connected to the computer.

Foxconn doubles factory size to meet iPhone demand
Chinese manufacturer Foxconn is growing again, with recent reports stating that the company is doubling the size of one of its production lines in order to keep up with production for current and future Apple products. The Foxconn Science Park in Zhengzhou is undergoing a $1.1 billion expansion, which will double the current output of about 200,000, with more than 130,000 workers kicking out tons of products for sale all over the world.
The facilities are apparently going through constant updates, so Foxconn is pushing for more and more production all the time, rather than waiting for a big plan to finish and then updating everything. But by this time next year, the work is all scheduled to be finished

This is the last EHD podcast of the year and the last until we're on the ground at CES, so next week will be one of our rare misses -- we'll make it up to you, we promise. Until then, there's plenty of news to tide us over as LG, Sony and Samsung have all been busy with pre-CES teases of their latest technology. Also seeing a lot of action is the mobile remote apps segment, while newcomer RUWT?! has our attention, Roku, DirecTV, Western Digital, Logitech and Control4 all also had something to contribute. Verizon also has a new media server DVR replacement to talk about, while HBO Go has extended its reach to all major cable providers and the Super Bowl will be streaming online for the first time. Microsoft gives devs prizes for 'quality' Windows Phone apps
Microsoft Canada has taken an unusual approach to spur Windows Phone development through an initiative called the Developer Movement. Those who publish at least one "quality" app to the Marketplace get prize bundles that scale the more they post. Publishing one or two lets app writers pick from prizes such as a free Kinect, Microsoft Points, or a 1TB external hard drive, while those who publish three or more may get publicity in the official Xbox and MSDN newsletters.

Argentina surprises, bans sales of iPhone, Blackberry
In a surprise move, the government of Argentina has "temporarily" blocked the sales of certain foreign-made electronics, including the iPhone and the Blackberry lines of smartphones, in an effort to help stabilize the country's ailing economy, Manuals.ws reports. Between them, the two companies' products make up 60 percent of the smartphone market in Argentina. Other handset makers (such as Microsoft, Nokia, Motorola, LG and Samsung) have avoided the ban by opening plants in the country.

Reports suggest Apple retail had a great Christmas
We've already heard that the iPhone and iOS had a record day this Christmas weekend, and here's even more stats proving that's the case. First up, the latest data from Flurry Analytics points out that both iOS and Android saw not only record activations over the holiday weekend, with as many as 6.8 million new devices connecting up to their respective app stores for the first time. And of course with new devices comes new app downloads: Flurry says there were around 242 million app downloads on Christmas Day alone, a rise of more than 125% compared to the previous month's average (which itself has been high, I believe, ever

Kinect sensor wants to guess astronauts' weight, tell them to hit the space gym
How do you weigh yourself when there's no gravity keeping you down? Well, you can calculate your mass by sitting on an oscillating spring and comparing its standing frequency to your riding frequency (NASA's current method), or you could rig up a Kinect sensor to tell you when you're getting fat. Leak shows Intel Medfield blows past most ARM mobile chips
A new discovery Tuesday has shown that Intel's Medfield chip for smartphones and tablets could temporarily claim the performance lead when it ships. Benchmarks at VR-Zone of a 1.6GHz example of the new Atom had it reach a score of 10,500 in Caffeinemark 3, an Android test for Java. The best ARM chip in the test, the 1.2GHz Exynos from the Samsung Galaxy S II, scored 8,500 points and let Intel take a roughly 24 percent lead.
