Cregle iPen for iPad packs ballpoint accuracy, cursor

Cregle is hoping to make one if the few if not only high-precision styluses for the iPad through the iPen. The input has an active digitizer and fine tip like professional pens that lets it draw at a precision closer to a ballpoint but with optimizations for the iPad's screen, which isn't explicitly tailored to pens. It discards palm input and, with supporting apps, will show a cursor even when not quite in contact.

During December and January, The Unofficial Apple Weblog is soliciting your nominations and votes for the best products for Mac, iPhone/iPod touch, and iPad. We'll start with nominations in a category, and then tally your votes for the top-nominated products a few days later. The winner in each category receives the highly-coveted title of TUAW Best of 2011. GoPro HD Hero 2 review

GoPro has been in the HD action sports and helmet cam game for some time now, with its Hero line proving a popular sight atop many a daredevil's lid. Now, you can add HD Hero 2 ($300) to the ever growing list of options now, as this is the latest (and they say greatest) incarnation to date. Last time we tested the Hero Original -- as it's now called -- against the Contour HD, but now we're pitting new against old, like for like, side by side. Not only will we discover how the new boy stands up against the camera it effectively usurps, we'll also see

Pure Contour 200i-Air iOS dock reaches FCC with AirPlay

A new FCC filing has given out Pure's plans to make its own AirPlay dock. The oval-shaped Contour 200i-Air takes the existing Contour and adds in the requisite Wi-Fi and companion hardware to take audio from iPads, iPhones, and iPod touch players on the local network. It's not clear if it will keep the Wi-Fi Internet radio features of its ancestor.

Pure swings by the FCC with Contour 200i-Air(play dock)

Remember Pure's Contour iPhone dock / WiFi radio that debuted last year at CES? Between us, you and the wall, we suspect a sequel is on the way in the shape of the Contour 200i Air that's just been escorted out of the FCC's underground bunker and dumped unceremoniously on a Washington highway. It's packing the same setup as this year's model, except now it's packing Airplay chops for when you wanna stream music from your couch-based iDevice. Stay tuned, we'll try to get our hands on one of these in a

Google becomes the Clark Griswold of the internet with 'Jingle Bells' doodle

Having conquered so many aspects of the software world, it's time for Google to take the next logical step in its evolution: becoming that annoying neighbor who always goes a bit overboard each year with the Christmas display. This time out, Google's doodle lets you play five bars of "Jingle Bells" manually, bringing down the lights and finishing up the song with a full-on holiday light show. Check it out, but don't blame us if your computer blows a fuse.

Tweetbot wins TUAW Best of 2011 voting for best iPhone social networking app

The team at Tapbots is going to get an early Christmas present today -- their Twitter client Tweetbot (US$2.99) was voted the best iPhone social networking app by readers in our continuing TUAW Best of 2011 polling. The app, which launched in April of this year into a crowded Twitter client market, quickly became a favorite of many iPhone users. How popular was it in our voting? Tweetbot pulled in 56.7 percent of all of the votes from over one thousand readers. As with the rest of the Tapbots product line, the user interface for Tweetbot shows that a remarkable amount of thought went into the design. Ainovo's bargain Novo 7 ICS tablet ready to tickle US pockets?

Remember that curious $100, ICS-touting, Novo 7 tablet we saw back at the beginning of the month? Until now, the Ainovo (aka Ainol) branded device was a bit of a gambler's punt, with some Chinese sites charging a suspicion-arousing $60 shipping fee. Now, however, the odds are lo

MIT researchers locate genes that help underlie memory formation, zap some mice

Over time, the neurons in your brain are going to change. And that's only natural. When you experience a new event, your brain encodes the memory by altering the connections between neurons, which is caused by turning on several genes within these neurons. Recenty, a team of neuroscientists at MIT published their findings in the Dec. 23rd issue of Science in which the group was able to pinpoin

Nokia N9 gets unofficial UI tweak, makes MeeGo lie down and play landscape

Nokia's MeeGo'd pillowcase smartphone has been given a 90-degree twist. This new landscape mode works across the three main navigation screens and can be accessed through N9Tweak, an unofficial mod that can be downloaded through the phone's web browser. Hajime Research is assembling a robot taller than you, Mr. Stark couldn't be more proud (video)

Not only are robots getting their own social networks, but now the plan is for them to become increasingly taller than us humans -- at least that's what the people at Hajime Research have in mind. The company has in its strategic plans the ultimate goal of building a 59-foot large machine that could be a comic-book character all on its own; before it can do so, though, it's starting with a 13-foot humanoid. Hajime Sakamoto is the man behind the bizarre idea, and if there's anyone that can do, it's him. After all, in 2009 he built

Kindle Fire root reignited, beats 6.2.1 update

Amazon's latest attempt to lock down root access on its Kindle Fire has been, well, routed. It took the tinkerers mere days to catch up and the new root file is now up for grabs, courtesy of Android Police and a few good devs. The method is app-based and looks to be disarmingly simple, but the usual warnings apply; mess up those software internals and bam, you've voided your warranty. Those still willing to dabble can find the full details at the source link below.

Nokia Lumia 800 likes to taste the rainbow, wants to try a splash of white and yellow?

Cyan and Magenta were a good start, but Nokia hasn't finished plucking eye-catching colors for its smartphone flagship. Alongside a not-exactly-unexpected white model, these leaked renders suggest that our favorite polycarbonate Windows Phone will net a zesty yellow (possibly lime green) wardrobe at some point in the future. According to MonWindowsPhone, details on timeframes and launch regions remain foggy and will depend on customer demand. If the phone fares well in certain locales, Nokia will likely be more willing to offer up s

MIT's got a way of using encrypted data without decrypting it, next stop, traveling without moving

Excepting Jersey Shore participants, people generally value privacy and it's a bigger issue when so much data is stored online. Ethical data controllers will keep it encrypted, but much like leaving food in a fridge, you have to take it out if you wanna use it, which is when it's most at risk. A team from MIT, thinks it's found a solution: a database that allows you to ask it questions without taking it out of the fridge wait, what? CryptDB works by turning data into "homomorphic" information: strings of numbers, which you can then calculate ag
