CompactFlash Association readies next-gen XQD format, promises write speeds of 125 MB/s and up
We don't need to tell you CF is one of the few memory card formats that's managed to survive the SD tidal wave (remember when you needed Memory Stick to use a Sony point-and-shoot?). But if you're the kind of serious shooter who uses CF, you might be tickled to know its high-speed successor is just about good to go. The CompactFlash Association said it's finished work on XQD, a next-gen format that promises faster speeds, along with a smaller footprint than current-gen CF cards. As for transfer rates, the included PCI Express interface promises theoretical write speeds as high as 5 Gb/s, though the association is quick to peg real-world writes at 125 MB/s and up. Halo ATLAS gives live game updates on Android, iOS, WP7
Microsoft revealed on Thursday that it will bring out its Halo ATLAS game companion app to users on December 10. The Assisted Tactical Assault System will give Halo Reach and Halo Anniversary gamers the ability to watch real-time data from live matches. The app can be had for Windows Phone, iOS and Android devices and was created in conjunction with Brady games.

French court denies Samsung's request for iPhone 4S ban
A French court has denied Samsung's request for a preliminary injunction against Apple's iPhone 4S as part of the worldwide, ongoing patent disputes between the two companies. Florian Mueller of FOSS Patents has a lengthy, in-depth analysis of the court's decision, but essentially Samsung's case against Apple was far to weak to justify the "disproportionate" step of banning the iPhone 4S from France. ZTE squeezes 7-inch V66 tablet with Verizon LTE through the FCC's halls

Pope swaps iPad for Sony Tablet S to light Christmas tree
Pope Benedict XVI has eschewed the promised tablet for the job, the iPad, in favor of a Sony Tablet S in order to light the tallest Christmas tree in the world. The reason for the switch isn't known, though DigitalLife has contacted the Vatican and Apple in order to find out the reason for the last-minute change. The tree is 2,132 feet tall and overlooks the town of Gubbio in Italy.

Native TweetDeck apps reach Mac, Windows
Twitter has released two new versions of TweetDeck, its more powerful Twitter client software. The title is now available in native Mac and Windows editions. Previously the software was dependent on Adobe AIR, which runs apps based on common web frameworks. For the native apps Macs must be running OS X 10.6 or later, while Windows PCs require only Windows XP.

Toshiba's Excite Honeycomb tablet confirmed for Canadian launch in January
We've already heard a fair bit about Toshiba's forthcoming 10.1-inch Honeycomb tablet, but the company has only now finally confirmed a name -- Excite, previously seen in a trademark filing -- and a launch date (or month, anyway) for the tablet outside of Europe. Apple posts iTunes Rewind 2011, chooses App Store favorites for the year
Apple has posted its iTunes Rewind 2011 page, where it has spotlighted the best and most popular content on the App Store. Singer Adele has won Apple's best artist of the year, while the Foo Fighters picked up the spot for best album on the store.
Modern Family, Breaking Bad, Parks and Recreation, and Downton Abbey (all terrific TV shows) are spotlighted in the TV area, and Apple has also chosen winners for the books and movies categories. The Best Audio Podcast on the store is one done by the Epic Meal Time guys, and the Best Video Podcast goes to the very popular TED Talks (which also has its own app).

ZTE expects to launch high-end LTE smartphones in the US by mid-2012
ZTE's no small company by any stretch of the imagination, but it's still largely an unknown in the US. The phone manufacturer has been focused on selling lower-end devices in the prepaid market -- often with carrier-specific branding -- but is now hoping to steer the ship in a different direction. T-Mobile accused of unfair Android app block while iOS fine
Visual voicemail developer YouMail accused T-Mobile of trying to censor a competitor by blocking its app. The carrier relayed through Google that it believed the app could be "harmful to devices, networks or users" and was triggering an "adverse network disruption." T-Mobile didn't contact YouMail itself, which led CEO Alex Quilici to suspect that the provider simply wanted to shut down a voicemail alternative.

Logic Pro 9, MainStage 2 to migrate to Mac App Store
Apple is notifying resellers that Logic Studio and Logic Express are no longer being offered in boxed copies, reports say. Instead, Logic Pro 9 and MainStage 2 will at some point migrate to the Mac App Store, though when and at what price is unmentioned. The preponderance of the time, kernel panics are hardware related and not software. Looking at the error log can help you figure out what issue may be causing it.
Look for the last loaded and last unloaded kernel extensions as well as the items named in the extension backtrace. They can provide good indication of what's going wrong.

StyleTap iOS Wrapper brings PalmOS apps to App Store
StyleTap has released the StyleTap iOS Wrapper SDK, a new tool for developers. The code lets users bring PalmOS apps to iOS in a way that doesn't violate App Store guidelines. A Palm app is wrapped into the StyleTap platform, the company explains, in such a way that anything restricted by Apple is removed. Developers receive an Xcode template project, and guidelines for internal use or submitting to Apple. PRC and PDB files along with StyleTap license info must be inserted into the project, which can then be built out to create the final iOS app.

Jawbone offers 'no questions asked' refund for troubled UP band, even if you keep it
While Jawbone attempts to fix the handful of substantial issues plaguing its new lifestyle band, it's now announced that it will begin giving free refunds to dissatisfied UP customers -- and you can even keep hold of the band afterwards. Production of the bands has been put on pause, but the company is continuing to roll out app retweaks for existing lifestyle metric obsessives. I enjoy using my computer, especially at night when it's quiet. I enjoy it so much that I often forget to get up and stretch every few hours. I also stay up way too late. My propensity to get caught up in my Twitter stream or my RSS feed is one reason why I bought Coffee Break.

Google continues to evolve the search experience on Android and iPad tablets by adding a new carousel viewing option for large images. Chinese MacBook component factory still shut down
Apple deals with a variety of component suppliers in the Asia Pacific region. Usually, the production process is uneventful, but sometimes the company has to do some fancy juggling to keep its product inventory in balance. Most of the time, customers don't see these behind-the-scene changes, because Apple has the reserves to buy its components from other suppliers when one can't meet demand.

iPad 3 to launch in February, analyst sources claim
The next-generation iPad will launch in February, says Citigroup analyst Richard Gardner. The analyst cites "several sources" on the matter, who back up the notion that it will have twice the screen resolution of its predecessor. iBooks App bekommt Nachtlesemodus

Die beliebte E-Book-Applikation für iOS-Geräte steht nun in einer aktualisierten Version kostenlos im App Store zum Download bereit. Apple stattete iBooks nun mit einem tollen Nachtlesemodus aus, der sich beim Lesen schonend auf die Augen auswirkt.
Als größte Neuerung der Version 1.5 kann zweifelsohne der Nachtlesemodus bezeichnet werden, der den Bildschirmhintergrund in schwarz erscheinen lässt und die Schrift in weißer Farbe darstellt. Somit werden die Augen weniger angestrengt während des Lesens eines E-Books. Außerdem wird somit verhindert, dass der Bildschirm beim Lesen in einem dunklen Raum blendet. Twitter krempelt um: Neues Design, Markenseiten und Apps

Und schon wieder ist einer der Hauptservices im Netz kaum noch wiederzuerkennen. Nur wenige Wochen nach der kleinen Umstrukturierung wird jetzt komplett umgestellt. Das neue Design soll Dinge wieder ein Mal vereinfachen, dreht dabei einiges einfach nur von einer Seite auf die andere und erweitert den Stream um mehr Medieninhalte, dafür gibt es obendrein aufgefrischte Apps für Android und iOS und im Testverfahren für die ersten 20 ausgewählten Marken jetzt auch Marken-Seiten mit ein paar zusätzlichen Features für zielgenauere Werbung. iTunes Rewind 2011 promotes top apps, video, music
Apple has posted the 2011 edition of iTunes Rewind, its annual promotion of what it considers top picks at the iTunes Store, the App Store and the iBookstore. It's time to stop ignoring that "updates available" notification and start enjoying some refreshed Google goodies on Android. Daily iPad App: Fuego's River Adventure
Unfortunately, Fuego's River Adventure isn't actually that great of a game. It's extremely simple, the controls aren't precise enough to really make it fun, and while there are about 20 stages to float through where you need to go down a river dodging obstacles and picking up bonus items. I was done after about the second stage.
Fuego's River Adventure works much better as a tech demo, but it uses some really interesting code. The game runs on your iPad 2, and it needs that camera to serve as a controller. To play, you move your body back and forth in front of the camera

The $25 annual fee for iTunes Match is likely only putting Apple just above even on the service, says Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster in new memo. Rogue Amoeba launches Piezo for Mac App Store
TUAW has long been a fan of Rogue Amoeba's Audio Hijack Pro application, which provides both audio capture and live filtering for OS X. Now, Piezo (US$10) brings many of those same features to the Mac App Store.

Leica intros V-Lux 3 24X superzoom with better low light
Leica continued its recent tradition of upscaling Panasonic compact cameras on Thursday by unveiling the V-Lux 3. A close cousin of the Lumix FZ150, the superzoom centers on a 25-600mm (24X) equivalent, f2.8-5.2 lens. It makes a rare step down in resolution, from 14 to 12.1 megapixels, but the CMOS sensor both helps in low light as well as offering the same 1080p, 60 frames per second video and 12 frames per second burst still shooting as its Panasonic counterpart.

French court squashes Samsung's quest for iPhone 4S ban
Apparently it's time for the French to deliver Apple's tit for Samsung's tat won in US courts last week. Sammy's request for an injunction against the sale of the iPhone 4S was rejected by a court in France, which called the reaction out of proportion with its claims of intellectual property theft. And, as if to rub salt in the wound, the judge ordered Samsung to pay €100,000 (about $134,000) to cover Cupertino's legal fees. France denies Samsung attempt to ban iPhone 4S
Samsung returned to its string of losses in its legal battle with Apple on Thursday after France's Tribunal de Grande Instance rejected Samsung's attempt to secure a preliminary ban on the iPhone 4S. Le Figaro's Benjamin Ferran, attending the ruling, understood that the action Samsung wanted was "disproportionate." More analysts see high Q1 iPhones in wake of AT&T numbers
More analysts are predicting high iPhone sales this quarter in the wake of an AT&T announcement saying the carrier has already sold over 6 million smartphones during the period. It's no secret that we were downright smitten when HTC dropped 2010's proverbial bombshell: the EVO 4G. A knockout device that served not only as WiMAX's ambassador, but also catapulted us into expansive "superphone" territory with what was then a gargantuan 4.3-inch screen. Apple patenting 3D motion input to rival Kinect for Windows
Apple has been working on its own, unique alternative to Kinect for Windows, a newly published patent application shows. Its design for a "three-dimensional imaging and display system" would have a device sit on the desk that would use one of multiple possible methods, such as tracking the reflection time or attenuation in light beams. It could let users get audible feedback on interacting with the environment, navigate a corresponding 3D desktop, and use head tracking for tasks like zooming in or scrolling.

Analysts predict Lenovo to overtake Apple in all-in-one PCs
A new prediction from Digitimes Research has made the claim that Apple will cede the top spot in all-in-one desktops to Lenovo in 2012. The iMac would drop from an estimated 30 percent of the field in 2011 to 24.1 percent in 2012, just being overtaken as Lenovo hit 25 percent. The Taiwan firm editorialized and claimed that Apple only had "limited room" for hardware variety while Lenovo had more choices and prices, particularly for its home country of China.

Nokia is pretty busy at the moment. Alongside clandestine events with Verizon, the first update for the Lumia 800 has now begun to roll out. As is the case with most WinPho upgrades, you'll have to plug the polycarbonate slab into Zune to pull down several new performance enhancements and features. These will include charging and audio quality improvements, as well as improved display switching in bright light. Don't panic if you're unable to grab the update immediately; the phone manufacturer told us that it will be gradually rolled out across all of the initial launch countries over the next two weeks.

Trotz Valve, Blizzard und ein paar guter Spiele im Mac App Store sieht die Spiele-Landschaft auf einem Macintosh nicht gerade rosig aus. Es gibt sogar Stimmen, die sind darüber gar nicht mal so unglücklich. Denn mit steigender Anzahl an Spielen wachsen auch Hardwareanforderungen und Treiber-Probleme.
Daher wäre es doch nett, wenn man eine Konsole einfach an den hauseigenen iMac mit 27-Zoll anschließen könnte.

UBS now estimates Apple to sell 30M iPhones
In what seems like a game of self one-upmanship, UBS' Maynard Um has raised his own estimate of the number of iPhones Apple will sell in the 4th quarter to 30 million units instead of 28 million, reacting to an earlier report today at a UBS conference that AT&T is on track to handily beat its best-ever iPhone quarter of 6.1 million units, having already sold 6M in the first two months of the quarter.

Meizu MX first hands-on!
While the rest of Hong Kong were enjoying their dim sum breakfast, we've been busy fiddling with the freshly delivered Meizu MX due out on January 1st. As expected, the customized Android 2.3.5 (dubbed Flyme OS) is pretty slick on that 1.4GHz dual-core Samsung Exynos 4210 and 1GB of RAM, but we keep an eye on the consistency of its performance. Compared to the smaller M9, we're hugely impressed by this successor's solid build quality -- the white crystal casing on the back gives out a premium feel and look, though only time will tell how scratch-resistant it is. Likewise, we also dig the booklet or CD album-like packaging -- you can see it all in our hands-on gallery below.

Apple TV in Canada now offers TV episode purchases
A silent upgrade has allowed Apple TV units in Canada to allow TV show purchases, using iCloud streaming to store the purchased episode and stream them to other Apple devices. While it was possible to purchase TV shows via iTunes in Canada before, the update makes it possible for Apple TVs to purchase directly, 9to5 Mac reports. TV episodes cost up to $2.50 in standard definition and up to $3.50 in HD.

App updates roundup: Jetpack Joyride, Spelltower, more
Thursday on the App Store brings another round of new app releases, as well as some big updates. We've got news on some of those releases elsewhere, but here are a few of the app updates currently waiting for you in the App Store on your iOS device. Jetpack Joyride has gotten what Halfbrick calls "our greatest update ever" with a new mission system, a new forest area to play through, and lots of other add-ons and tweaks. Great game, only 99 cents, so go grab it if you haven't yet. Anomaly Warzone Earth is another great title that now boasts iCloud syncing for saved games, as well as some graphical and gameplay tweaks.

Google chair sees 'majority' of TVs with Google TV by summer
Google chairman Eric Schmidt made an aggressive prediction at the Le Web conference in Paris (video below) that Google TV would dictate the TV landscape by summer 2012. He believed that the "majority of televisions you see in stores" should have the Android-based OS build inside over the course of the next several months. No indication was given of which companies were involved and how many of their models would make the leap.

Acer to focus on ultrabooks, hopes to ship 10% more in 2012
Acer in a discussion surrounding the company's global internal meeting confirmed a broader switch away from its traditional budget base towards ultrabooks. CEO JT Wang told Dow Jones that the ultra-thin PCs, which owe their existence to the MacBook Air, would be the "key growth driver" in 2012. OnLive ships Android, iOS play apps, new wireless controller
Acting on promises from E3, OnLive late Wednesday launched its mobile gameplay apps. The iPad, iPhone, and Android apps are gradually rolling out and should let gamers play, not just watch, titles either using the touchscreen or with the Universal Wireless Controller. It normally needs Wi-Fi, but the shipping version now works with any LTE-equipped tablet, including the HTC Jetstream, Motorola Xoom, and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE.

Sprint pushing firmware update to Epic 4G Touch, fixes hotspot connectivity and signal strength
Has your Hesse-blessed Epic 4G Touch been acting up? Never fear, a fix for the WiMAX-equipped handset is on the way. Sprint's begun rolling out an update for its Galaxy S II variant that should addresses a couple of irksome bugs -- namely, the loss of 4G hotspot connectivity while on a call, and a boost for the wireless radio. The firmware update'll hit phones in a phased release and should take about ten minutes to complete. OnLive is one of the most impressive gaming options out there -- it's a cloud gaming service with the games actually 'playing' on remote hardware. That may sound clunky, but it works like a charm.
Instead of running the games from a local executable on your PC, Mac or console system (as you would if you installed from a disc or downloaded from Steam), you instead buy access to games on OnLive's servers. Apple launches '12 Days of Christmas' in Europe, Canada
Starting slightly earlier this year than normal, Apple has released its 12 Days of Christmas companion app for its upcoming promotion in the UK and other parts of Europe, along with Canada. Verizon Wireless outage knocks out 4G LTE for some, 3G still 'works'

Odd lawsuit tries to claim earler work in Nike, iPod dispute
An unusual lawsuit filed earlier this week hoped to upturn another lawsuit over Nike+iPod technology. Maryland resident Erik Cherdak claimed to have had two patents relating to an "athletic shoe with timing device" that predate the patents accessory maker PhatRat was using to sue, and later license out to, Apple and Nike. He hoped to have the two PhatRat patents invalidated on top of forcing Apple and Nike to pay licensing fees for iPhones, iPods, and shoes designed to use the Nike+ system, all under the threat of a possible ban.

Fuji Xerox is launching a Dropbox-esque cloud service that lets colleagues send, receive, share and print documents with colleagues to tie in with its new range of multifunction printers. The year-ago ultrathin 11.6-inch MacBook Air model, using a 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo chip, has turned up on Apple's refurbished section at $699, a new low price point for the model. AT&T insists it will keep trying T-Mobile merger
Despite strong opposition from US regulators, AT&T CFO John Stephens asserted that the carrier will keep trying with its proposed acquisition of T-Mobile. At the UBS media conference just held in New York City, he insisted that the carrier would "continue to move forward" in spite of the Department of Justice lawsuit and withdrawing the FCC application. To prepare for the closing of the $39 billion T-Mobile deal, AT&T revealed it plans to use $10 billion cash it has accumulated on its balance sheet.
