Western Digital's 3 TB MyBook Studio perfect for pre-Lion backups

Are you about to upgrade your Mac to OS X Lion? One recommendation from the TUAW staff is that you do a complete backup of your Snow Leopard installation before you start. With many Mac internal drives nearing the 1 to 2 TB range in size, how do you back up the drive and still have a hard disk that's big enough for Time Machine to use? Easy -- take a look at Western Digital's new 3 TB MyBook Studio (US$249.99 MSRP). I had a chance to put one of these drives through the paces here at the crowded TUAW lab (which also doubles as the TUAW TV Live studio) and found it to be an attractive, quiet, and relatively fast high-capacity disk drive. Design As with many of Western Digital's recent m

Fujitsu to launch first Windows Phone Mango handset in... August?

Say it ain't so -- not only is a phone not delayed, it's actually planning to come out earlier than its quoted launch window? This particular miracle is the exception much more than the rule, but Microsoft's latest Windows Phone OS (nicknamed "Mango,") might come out prior to the anticipated fall release. According to Nikkei, Fujitsu will offer the very first Mango device, a waterproof phone called the IS12T, on KDDI "as early as late next month." The phone is to be sold for 30,000 - 40,000 yen (

Shaw Cable's Netflix competitor bypasses bandwidth caps on its way to the TV

While US residents seethe over increases in Netflix's pricing, our neighbors in Canada are upset by the competing Movie Club package Shaw Cable is offering. The $12 per month service offers unlimited access to "hundreds of the best Hollywood moves" and plans to have high definition feeds later this summer for an additional $5 (cable companies in the US have a similar scheme under the name Vutopia.) Causing the issue are promises that "the only limit is the number of hours in your day" unlike

Schon häufiger gab es in der Vergangenheit Fälle, in denen Apple explizit verschmutzte Macs von der Inanspruchnahme kostenloser Garantieleistungen ausschloss. Trainz Simulator for iPad on sale for a buck this weekend

Here's a solid deal for a little weekend R&R -- the famous Trainz Simulator on the iPad, which we've written about before, has dropped down to the low price of just 99 cents in the App Store for this weekend only. If you're interested in model trains at all, this is a really amazing app, featuring not only the ability to run virtual trains around any number of environments, but even modify and create your own trainsets right there on the iPad's touchscreen. It's not quite as in-depth as the desktop version of the software, but these Trainz guys take this stuff really seriously, so there are a lot (a lot!)

Orange UK offers daily 30MB for £3 roaming option for fee weary travelers

Oh Orange UK customers, you lucky dogs, your carrier is giving you a bit of a break as we enter globe-trotting season. No longer are you chained to absurd per-MB roaming charges or unecessary monthly plans. Instead, you can shell out £3-a-day (about $5) for 30MB of data -- which is plenty for checking e-mail and doing some light browsing. If you don't use any data then you don't get charged (sweet!), but go over that limit and you're back to the normal £3.07-per-MB rate (not so sweet). It's a perfect option for the traveler who only spends a week or two abroad at a time, and it closes the gap with fellow UK provider Vodafone, which offers a &p

Light bulb efficiency passes through US House, incandescent bulbs flicker in celebration

Not like Congress has anything more pressing on its plate right now, but the suits on Capitol Hill have somehow found time to poke their noses in yet another minute aspect of our personal lives -- lighting. All jesting aside, it was starting to look like those old, power-hungry incandescent bulbs wouldn't have a second chance at life. If you'll recall, a bill was passed way back in 2007 to kill 'em off by 2012, but Republicans were attempting to reverse things in order to give Americans a bargain option in the years ahead. De

Apple showed signs it was nearly matching supply with demand Saturday as iPad 2 ship times on the Apple Store shrank to one to three days. Deliveries haven't fully caught up but, at the current pace, could ship within 24 hours like other Apple products as soon as the end of next week.

Team members are advising most to cling to 4.3.3 or 4.2.9 if they want to use JailbreakMe or other wireless cracks.

No Comment: Washington State borrows Bodega's icon, with a tweak

Eagle-eyed reader Jeff spotted this icon in use over on the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries website, and it looked a little familiar to him, as a user of a certain unofficial Mac App Store app that has been around even before Apple's software distribution solution. Minus the actual name, it does look kind of familiar, no? Jeff emailed the Bodega app folks, who told him that nope, "They absolutely do not have the rights to that icon," and that he was "free to start publicly shaming them." Hey, you didn't hear it from us! Come to think of it, though, that Calculator at the bottom of the page also looks a little familiar. Maybe someone over in WA is j

The technology we now use on the desktop will soon just be found right in handheld computers, according to Murray. "People will choose the mobile because it's convenient, portable, and it's personal." That puts Firemint, developer of mobile apps and innovation around mobile interfaces, in a good place, of course.

Scientists find less damaging defibrillation method, heart tissue relieved

Good news, aging Earthlings: a team of researchers have found a way to shock a coding patient's heart, while leaving other organs and tissues undamaged from the defibrillator. The device send a single high voltage pulse of electrical energy to a patient's chest in order to fix an irregular or nonexistent heart beat; traditionally, what often results is damage to point of contact and surrounding skin cells, muscles and tissues, but a team of whiz kids have seemingly figured out a way to dodge the dreadfulness. Led by scientists Stefan Luther and Flavio Fenton, the team claims that by using a series of five pulses of less potent shocks (instead of a single concentrated charge), docs can see an 84 percent reduction in damaging power.
