European newspaper publishers unhappy with Apple's publication requirements

A few European publishers have heard from Apple about subscription arrangements on the App Store, and they're not happy at all. The agreement isn't that surprising -- just as with the current setup in iTunes for software developers, Apple is asking that all subscriptions go through them, and that they take their usual 30% cut. But that has European publishers quite angry -- not only is the price higher than they want to pay, but they say it's because Apple will cut them out of access to things like subscriber demographics and other inside information that they'd have if they ran subscriptions themselves. Apple, HTC, Samsung win in smartphone share, Nokia tumbles

New market share data from IDC has cemented the view that Android and the iPhone have been rapidly draining the share of Nokia and RIM. Android phone makers HTC and Samsung doubled and tripled their fall market share respectively in the past year to get 8.5 percent and 9.6 percent of the market. New MacBook Pros may be on the way for March

9 to 5 Mac is reporting increasing signs that new MacBook Pros are on the way. This latest evidence is from Best Buy "dummy SKU's" in its inventory system. If correct, the new laptops will come in at $1199 with a March 11 availability date. Those Best Buy dates aren't always accurate but it looks like something might be coming. Google may be planning to keep Android 2 and 3 segregated in a long-term split of the platform, according to a ViewSonic source on Monday. AAPL hits another all time high

Once again, Apple stock (AAPL) has hit a new intra-day high and this time it's a really good one. This is the first time Apple has broken into the lofty US $350's. X-47B unmanned stealth bomber completes its first flight (video)

The evil geniuses at Northrop Grumman successfully completed the first flight of its X-47B unmanned stealth bomber a few days ago at Edwards Air Force Base in Edwards, California. In the air for a full twenty-nine minutes, the tailless, fighter-sized UAV flew to 5,000 feet and completed several racetrack-type patterns, before landing safely at 2:38 pm PST. The aircraft will continue to undergo tests at Edwards AFB before heading to Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland, later this year. Verizon iPhone sales broke 500,000

Analysts estimate that Verizon sold over 500,000 iPhones in its first day of pre-order sales. Pre-ordering began at 3 a.m. ET and continued until 8:10 p.m. when the allotment set aside for pre-orders was depleted. Verizon confirmed in a press release that it broke its all-time first day sales record in the first two hours of ordering, a record that even beats the high-profile, heavily advertised launch of the Motorola DROID. Last.fm radio now pay-only on Android/iOS, free on Microsoft

Last.fm on Monday said it was switching to a pay-only model for its Internet radio on Android and iPhone devices on February 15. The strategy will drop the free, ad-supported service and will instead require $3 per month in the US to get the stream on a mobile device, albeit ad-free. Media hubs such as the Logitech Squeezebox and Sonos ZonePlayer line, will also need a subscription, either immediately or by mid-summer.

Needham, Susquehanna raise Apple price targets

Some analysts are today raising their price targets for Apple stock. Susquehanna's Jeff Fidacaro has upgraded from $445 to $465, while Needham's Charlie Wolf has pushed his ceiling from $375 to $450. Fidacaro cites increased shipping expectations, including 19.8 million iPhones in the March quarter (Apple's Q2), up from a previous estimate of 17.7 million. FY2011 as a whole is now expected to see 76.7 million iPhones instead of 70.5 million.

Telus to offer iPhone unlocking in Canada

Telus introduced a new unlock policy that will let customers unlock a GSM-based handset for a nominal fee of $50. This new unlock policy goes into effect on February 15th and is available for any GSM mobile phone that has been on the carrier's network for a minimum of 90 days. O2 UK says it's getting the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play (update: Vodafone, too)

Now that the Xperia Play is finally official ahead of a full unveiling at MWC next week, carriers are ready to hop on the bandwagon -- or at least one is: O2 in the UK. 9 to 5 Mac has linked to video of someone who managed to finagle his package out of the local UPS distribution center and get ahold of his Verizon iPhone on Saturday. White iPhone 4 starts to get Best Buy shelf space

This shelf tag was apparently spotted this weekend at a Best Buy in Houston, and it speaks for itself: white iPhone 4, AT&T, $599.99 off contract (the same price as the black). Best Buy ad confirms Xoom's $800 price, February 24 date

Worries that the Motorola Xoom might cost $800 may have been validated with the spotting of a Best Buy flyer. Its promo device shows the Android 3.0 tablet at the suspected price and shipping on the suspected February 24. Sony Ericsson's Facebook fan page on Sunday formally acknowledged the existence of the Xperia Play. Challenging Apple with the claim that "Android is ready to play," the update confirms the PlayStation phone will be detailed at Sony Ericsson's Mobile World Congress event on February 13 at 6PM Barcelona time (noon Eastern). I've been reading the News Corp. iPad newspaper The Daily since it came out last week. While my first impressions led to a positive review, the more I use it the less I like it. First, it is VERY slow to load if it loads at all (an impression shared by others). Recently I'm getting a lot of black screens and am dumped back to the iPad app screen. When it works, the slow load, which is often more than 30 seconds over WiFi, is just too long. The app should at least display a table of contents or top news stories while it downloads so you don't wind up staring into space. The news content does not
